“The Best For Golf”
Reviewed 13 June 2010

We have stayed at many golfing hotels, but Penina is still our favourite. The hotel is situated right on the course which as normal was in excellent condition.

In recent years the bedrooms have been modernised which was badly needed. As it is an older hotel the rooms are not overly large, but then we spend little time in them as we are out playing golf.

The hotel seem to have realised that the portion for the lunches were too large as many people shared. They have now brought in smaller portions, but these are more than half the cost of a full portion.

We were more impressed by the Italian restaurant which only opens during the summer than the offerings at the Grill. Avoid the Sagres restaurant and the buffets as these are nothing special. Breakfast is good with a wide selection.

We normally eat in Alvor which is about 8 euros in a taxi and has a wide selection of good value restuarants. Try to be in the bar on a Sunday when Elvis performs and Penina rocks and rolls.

The best thing about Penina is the golf. What would improve it further would be the addition of an indoor swimming pool for use in the winter.

we returned again this year and this place never disappoints. You only have to look around & listen to others who are regular visitors - we all seem to love the consistency of service & standards. The championship course was in excellent condition and was never too busy, so no long waits on the tee for those ahead to clear.
The breakfast is excellent plenty of choice and efficient service. The Grill is very good for evening meals and well priced for the quality. The lunches at Henry Cotton bar are very good although with a couple of drinks the bill can soon look high for what was a quick sandwich lunch.....but never mind, we're on holiday!
We will continue to take a trip here for hopefully many years to come.

Whilst we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Penina we thought the extra charges for snooker, tennis, internet coverage, 10 euros for a sauna etc. slightly over the top. We couldn't fault the pool area and the breakfasts were fantastic.

We have just returned from a 4 day golf break.Fantastic value for the stay and the golf but
the Bar was very expensive Buggies 45 euro but the trollies only 6 euro. The staff were always friendly and we found them in the main helpful. The golf courses were well kept and a good challange.Best advice would be stay BB and play the golf but eat and drink out . We did eat in the Main grill restaurant one night, the food was ok but over priced for the quality ditto with the wine . This was our 8th golf trip and one of our best, just wish the
prices were a little more in keeping with the stay costing.

The rooms were small but very nice - I was glad to be single in mine though, the wardrobe was just big enough for one golfer's supply for one week.
Room service was perfect, same with the bar where especially one young lady in charge (also serving in The Grill restaurant) was absolutely great.

Not so some of her fellow colleagues in the Sabres breakfast room and buffet evening restaurant. Any kind of criticism (can you please point the knifes away from my face?) was met with unkind remarks and neglect of the "difficult person" for the next 30 minutes.

The Championship course was in pretty good condition, we played it 4 times - but beware of the absolutely unacceptably rude ranger with dark hair, very dark sunglasses (on overcast days...) and his favourite "faster, faster" commands.
He absoluely detested one of our pros, was really impolite and barked his commands at us. One lady in our group was hurt badly trying to oblige - and offered to sue him if he didn't stop - which somehow made a change, he even helped us afterwards...
Anyway, such behaviour should not be tolerated by the management.

It's just like coming home. Penina continues to deliver unbelievable service from the moment Mena and Vitor welcome you at reception, to a friendly nod and smile from duty manager Carols Santana, to Augusta and Jamila in Henry Cotton's bar, from Fernando and Sonia at Breakfast to Jorge and Maria in the Golf shop, the list goes on - they are all fantastic. These loyal staff have been at Penina for years. I arranged a boys golf trip for 8 of us, many who had never been to Penina before and they were all delighted. Delighted with the Hotel and delighted with the Golf course. We were so lucky with the weather and the greens were fantastic. Thank you all so much. The Penina winter golfing packages are tremendous value for money, you take a chance with the weather in February but then ce la vie.

This hotel is not for the ordinary man the prices of everything in the place is a total rip off.
We went in a group of 32 to play golf, the championship course is in good condition but is a hard walk. you can get a buggy if you want to pay £48 , take plenty of balls as well £29 for three. The bar trolly comes round the course take a tip ,give it a miss £3 for a mars bar. If you want lunch a club sandwich and a pint it will cost you £18.
The hotel itself is spotlesly clean and the staff are very helpful, the rooms are small but very comfortable, the pillows are to die for.
Downstairs there is a full size snooker table, and a spa room.
Check in is a painless process, unlike some hotels, two of our group wanted to change there room for one with a balcony this was done with no fuss.
If you want a good day with good food and drink get a taxi £10 (4 people) into ALVOR a great place to eat is in the harbour, it is cheap but very good quality £12 for 2 beers, lamb chops(7) chips, salad, and bread and butter.
If you go to the main town stay clear of the strip bar as 4 of our group were fleeced for there money approx £5000 in total, also be aware of pickpockets in bars they bump into you to feel where your wallet is, the next time it will be gone.
Leave wallets and credit cards in your hotel safe and take cash in front pockets.
I hope this review helps you to enjoy your trip and be safe.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback and taking the time to post your comments. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the good condition of our Championship course, as well as the comfort of our rooms and kindness of our staff, during your stay at our resort.
I reviewed your comments regarding your stay with us at Le Méridien Penina Golf & Resort. We do take all comments seriously and appreciate all the feedback we can get. I just wanted to inform you the rates mentioned in your review are not totally correct and therefore can be misleading. The correct prices are 48 Euros for buggy rental, 22 Euros for 3 new balls of a renowned brand, 2 Euros for the mentioned chocolate bar and 18 Euros for a club sandwich and a pint. Please note that these prices are set accordingly to the high standards of our service and considering that we are a five star resort located in a tourist destination.
Again, thank you for the comments, which will help us in our ongoing efforts to improve our service. If you would like to discuss your experience with a member of the hotel staff, please send an email to sales.lemeridien@lemeridien.com, so we may address it with you directly.

Sincerely, Hotel Management
