We have just come back from Martinhal - we stayed in the hotel - and one of the best weeks we can remember. We read many of the reviews as well as information from various agencies and people who have visited the resort before we went. The week at Martinhal still exceeded our expectations. And wait for it.... it was just us. A couple! No children. The first week abroad on our own since our honeymoon.

Martinhal makes it clear that it is a luxury resort for families - it even carries it in all its advertising. Yes, there are children in the restaurants and by the pool and in all places in between. It is perfect for families. But it was perfect for us too. There are plenty of quiet spaces if you want them. For us the buzz of young families in fact enhanced the atmosphere. We could move easily and quietly amongst any busyness whenever we wanted to.

And the hotel, its location, the area around, is stunning. The water cold but crystal clear. The sun hot but often with a lovely breeze. And it's quiet in the evenings and the tennis court was never too busy. We liked each of the resort restaurants for different reasons. Have lunch at As Dunas. Go dolphin watching. Take a surf lesson. Hire a car. Find the beaches at Cordoama and especially Amado. Try the grilled Sea Bream!

Maybe the service is a little naive at times. Maybe finding the best spot by the pool wasn't exactly easy. Maybe the water in the minibar is too expensive. But that's the level of our displeasure!

We were very sad to leave and can't recommend Martinhal highly enough.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra for the Full View Ocean Rooms - it feels as though the sea is at your fingertips!

I am late posting this review of Martinhal, which we visited in Feb 2011 and 2012. Each time we have stayed in an Ocean View house and this year we also went half board due to a great deal. The houses are luxurious and perfectly equipped. They are also perfectly positioned with great sea views from the balcony. The staff are very helpful, friendly and seem to enjoy their jobs- I was surprised when they remembered my kids from the year before!
The breakfasts are wonderful, and the meals at el terraco in particular (with kids!) were thrilling for 2 grown ups who rarely get the chance for fine dining now.
We have been lucky with the weather and enjoyed using all the great facilities -pool, tennis, spa at a leisurely pace. Our children went to the rapinosas club one day and enjoyed it.
After a hard winter of Scottish weather, work, and vitamin D deficiency, Martinhal is a massive tonic and we really enjoy the off season calm of the resort. At that time the village square restaurant is usually shut and the pools very quiet. There haven't been too many families around at that time, but that suits us.
We would certainly recommend a visit off season if you're looking for peace and luxury. Hope to be back next year...

Room Tip: ocean view houses have the best views and are closest to the hotel

Thank you for sharing your lovely family experiences at Martinhal. We are very happy to know how much you enjoyed your winter breaks with us.
We will be open for the whole winter this year and there will be daily activities like Tennis, Padel, Pilates, Yoga, Biking and Hiking to choose from. The winter holds many sunny days and is always warmer than in the UK so it is a wonderful time to visit the Algarve, especially for winter wellness and, as you point out, the Algarve provides you with a natural shot of Vitamin D during the winter months!
We will also be running some Mummy Wellness programmes, so please do keep in touch!
We all look forward to your return.

This resort is great for young families. My 3 children, all under the age of 4, loved this place. the heated indoor/outdoor pool, the bikes, the big play area in the village square, the playground with the helicopter, the trampolines and the kids club were thoroughly enjoyed by them. Happy children = happy parents.
Whilst at kids club we managed to catch a bite at As Dunas which was very nice and not as hideously priced as others as mentioned. Sipping rose and enjoying the views was heavenly.
We stayed in a 3 bed garden house which was ample, lovely good sized bedrooms, the place was spotless, the kitchen was well equipped kitchen with nice Neff appliances and we had a fantastic pretty secluded, large garden for the children to run around in.
Yes as many have mentioned there were a lot of children, mainly of pre school age when I visited in June and although seemed very well behaved, I wouldn't come here without children. Would have liked to have had at least one child free swimming pool so that when my children were at the kids club I could have gone for a child free swim and not see or hear other people's children! Naughty I know but.....
All in all a fantastic and stress free family holiday and am seriously considering returning next year, maybe try one of the Pinewoods Houses.

Room Tip: 3 bed Garden House no 315 had one of the bigger gardens and wasn't overlooked by any of the othe...

Advice: Hire a car!
This location can be VERY windy in July and August, so windy you
can't lie on the beach, so be prepared for that. Windy days are best
used for sightseeing, or buying groceries at the nearby supermarket in town.
The resort also organises many things to do on windy days, and they have
indoor and outdoor heated swimming pools to keep the kids amused.

When the wind dies down you are rewarded with a beautiful sandy beach that is never
packed. The sea is calm and blue, and Freezing cold! Like the sea in the UK.
The sea is clear and clean. You can hire boats, windsurfers etc, there is no need to
book in advance. The beach has a restaurant, called 'martinhal restaurante', which
sells snacks and portuguese (mostly fish) main courses. The prices are 50% of the hotel
restaurants. Kids menu on the beach is 4.50euro, 8.50euro in the hotel restaraunt.

The hotel restaurants are not for anyone on a budget, they are expensive, more
like London prices. The food and presentation is very good.
They are uniquely child friendly, with play areas in front of the.
As Dunas was very good. The restaurants are always fully booked.
Cheaper restaurants in town or on the beach

There is a take away on site, featuring pizzas at £12 each.

The resort features a wide range of family friendly multi-room accommodation, which
is quite unusual. (They also offer kids clubs and baby sitting).

The 'luxury villas' are not luxurious in my opinion, they lack marble bathrooms
and the owners touches, and more bedrooms - others might disagree about this.
What you do get is a nice clean villa, full of durable fixtures that are nice to
look at and your kids are less likely to destroy, and, everything works.
If it doesn't a quick phone call to reception and someone comes and fixes it.
A cleaning team arrives everyday, though they don't clean parts of the kitchen,
you have to wash up yourself- their web site doesn't mention this.
The Villas outdoor pool was heated, varying from 28 to 30 degrees.
They make the process of hiring a villa very easy, no damage deposit
or pool heating supplement. The cost of the Villa was about 650euro per day,
peak season. They had a range of smaller and cheaper mini villas etc.

The villa gardens were very well kept.

There are also tennis courts and tuition you can hire out for a 'small fee'.

Do venture into the local small town and try their beaches and restaurants.

This is an ideal family holiday resort, and the wind keeps the temperature down.
And the staff were very good. (Bit pricey )

On arrival this modern, sprawling resort has the "wow" factor. The most appealing feature was our huge, upmarket villa with grassy courtyard - this is five star accommodation. The nearby beach, although windy, is also attractive and has a couple of restuarants and an additional pool. Service from the staff was exceptional. Unfortunately, the families with young kids tend to dominate the pool and restuarant areas. The Martinhal restuarants are somewhat pricey but you can eat in nearby Sagres (or get take-away) for about half the cost.

The location is lovely along with the surroundings and is very rustic, although be prepared for the wind which some days can be very strong and make getting out of the pool a little chilly until you are dry. You can’t fault the facilities having stayed in one of the villas with a pool, and the staff are very friendly and courteous. However, on our visit there we had more than a couple of occasions where they were apparently busy, and the service was poor in terms of getting our drinks and food orders in, and we waited nearly an hour on one occasion, sitting without even a drink with two very tired children hitting the wall, with an apology of “sorry for anything, we are very busy today”, but from an outsiders point of view, I have been to a lot more busier restaurants, it just needs some training and management to concentrate on specific areas or tables, rather than you getting service from up to five or six staff, but I imagine as it is a new place these are just some of the teething problems. All our two wanted was to be in the square because of the play area, unfortunately it needs a nicer restaurant choice there along with the one that is there at present, as you are stuck with a Zizzi type place to eat, with no choice of anything nicer which forces you out and about once you have eaten at the seafood restaurant enough times, and worked your way through the menu. You will definitely need a car to get about if that is what you want, although the taxis are very cheap with a trip into town costing 6 euros. And for you ladies, make sure you take something warm to sit out in during the evening.

Room Tip: We stayed as a family of four in a pinewoods two bed villa with pool, which was perfect for our stay...

It is our goal to exceed expectations and we appreciate you letting us know we did in so many ways.
On your note regarding the wind, please note that it does have its benefits like keeping the daytime temperatures down to a bearable level for families, however July and August are the windiest months.
It would be great a pleasure to welcome you and your family again, we ensure you that at Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel no efforts are spared towards our continuous progress.

First the good things: Large and luxurious modern rooms with wonderful views, right next to Martinhal beach. The mainly young staff are outstanding, friendly and attentive.

But it is overpriced, particularly the bars and restaurants. You can eat and drink for half the price with twice the quality in nearby Sagres... and when they say family friendly they mean family friendly! Kids are everywhere, great if you have kids of your own, but not so good if you want some peace and quiet to relax and enjoy the pleasantly landscaped surroundings.
