Nice enough. 5 star - lovely resort.

Few refinements needed around edges - cleanliness of pools (attentiveness to keeping in order during day), attentiveness of restaurant staff (friendly but probably understaffed so don't pour drinks/ clear away quickly enough). Better communication of activities and restaurants/ things to do needed. Could do with providing restaurant menus for example in the apartments. Ants in apartment which should have been noted. Kids club was full the whole time so only got to get our children in for a couple of sessions. Not a disaster as we do want to spend time with the kids but they are used to pre-school and actually wanted to go there. If it is something that gets very full then the resort should make this clear up front so that people book.

Few little touches missing. They could improve things by putting 3 or 4 toys in the apartments seeing as the resort is so heavily marketed to families.

Meals exceptionally expensive for pretty standard food and we couldn't help feeling ripped off on this front.

We had seen reviews about the shop being expensive but we didn't think that was too bad. Decent quality and diversity of products so no complaint there.

We personally felt that the heavy marketing to families has been overdone. We had 3 young kids ourselves and everything was geared up for them but we just felt slightly suffocated by wall-to-wall families and it would have been nice to see more diversity. We've stayed in other 5* family friendly resorts in the US with little children and have enjoyed seeing all age ranges and travellers.

On the whole the place was lovely but lacked the wow factor, mainly due to attention to the details which is a shame because it wouldn't take much to bring it to the next level. We personally wouldn't be in a huge rush to return but that is more down to personal taste than anything else. The kids did love it though and the accommodation and its furnishings were stunning so all in all a mixed review.

It gives us great pleasure to know how much you enjoyed your stay with us.

On your note on our swimming pools we would like to inform you that all 5 pools are cleaned by our Leisure Team on a daily basis and chlorine levels are checked 3 times a day.

In relation to your comments on the lack of information regarding things to do please accept our
apologies. Nevertheless, we would like to point out that in your welcome documentation you could find all information all our Leisure Activities / Programs / Academies / Kids Clubs.
Also in your welcome letter and in our daily distributed news paper (called The Martinhal Times), we also inform our clients of our new Smartphone application which provides all our clients with up-to-date information on the essentials of what is going on at and around Martinhal.
This “mobile website” application can be accessed from any Smartphone, laptop (or desktop) or Tablet by any of our clients. If you wish to try it now, please go to: www.mymartinhal.com and click on the little arrow in the corner to download the icon onto your Smartphone if you have one to have a look (otherwise, it is just as easily accessed from your computer).

Kindly note that our Front Office and Guest Services Team are always very glad to answer any questions on all the activities available on-site as well as providing our clients all necessary information to explore this magnificent part of the western Algarve’s coast (i.e. maps, recommended activities, boat/ bicycle/ jeep/ photograph/ walking tours, surf trips, recommendation on the best places to visit, parks, etc).

Further to your comments regarding the ants, as Martinhal is surrounded by a Natural Park we are prone to these type of unwanted visits by insects. Given our environmental restrictions and safety concerns of our youngest clients, we are limited in the choice of products that we can apply to control it, nevertheless we will continue to do our outmost to prevent these situations from occurring again.

We regret that you did not receive sufficient information prior to your arrival regarding the need to pre-book our children’s clubs and activities to ensure availability on the dates and times of your preference. Therefore, we apologize for any inconvenience. On your next booking, please kindly inform us in advance of your family needs and expectations.
We will gladly recommend you the most adequate solutions and ensure that your expectations are meet.

Regarding your comment on toys we often have clients asking for a few toys for this children to play with at home and out children’s club are only too happy to help out with this.

We regret to know that not all your expectations towards the variety and quality of food in our restaurants were meet. Nevertheless, we wish to inform that according to our Guest Surveys, the satisfaction levels of our Restaurant’s food quality and variety has increased considerably over the last month (as a result of considerable changes made in our Menus together with the introduction of “daily specials”).

Further to your remark on the age groups of children during the period of your stay, kindly note that this reality varies considerably from week to week.
As an example, kindly note that between the 2nd week of July up until the 3rd week of August as well as half-term periods we have a higher number of children with more than 5 years. Outside these periods, we tend to have more clients with babies and toddlers (children up to 5 years of age).

At Martinhal we are continuously looking at ways to improve, therefore all your comments are highly valued.

We sincerely hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you and your family again soon to experience our continuous positive progress.

This was the easiest family holiday we've taken (5 year old and 9 month old). The resort was well designed with lots of useful child friendly additions; a minder and activity table in each restaurant, a play area next to the popular evening restaurants. The accommodation was lovely and well laid out, plenty of space and every utensil we needed. The food was great but the service questionable at times. We'd certainly return though. The pools and activities were great and the kids clubs a great success. This isn't one of those resorts where it's all in your face, the amenities and activities are there if you want them and if you didn't, you'd never notice that they were going on. I think it would be easy to return each year and the kids would always be occupied with the next level of activity.

We stayed in one of the Beach House rooms with full sea view - wow! This hotel is stunning in design and extremely comfortable with superb views. We enjoyed spending time on our balcony just enjoying the views with a book and bubbly in hand (we found a bottle in our room upon arrival), while our 2 year old had his afternoon nap. Utter bliss!!

I can't really fault this hotel - the staff were fantastic (especially the staff at the pool bar), Martinhal beach is gorgeous, the hotel pool and it's facilities were great. The play areas for kids at the corner of the restaurants make it ideal for the little ones and for us when we wanted to enjoy a meal but our son had had enough.

As others have commented the only slight negative was that food was eye wateringly expensive here and we felt the quality didn't always match the price. We never paid less than €50/60 for lunch and €100 for dinner. We had one fantastic dinner at O Dunas (lovely fresh, tasty fish) but the rest was pretty average. We left with a hefty bill covering our meals here over 3 days so just keep this in mind when booking.

We were lucky with the weather so we had a fantastic time but it could have been boring otherwise. Having said this, there is an indoor pool and some organised activities. The crèches also seem fantastic although we didn't use them.

This for us was a perfect resort to relax in for a few days. We probably wouldn't have spent a week here as there isn't enough to do in our opinion but it was perfect for 3/4 days. It can also get a little intense as it is so family friendly and full of kids everywhere...particularly at breakfast we found! Of course the point here is that it attracts families with children and the hotel certainly caters very well for them.

One other very minor thing we perhaps missed were some goods for kids in the rooms - like for example a robe, shampoo, bath toy, drawing kit etc. I probably wouldn't have felt the need to comment about this were it not for the fact that we had just been to 4 star hotel in the UK that provided slippers, robe, shampoos and a bath toy for our 2 year old. We thought it was a really nice touch and given this is a 5 star and a resort for families we were expecting a similar thing I suppose. This is only a little thing but could be a nice touch and recommendation for the hotel.

We would certainly recommend to others and return here!

That’s what holidays are meant to be – relaxing… We are thrilled you and your family had a fantastic stay. Many thanks for your kind compliments!

Further to your suggestions regarding children’s robe, shampoo, bath toy and drawing kit we will put these forward to the Management of our Housekeeping Team who are also responsible for our Baby Concierge List (i.e. bottle sterilizers, bottle warmers, individual baby buggies, baby bouncing chairs, toilet bases, etc).

On you note regarding our Restaurant prices, we wish to inform that unfortunately taxes on food and beverage in Portugal are very high: 23%. This does make food prices very high in comparison to some other countries in Europe.

In addition, we aim to offer a higher level of service and facilities (like kids supervision and exclusive kids corners in the restaurants and bar, the trampoline and sandpit, a high number of baby chairs, kids’ entertainment, more extensive kids’ and baby menus, etc) which renders the experience in our Restaurants different as well: all fine-tuned for families!

We are sorry to hear that you found there was not a lot to do at Martinhal.

Many thanks for kindly recommending us to your friends – we are sure they will be thanking you too!

We all look forward to welcome you and your family again soon for another fantastic holiday!

We went on to another hotel in Portugal after 4 nights in Martinhal. We wish we had stayed put. Martinhal exposes all the detailing & things that other hotels could do if the really knew their customer - like kids tables, games & helpers at discrete end of restaurant, champagne left in room, bags & beach towels provided. Design led furniture & architecture, providing light & colour from every spot, even when covered in dark cloud. They seemed to have designed hotel simultaneously through parents'and the kids eyes alike. Like the fun surf bar. The only thing Martinhal falls short on can be weather - high wind, and attracting too many similar young families. We'll always want to go back there.

We have just returned from a 5 night stay at Martinhal and had a great time. My partner and I travelled with our 10 month old baby and had a very enjoyable experience. The resort staff were unfailingly polite and helpful, nothing was too much trouble for them. We found the facilities were on the whole very good and a lot of thought went into little touches such as allowing guests to check their invoices on a daily basis via an online receipt function. The swimming pools were good with great poolside service from the bar and the resort’s proximity to the Martinhal beach is ideal.

However we felt there was a bit of room for improvement:-
- The restaurants are very expensive although the quality of the food is generally good particularly the Italian. The one near the swimming pool – I think it is called ‘Os Dumas’ - is just ok. After paying a small fortune for a meal for 2 on the resort we opted to eat lunch in Sagres where we found some great little restaurants and paid a fraction of the price. We took the shuttle which left from the front of reception every morning and our drivers were very friendly and helpful in giving advice about places to go. Bear in mind Sagres is VERY small and there is not a great deal to do so if you are after an exciting day out with lots of diversions for your kids you might be disappointed. There are a handful of bars and restaurants and not much else. Our driver told us a few childless guests (who had obviously not read up on the area before arrival) left the resort after a few days as there was not enough to do. On a general point, the beaches in Sagres are tricky to access with a buggy and do not offer any sheltered areas (they are popular with surfers rather than families) so take adequate provisions if you want to keep your children in the shade.

- Avoid the on-site supermarket at all costs unless it is a dire emergency! We spent 25 euros on 4 items in there. We then did a much bigger shop at the supermarket in Sagres and spent 21 euros on several bags of groceries.

- Despite being a child friendly resort, the pathways at Martinhal are not very buggy friendly at all. The cobbled paths are not great when you are carting around a small child. They really should introduce more ramps to help people getting around. I saw a parent in a wheelchair and it occurred to me that it must also be very difficult for disabled guests to navigate the various paths.

- As parents of a 10 month old we would have appreciated a few more ‘baby friendly’ facilities such as a changing station in our apartment – we had to change our little one on our bed or on the floor. Also the flooring in the apartment (hard stone) is not ideal for a crawling child. It seemed to us that Martinhal is perhaps more geared towards walking toddlers rather than very small children. Perhaps they could provide accommodation specifically for parents with babies in their party. This may already exist but we were not aware of it if so. We provided our child's age when we made the booking and so would have hoped that we would be placed in appropriate accommodation (or advised that the one we had selected was not suitable).

All in all we would recommend Martinhal to parents looking for a child friendly place with first-rate facilities. However we would suggest parents of under 1’s or those with mobility issues might struggle with some aspects of this resort.

Room Tip: Check the location of the room and it's facilities if you are travelling with a baby or a child...

Thank you for your review and kind appreciation of our service.

We totally agree that the quality of service and friendliness of staff can be the “make or break” of our success therefore it is very reassuring and encouraging to all the Martinhal team to know we are on the right path.

On your note regarding our prices, kindly note that unfortunately, taxes on food and beverage in Portugal are very high (23%) which does make food prices very high in comparison to some other countries in Europe. In addition, we aim to offer a higher level of service and facilities (like the trampoline and sandpit, kids’ corners, a high number of baby chairs, kids’ entertainment, more extensive kids’ menus, etc) to render a different experience in our restaurants: all fine-tuned for families!
Furthermore, we also would like to inform that O Mercado is a convenience store and we don't have the purchasing power of supermarket chains as well as many of products on offer are Gourmet and from top quality brands - as per our clients preference (information obtained from our Client Survey results). Our clients in general appreciate the wonderful range of products we do have in Mercado for their convenience, including freshly-prepared takeaway food - we hope you had the opportunity to try it.

With regards to your suggestion of having a changing station, we have forwarded your comments to the Management of our Housekeeping Team who are responsible for our Baby Concierge. We do provide changing matts along with an extensive list (i.e. bottle sterilizers, bottle warmers, baby bouncing chairs, toilet bases, etc) for our younger guests.

Nevertheless we apologize for the inconveniences experienced which fall short of the superb hospitality we strive for and certainly has no resemblance with our usual standards.
We will look forward to welcoming you and your family again in the near future for another fantastic holiday.

We came here with our 2 year old in mid May2014 and no doubt about it this place is child and family friendly. It has all mod cons and our garden house was faultless ( and we're fussy). Staff are very friendly and can't do enough to help and accommodate and we get the impression they actually care. All pools and beach are fantastic, well kept and staffed and numerous playgrounds for the kids.
There are 3 restaurants on the resort and whilst they serve reasonable meals, they aren't always great and they are all way over priced, expect to pay in excess of 40 euros for a couple of sandwiches and a kids meal for lunch and more for dinner.
Also, a couple of days we were here the weather was very windy and rainly, wind was very strong meaning we were confined to the house. Whilst this wasn't the resorts fault, we felt that they could have offered more by means of alternatives to pool and beach, which they didn't seem to. The indoor pool was small and given the weather here is so hit and miss I think this is something they need to address, especially given that the resort is not walking distance to anywhere.
Definitely would recommend but it's pricey once you're here and you'll quickly run out I'd stuff to do.

When the weather is not so good at Martinhal our Leisure and Kids Club Teams put together a Rainy Day programme which consists of activities onsite for all the family to take part in eg. One week stay mid May. Stayed in garden house, communication with reservation staff upon arrival was poor and items requested for the room such as DVD player and children's bed not in room. We were informed only after checking in that an extra bed would cost €60 a day and a DVD player costs €10 per day. We also had ants in the room most days and had to request housekeeping come most days to spray room. Our accommodation was not large enough as booked on the internet, hardly enough wardrobe space for one person never mind 3. The restaurants, bars and service throughout our stay was excellent. The pools were great, however slide areas into the pool were quite dangerous and slippy, we had to request towels to be put down to prevent falls. Also some facilities were down steep hills and lots of steps, all cobbled grounds which might it quite difficult with buggies and falls with young children. Very expensive but all in all worth another visit. Kids facilities are top class.

Thank you for sharing your impressions on your recent stay with us.

At Martinhal we do take every aspect seriously and we also strongly believe that small details do make a difference to properly enjoy a wonderful family holiday.

We regret to know that not all your expectations towards your Garden View House were meet and we apologise for any inconveniences experienced.
Please note that at Martinhal we have different categories and types of accommodation and they all differ from each other. Therefore the equipment, decoration, layout and facilities also vary between them.

Our Reservations team has been made aware and we are now taking the necessary efforts to ensure that the relevant information is sent to all future bookings during the reservation process. On your next booking, please kindly inform your family needs and expectations to our Reservations team. They will gladly recommend you the best accommodation available for your family needs.

Further to your comments regarding the ants, as Martinhal is surrounded by a Natural Park we are prone to these type of unwanted visits by insects. Given our environmental restrictions and safety concerns of our youngest clients, we are limited in the choice of products that we can apply to control it, nevertheless we will continue to do our upmost to prevent these situations from occurring again.

Regarding your comments on our pathways, we would like to inform you that our Maintenance Team does keep a very close watch on the upkeep of our pathways. However, taking into account the huge grounds (of approx. 42 hectares) on which Martinhal Resort is situated, is not always perceptive to our clients where this type of maintenance work is being carried out.

We would like to assure you that we take our health and safety issues very seriously and regarding your comments about surface around the Indoor Pool we have passed this over to the Management of our Maintenance Team to address.

We sincerely hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you and your family back again to Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel in the near future, where you all may experience our continuous positive progress.
