“Excellent family holiday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 August 2014

We stayed here for 1 week last summer (2013).

We booked a 2 bedroom Pinewood House which came with its own private pool. The accommodation was expensive but extremely impressive and far preferable to a hotel room. Clean, modern, well appointed. Our room had an en-suite bathroom and so the children had the use of their own bathroom. The open plan kitchen and lounge were excellent and this gave us the option to have a night in when we didn't fancy going out for dinner (the italian does takeaway pizza and there are nice restaurants outside if you are up for a drive out). We had loungers and bean bags by our private pool and it provided a nice peaceful break from the main pool.

The hotel facilities were very good. The place is clean and well presented. There is a nice family pool with a snack bar. Easy access to the beach which also has a little snack bar (not connected to the hotel). Good restaurants in the hotel serving decent quality food. Seafood restaurant by the beach very good but quite expensive. We liked the fact that this isn't a package holiday/all inclusive style hotel. It has a cool independent vibe. It was stylish, chic and somewhere that we could enjoy as well as the kids.

Our children were aged 6 and 8 at the time and the hotel was perhaps lacking in entertainment/facilites for their age group. There seemed to be very good facilities for younger children and there was a games room for older children in the village but we felt they were caught somewhere in the middle. This meant they spent most of their time with us - not always a good thing!

The location is very very windy. I have never been anywhere quite like it before. We didn't find this to be much of a problem at the main pool which was sheltered from the wind. However, the beach was a bit too windy for us. That said, I think that the quality of the hotel far outweighs the problems with the wind.

Having been on an all inclusive holiday to the Sensatori Tenerife (Thomson) with the children this summer for much the same money (and having had a truly awful experience) I feel compelled to emphasise how great this place is!!

We would recommend this resort , it has beautiful views and surrounding areas, excellent service by very friendly staff willing to do all they can to please us. the resort is safe and very suitable for families. Our family , us two + 17,15,10 year old. The resort is primarily for younger families, However there were lots of activities, cycling , tennis , football , lovely warm heated outdoor pools and the fantastic beach , for the teens and adolescents to enjoy . The ocean was cold, not possible to swim. However lots of Kayaking and other activities such as snorkelling.

We would urge the management / owners to refurbish and expand the gym with professional equipment cardio and toning/weights machines with good airconditioning or windows that open.

Reception:

Mr Goncalo Norguina , senior reception staff , was extremely welcoming and resolved any issues immediately. He explained the way the resort works very clearly and had personally said that we can approach him if we had any problems. Indeed he kept checking with us if everything was OK and if needed any additional services.

Catering:

The restaurant Terraco was extremely good in the quality of service and food. I am pleased to say that because the service was so good the breakfast was one of our most enjoyable experiences. I would like to mention that the staff are extra helpful and friendly, Lillia , Anna , Patricia , Alexander , Franseco , Simon , Angela , Fatima , Claudia I , Claudia II .

I was impressed when on one evening I saw the director of catering helping out with clearing the tables, this shows dedication to his profession.

Accommodation:

The rooms were fabulous and clean and had an excellent ocean view. We made a suggestions that no-smoking should be allowed inside or on the balcony , but to designate smoking areas.

Complimentary Water bottles need to be available free in each room daily ( as although the tap water is drinkable most families prefer the bottled water ).
The extra bed was old and poorly maintained and some other parts of the rooms needed maintaining.

Gym:
This was a big issue. the cardio equipment were rusty and did not work, The air conditioner was poor, even if just a window can be open the wind will cool the gym. The gym need to expand as Sagres can be relatively colder and windier than the rest of the Algarve so outdoor activities may be limited. A larger gym will help guests stay fit and feel good to go out and brave / face the weather. Please Please Please rebuild and re-equip the gym.

Landmarks and the area:
This is a beautiful conservation natural park, the beaches are clean and very scenic. It was windy when we visited but in a way I think the wind and the cooler temperature ( 27 C ) kept it less spoilt.
I recommend that you visit the lighthouse in San. Vicente for the sunset , it is majestic.( plan in advance as you do get traffic congestion)
Also visit CapeDivers for snorkelling experience, very friendly service by Annabella and Daniel the instructor.

The general manager was always around and attending to any queries by the customers.

Room Tip: All hotel rooms have excellent ocean view.

Nevertheless our Senior Management was informed of your impressions. We ensure you that we are continuously looking at ways to improve our services and surpass our clients expectations.

Regarding your comments on smoking please be advised that all our accommodation has a non- smoking policy inside however as is the case with all our restaurants however should our clients wish to smoke while outside we can ask them not too but cannot prohibit this. Stayed for a week in an Ocean House in June. The plus points:

- the quality of the accommodation - great views, well appointed, everything worked. Good idea putting the living space at first floor and beds at ground floor;

- O Terraço - every Portuguese dish I tried was Michelin star, some were outstanding. Some of the non-local dishes were slightly disappointing by comparison but still were very good;

- the diverse choice of swimming pools. Keeps things interesting;

- the staff in the restaurants and the children's entertainers were all very friendly and my kids loved them;

- the VW Camper van in the M Bar. My kids (and many others) absolutely loved this;

- paddle boarding - great fun. Thanks goodness the instructor convinced me to wear a wet suit as I did fall off, many many times and the sea was freezing.

The downsides:

- As Dunas - the main fish dishes here were absolutely atrocious. Completely devoid of flavour and lacking in quality and quantum of fish. If you had paid the full al la carte price you would have a very good case for daylight robbery. Real shame as some of the starters (octopus) were promising;

- the lack of alternative restaurants - unfortunately Os Gambozinos was average, certainly I would have preferred to eat at Carluccios. Thus, this, coupled with the dire nature of the seafood restaurant, left us with only one decent choice of restaurant;

- the lack of imagination with the breakfasts - the breakfast wasn't bad but it was almost exactly the same food every day. At this sort of standard you expect something a little bit more diverse;

- the extras - £60 quid to hire a DVD player - definitely daylight robbery;

- difficulty of the staff in the main reception when we wanted to send our 22 month year old to the 2 - 5 year old kids club - a degree of discretion is required here, although to be fair the staff in the kids club were supportive;

- the scenery - picturesque this is not.

Other things to watch out for are the weather. We were very lucky that it was very hot most of our stay as the wind is fierce and chilling, hence the barrenness of the landscape.

All in we did have a good holiday but for the price we paid I felt ripped off due to the lack of quality restaurants and the shortcomings of the setting and the sea. Porto Sani Village is streets ahead in these respects although their accommodation is not as good.

Room Tip: If you go for an Ocean Villa try and get an unrestricted view.

It is our goal to exceed expectations and we appreciate you letting us know we did in so many ways. Thank you!

It is unfortunate, though, that there were areas that you were disappointed with and we are sorry for that.

Regarding your comments on the quality of food in our As Dunas restaurant, kindly note that they were presented to our F&B Management Team along with your comments on our breakfast buffet.We regret any inconveniences experienced during your stay.

We wish to inform you that after your stay it was decided that all rental of DVD Players is now Free of Charge. Please contact us on guestservicedesk@martinhal.com and we will be happy to reimburse you.

We are surprised to hear that you found our location not picturesque as we usually hear very different from the clients especially those who stay in our Ocean Houses which take full advantage of our panoramic sea views.

On your note regarding the barrenness of the landscape, we have tried to bring into the resort the same flora species found in the surrounding Natural Parkland.

We are sorry to hear that you found our choice of restaurants limited kindly not that our FO and Guest Service Teams are on hand to provide information on surrounding areas and also other restaurant options for our guests to try.

We all look forward to host you and your family again for a much improved holiday experience.

We have just returned from a ten days stay in Martinhal. It was our second time in the resort and we again had a fabulous vacation! We stayed in a Mimosa house and also with children who are 10 and 12 years old this is the perfect location. There is a lot of privacy, a lot of space and the children could go around by themselves throughout the resort. The area of Sagres is still(?) not so touristic and if you rent a car you can easily visit other parts of the Algarve. We enjoyed the sea, the surfing, the swimming pools, the coconut beach area, the restaurant near the beach.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the Mimosa house, with more space and privacy. The kitchen was very good, there was moder...

We have just returned from 2 fabulous weeks in Sagres. We windsurfed frequently at Martinhal beach using the equipment and tuition from Windsurf Point. Both Manuel and Janik were very helpful and we would recommend Windsurf Point if you are staying in Martinhal. Our kids particularly enjoyed the paddle boards and kayaks, while we windsurfed. Keep up the good work guys, we will be back next year.

We booked our holiday nearly a year in advance after lots of research so our expectations were high and mostly they were met or exceeded.

We stayed in a 2 bed, 2 story, Garden house which was recommended as the best property type with young children (ours are 2 & 6) as we back on to a large garden area (not private but very safe) to explore. The house is beautiful, the furniture is high quality and everything was spotless. The beds are so, so comfortable and the decor is modern and we loved everything about the house. House keeping come daily so you don't lose out staying in a house or villa here as you still get the floors cleaned, beds made, towels changed etc - daily, just like in the main hotel. Our living space downstairs is huge with a large balcony coming off the master bedroom and a terrace off main living room with table, chairs, sun beds. We were house number 303 and got the sun ALL day - perfect.

We were Half Board, which meant we had breakfast everyday in the main hotel and a choice of lunch or dinner in one of the 3 restaurants. No drinks included, only tea/coffee/juice etc at breakfast. The breakfast here is just so good, the service, the feeling of space, no queuing even in mid August! The views looking out onto the beach, simply breathtaking. But here is the golden nugget.....they have a play area for the children WITH a dedicated member of staff to play with the children. Wonderful. The service was excellent, always lots of waiting staff to help with any request.

The Beach is wide with soft sand and 2 beach side cafés (nothing to do with the hotel) whilst you can directly access it from the hotel, it is not a pushchair friendly walk (it does only take a few minutes) and like other people have mentioned if you wanted a sun bed and umbrella you would need to pay for this at the cafe on the beach. The beach is just so beautiful, the water is freezing but so clear and the sand is perfect for lots off sandcastle building. As you leave the hotel to take the walk down to the beach you will see a large box with buckets and spades etc to borrow.

The wind.....it's time to talk about the much reviewed and talked about wind.
It is so, so windy here that all of our lips are chapped, it is so windy we can't use the beach at times (often in the late afternoon) because the sand blows onto your legs and it hurts and makes my children cry. The wind is so strong you need a jumper until about 10am and definitely in the evening too. It is so windy we can't really use our terrace area in the evening unless we wrap a blanket round our shoulders.
My son who is 2 gets so cold as soon as his shoulders pop out of the water he can't really use the pools very often because the wind is just so strong. You can hear it whistling during the night. When the wind does drop (which is rare but does happen) you realise just how hot it is and therefore be really careful with sun cream as in these conditions it is so easy to get burnt. We got use to the wind after about a week but would much prefer it to be less windy. However, I do hear this exceptional wind is due to a super moon and not normal.............it's obviously a windy resort but not necessarily always THIS windy........

The supermarket on site is good, it stocks loads of Ella pouches, Formula milk as well as fresh breads, meats, wine, beer etc BUT it's not cheap...however the main supermarket is a 20 minute walk or about 8 euro in a cab or you can use the hotel shuttle......We got loads of shopping for about 60 euro for lunches and snacks etc.

The Square is the main hub of activity in the evenings, but don't expect full on kids entertainment etc....it's not like that here. Again another super play area and you can see the children from the
Italian restaurant. Also the surf bar is here and again another play area at the back which is aimed at under 4's. So you can quite easily have a Beer whilst your children play. A small beer is about 2.50 euro...cocktails are about 8-10 euros....no happy hours.....no daily specials......

The Kids clubs are excellent and I mean the best I have ever used. My son went to the 2-4yr old kids club and I was really nervous as he is only just 2 and doesn't communicate well. He was so well looked after, with lots of 1 to 1 due to his age. They have bouncy castles, cookie making, pirate and princess themes, go karts, smart trikes, cosy corner, story time, trucks, trains etc!

Some of the grounds need some TLC....but generally they are very well kept. All the staff are helpful and apart from the Bar at the beach pool everywhere is really well staffed. This bar needs to be bigger with more staff. You often waited ages for cocktail here but the staff are very friendly and helpful.

Nothing is too much trouble here at Martinhal.

We stayed at the Martinhal Resort with our two boys aged 16 & 14 for 11 nights with the intention of Surfing and for the boys to meet people at the Teenage club.

RESORT. Whatever Martinhal might say this property is geared up for under 9’s, there are a number of crèches/full time child care functions and 4 pool areas, all overrun with noisy toddlers, Great if you are at that stage with your kids, we’re not. The Blue room, supposedly for teenagers is also overrun with under 9’s. Even the gym, (adults only) has under 9’s on the running machine or bikes. There isn’t anywhere you can hide, small people are lurking in every shadow.

Wind surfers off Martinhal beach reach speeds of 40mph that’s because it’s windy in this part of Portugal, very windy, you can sit on the beach but only if you’ve chosen to swap the spa for the beach to get your exfoliation! The water is so cold you‘ll need a wet suit, great though because it’s also too cold for small people.

TEENAGE CLUB. There isn’t a “Youth leader’, someone who could round up the teens and lead activities such as volleyball, football, tennis or kayaking and as such teenagers are left to their own devices. It’s an easy fix and I spoke to Debbie Talhadas, Guest Services Manager who argued they do have people who are supposed to make this happen but conceded it wasn’t one persons responsibility to do so. You never know Martinhal might sort this and bring the property into line with other 5 star properties the world over.

Some activities listed as suitable for older teenagers require payment, bikes are €28 a day, trial scuba diving €100, 4x4 tours €55 each. small single sail cat (they’re not Hobies) €40/50 an hour + wetsuit hire. There are other free activities, such as a walking tour, pool games etc, you get the picture I’m sure.

SURFING. We came to this resort specifically to Surf, we didn’t use the Surf School recommended by the Hotel and opted for a local company called Wavesensations which turned out to be a perfect and cheaper choice. We had two English instructors who collected & dropped us off at the resort with impeccable timing. If you do come to Sagres to surf, you will soon find out there are a number of Surf schools in the area, most are totally mobbed but with Wavesensations the student/instructor ratio was only 3:1. They also took our boys snorkeling and paddle boarding after surfing had finished and at no extra cost – Inevitably we pushed on into the evenings and had a lot of fun with these guys.

SPA. We had a brilliant Ayurvedic treatment at the Spa by Elsa, quite possibly one of the best ever. However, one Mother brought her 4 year old in for a massage (why?) he of course decided to make as much noise as possible – as I say, no where to hide…

RESTAURANTS, We used the surf bar in the square, it’s a comfortable and relaxed area and if you get the timing right, very quiet.. service was generally very good and we really enjoyed the marguerites after a 20 year abstinence – needs must. Great place for a light lunch and for having a beer at the end of the day, watch out though because after 5.30pm, it’s overrun with kids who are waiting to get into the Italian restaurant which is right next door to the Surf bar. Food there was ok..

We ate in the Fish restaurant, maybe we just chose badly, my son and I each had Red Snapper, pretty pitiful specimens at that. It’s been said by other reviewers and I think its true - average food, really expensive, erratic service and in our opinion not worth the money. In all the restaurants it’s inevitable that bored kids start running around unsupervised, I’m not anti kids at all, just worn down by the sheer weight of numbers/noise and the desire for adult space & time.

SAGRES. We soon started eating off site – try the Hang Out bar when you come off the beach, cheap and cheerful Surf bar for everyone, it’s run by two Italians and the Pizzas are the best in town. There are other great restaurants, try ‘Mums’, you will need to book though. Restaurant Carlos is good – avoid D’Italia at all costs.

VILLAS. On our first night it became obvious we had a problem with, well to use the Hotel description “earthy smells” to you and I that’s drain/sewerage smells. It took 4 days and several visits from the maintenance guys before the hotel finally gave in and moved us. Suzana Gaspar the Rooms Division Manager personally took charge of the situation and we were moved to a Bay view property and then because the resort was full we were moved to a private Villa for the last two nights - Bravo, we feel good about the Villa outcome because the Resort recognized there was a problem, however, it was inconvenient as we had to pack up twice and were homeless for 3 hours on the last move (no where to hide from the small whiny people.)

Summary

We really enjoyed the time we spent offsite but we won’t be coming back to Martinhal as there isn’t enough to occupy our teenagers for the price we paid.

1. Overall a beautiful location, hire a car and explore the coastline, there are some fantastic beaches within easy reach. Bordeira beach is a must see.
2. Martinhal Resort is a lovely property and a great place to be if you have a young family. We especially liked the Bay House & Surf bar.
3. Sagres has a number of really good Portuguese restaurants and the food & service is generally superior to the resort.
4. Learn to Surf and if you do, use Wavesensations – they know what they are doing and how to exceed expectations.
5. Have an Ayurvedic massage with Elsa and know that it will be one of the best in the world.

Room Tip: Front row Ocean view houses have the best view & sheltered gardens

Thank you for taking the time to share your detail impressions on your most recent stay with us.

We regret to know that you considered our choice of activities limited. Please allow us to inform that besides the Fox Club and the Pick & Choose Program we also have the Explores & Adventure Club which is full of different exciting activities for teenagers aged between 9 and 18 and which is run by our Leisure Department. On our Adventurers Programme we have weekly activities which includes Archery, Geocoaching, Beach Games, Soccer Challenge, Team Building to name a few which are all free of charge. We do have other activities which have a cost involved as they are booked through outsourcing companies who come to the resort to collect our clients should they wish to take part.
In addition we also have on offer a wide selection of sports activities, to name a few: water sports, Tennis and Football Academies, Padel Tennis, etc.

We are glad to hear your sons enjoyed their Surf Experience while they were here and had the chance to visit some of the stunning beaches perfect for surfing along this coastline.

Elsa was thrilled to know your appreciation of her service. Thank you for recognising her professionalism and attitude.

We regret to know of your impressions towards the food in our As Dunas restaurant and please note that they have been registered with our F&B Management Team. However we are glad to inform that according to our most recent Guest Surveys, the satisfaction levels on our restaurants have increased considerably in the last two weeks.

As was explained at the time when you reported a problem with your Ocean House we had to check what we had available as we are in the middle of high season with a very high occupancy and availability was scarce. Luckily we were able to resolve the problem for you and were able to move you for the remainder of your stay.

We all look forward to host you and your family again for a much improved holiday experience.
