We spent a week at Martinhal (at one of the townhouses) with my husband, two daughters and friends. We had a wonderful holiday in a place where you get great service, you have friendly staff where and when you need, providing personalised service. They also have fantastic facilities and activities for kids, with a Kids Club that is open from early in the morning to 6pm, with professionals prepared to take care of kids, entertain them -high quality new materials and toys-, our daughters loved it! The gastronomy is also excellent. Martinhal has different restaurants (stylish, modern), with delicious food and fresh ingredients. The location is perfect, just 50' driving from Faro Airport, and the weather is most of the time sunny and warm.
For those who want to spend time in a rather adults environment, the perfect choice is the hotel boutique at Martinhal, we saw some rooms and they are great, I would definetely stay there for a short break with my husband, or would recommend for couples or group of friends without children. The restaurant O Terraca at the Hotel is so good, we had dinner there, and enjoyed delicious signature dishes and cocktails.

My wife and I and our two daughters (aged 4.5 and 6) spent a wonderful ten-day family holiday last week in one of the Ocean View Apartments. The view was absolutely fantastic, and the Sagres region stunning. Virtually everything you need for a relaxing and/or energetic holiday is all within a five minute walk in the resort, and the Portuguese hospitality ans service is at your disposal wherever you decide to go (be it at the kids' club, at the swimming pool bars, at reception while checking in/out or at the restaurants). Except for a few must visits to the local beaches around Sagres (Mareca, Bulnes) and enjoy the DJ party on Saturday night and a must visit to Lagos, we didn't leave the resort. Our daughters enjoyed the activities and independence they got (of course while being supervised by either ourselves or the staff) and were fully occupied every day.

The highlight for us was our 12 year anniversary dinner at the O Terraco restaurant with Chitra, Romain, Kolleen, Edward, Sebastian and Guadalupe in the hotel. The food was Michelin star standard and the service was excellent. There is no need to dress up - smart casual is acceptable.

I highly recommend Martinhal and will definitely return. Coming with more friends a MUST

Till next time, Willie, Clau, Maggie and Jossie

We stayed here in Martinhal with our two young children in July 2010 and had one of our best family holidays ever.

It is just open but they have got so much right and have clearly really thought about what families want from a holiday with lots of self catering, great space and entertainment and friendly staff.

The location on an amazing clear blue water beach in western portugal was a great start. You just walk from the beach pool down a bamboo walkway. The water is so clear that you can see all the fish swimming around you in the rock pools and while cold it does have great waves for family wave jumping and lots of watersports especially wind and kite surfing.

We had a two bed sea view house with amazing furniture and a huge balcony with fat boy bean bags to lounge around on to get out of the mid day heat or for a drink looking out over the islands when the children had collapsed in to bed asleep. The design and furniture were very high spec and really comfortable and far better in terms of value for space and specification than any of the luxury hotels we have stayed in before.

The pools are heated and we moved from pool to pool or spent time on the beach depending on the activities going on at the time. There are dedicated family activities each day and our two had tennis lessons, played paddle tennis and played pool games. There are lots more activities both on and off the resort. The staff at every turn were friendly and welcoming.

In the evening there was a village square with family activities, bicyles for the kids, a games room, a cycle track created one night for the children to learn the rules of the road and entertainers including jugglers and flame throwers so it was hard to drag the children away from this restaurant. We did dine in the beach restaurant as well as locally in Sagres a few nights but not in the fine dining restaurant about which there were good reports from other guests.

In the local area which is a protected national park there are some amazing surf and sheltered beaches which we explored including Cordorama and Beliche.

All in a great family stay in a high spec hotel which really welcomed families a beautiful part of Portugal. We will be back!

We have just returned from the most magnificent 2 weeks in Martinhal, where to start.

Firstly, it is definitely very kid friendly and the acitvities and effort that goes on to keep the kids entertained is fantastic. As well as many group activities whther it is tennis, scuba diving, water polo there is also a courtyard beside one of the hotel restaurants where the kids can cycle around in safety and where there was regular entertainment from jugglers, clowns etc.

The rooms themselves are very comfortable and we had one with a sea view which was an added bonus. While July is hot in portugal there is a constant breeze which is very refreshing and keeps you from getting too warm. There is still some challenges with the tv as they have put in a very complicated system which i am sure will be excellent but was not 100% there yet,

We loved the beach being so close to the hotel, the games room (xbox, pool table, table tennis etc) at night for the klids, the other beaches near by (the one near Villa de Bispo is spectacular). Sagres is not very commercial and is quite portuguese s owhile we enjoyed the restaurants it would not have the same selection as up at Quinta de lago for example.

The staff were very friendly and more importantly very open to helping ourt or changing something if it needed, i am sure it will be even better when we return next year!

We arrived at Martinhal before it had officially opened so we were expecting that ther would be some things nort cm

Picture this.............. 7.30am you open your eyes, you look straight ahead, and your day starts with the most beautiful view from your bed, straight out to the white sand of - Martinhal Beach.

We are just back having spent 2 weeks in an Ocean View House at this Resort, and loved, loved loved it !

Now picture this, in our upside down house, you get out of bed and go up stairs to the Living/Kitchen, all a very well equiped and confortable area, and once again, a feast for the eyes, as the whole space opens on to a very generous Balcony with glorious views, taking in the beach, the beautiful harbour and the landscape of Capt St Vincent.....ahaaaa Bliss.

The resort appeared very busy and is very child/teenager friendly ( We had two teenagers with us ) but we never had any sense of this in our house. I spent hours in the comfort of our balcony reading, appreciating the peace and quiet, while watching my husband and kids Windsuf across the bay like a moving picture. More bliss

The restaurant in the square has a take out facility and we chose to avail of this on evenings when we didnt venture out and it was lovely ( try the Lamb Korma ) As we love the beach we tended to go there most days ( 3 mins walk away ) but the facilities in the resort are excellent. The Blue room was a big hit with our teenagers, computer games, table tennis other teenagers etc, although they did feel it needed air conditioning for comfort. As its only their 1st season open ,staff in all areas were full of good will, and anxious to please , but were lacking in delivery, I feel there is a geniune intention to improve this and with better training a bit more time an experience this will come right. We feel we got a fair deal and allowed for teething problems.

The weather was beautiful every day of our stay but I love the fact you get the wind and a bit of a chill in the evening. The contrast is great having spent years going to Alvor where it can be very muggy at night, this region gives balance to those of us who love the sun but like to breath fresh air at the end of the day. We rented a car which is a bonus if you want to get around, Sagres is a quiet town consisting of surf shops ,a few bars, a good supermarket but not much else, but I suspect this area is finding strenght and I hope this resort sets the standard.

We will be back, loved it, loved it, loved it !

I have just returned from Martinhal after a superb 8 day break. Considering the resort has just opened everything was first class, We are a family of 6 with the children ranging from 16 to 6 and we all enjoyed the holiday. We stayed in the hotel but the apartments looked very nice. Great service and food. Right on the beach which I believe can get very windy but we were lucky and only had a cooling light breeze.
Well away from crowded beaches of Val do Lobo etc - bliss.

Stayed four nights at this brand new beach resort,
and one resumes it all: MEMORABLE!
We booked a beach suite and loved everything about it! From the complementary drinks (all non alcoholic) that are restocked daily to the two times a day room service, everything about the Martinhal was beyond reproach.
The site in itself is beautiful. Attention to detail is meticulous.
The staff - especially the two young men who greated us - always helpful and prompt to respond.
Both restaurants at the Hotel part are excellent!
O'Terraço must be by far the best restaurant in the area!!! The chef learned is craft with no less than Alain Ducasse!!!
Have a drink in the lounge before, it is great!
Thursday nights, a live band is there and sets the mood for a great evening of great food and great music!
As Dunas for lunch is great! Fresh lobster you can choose yourself!!!

We were glad to have chosen the Beach Suites on the Hotel part of the Resort for less children. During the day, the pool was litteraly invaded by families with young children. Not ideal for a romantic getaway...But with the comfortable chairs and vue from our suite, we were able to retreat for some quiet time.

Very few negative points:
Bed linen however is not the most comfortable we have encountered. And towels are still so new, white fluffs were evrywhere and not great when wearing black clothes...Wireless service is complicated. Then again, it seems to be the same everywhere in Portugal.

If you have a navigational system with your rental, it won'y find the resort. You have to enter Martinhal as the city of destination, not Sagres.

The hotel location in itself is great if you plan a beach vacation. It is a bit out of the way from everything. Sagres is closest but not much happening there! A supermarket, a few little restaurants and bars, surf shops, etc...Great place to relax and enjoy the site!

Visited Lagos & Albufeira.
If you're visited many beach cities in Europe, these two are not really worth the detour.
Very tourist trap, very young crowd (I'm 36 and crowd is more around the early twenties).
Albufeira seemed like a Portuguese version of Cancun...Lagos is more of a marina town.
Restaurants typical tourit traps...I was told Lagos is very trendy & jetset. Far from it! We're very far from Paris, Milan, Mykonos, New York, Los Angeles, Barcelona, Las Vegas, Monaco and even my hometown, Montreal!

Sagres is a quaint little town. VERY windy! And when it is, it can be quite chilly! We had to go out and buy ourselves sweaters! But when the winds calm down, it is warm. No wonder the area is sought out for surfing and wind surfing!

Henri the Navigator fort and the Capo Sao Vicente are worth visiting.
