“Really nice resort and a lovely undiscovered corner of Portugal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2010

Just back from 2 weeks at Martinhal. What a fab place. Kids loved all the facilities plus all the other kids. A few teething troubles with service versus other '5 star resorts' but pretty damn good. Ocean view villas the best located (Mimosa ones quite a walk to the beach). Swimming pools are absolutely spectacular. Holiday highlight though were the local surfing beaches 20 mins drive away (e.g. Cordoama) which have everything North Cornwall's have but no crowds or rain. P.S. take care on the trampoline in front of the seafood restaurant; 3 children taken to hospital with bashed/gashed heads while we were there. P.P.S. we appreciated ever present wind across the resort; it's only obtrusive on the local Martinhal beach... elsewhere it ensures you're never hot & sticky.

Dear Wandsworth Dad

Many thanks for your feedback – we are delighted that you enjoyed your recent stay at Martinhal.

Regrettably we did have an incident whereby two children had to be treated for cuts after colliding on the trampoline. As you may have noticed, this is an unsupervised area with a very clear notice to that effect. The trampoline is strictly for use by one child at a time and this information (as well as the other relevant rules and regulations), is clearly displayed.

Whilst we do everything that we can to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our guests, Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel covers a large area and our younger guests remain under the supervision of their parents or guardians throughout their stay. The only exception to this is for those children who are officially registered with our fully supervised and licensed kid’s club “Raposinhos”.

If parents have any specific questions, they are very welcome to contact the Martinhal team who will be happy to provide further information and advice.

Best regards

We got a great deal on this hotel as it was newly opened at the time of booking. Upgraded on arrival to a luxury beach hut but the cheapest rooms looked great too. Modern with lots of nice extras - IPOD speakers, free soft drinks in the minibar every day, comfy beds and furniture in the rooms and balconies. Part of a complex with villas and townhouses. Next time would stay in one of those as opposed to the hotel - we became bored of the 3 restaurants and the complex isn't walking distance from the nearest town/village. Service in the restaurants needs a lot of improvement. When we mentioned this, it was attributed to August being busy but none of the restaurants were full at the time. I think the staff just need a lot more training - no one seems to be in charge which is irritating as prices are high. Trendy decked pool with giant fatboy bean beanbags for sunbathing. Great sandy beach especially if you like watersports. Strong winds as the hotel is remote and right on the windy atlantic. Occasionally too windy to sunbathe but other times the breeze was welcome. Not sure I'd have paid full price, so lucky we got a bargain, given the service needs improving but a very enjoyable holiday nevertheless and I'd go back next year but stay in a house/villa and thereby avoid any less than perfect service. A bit remote but we drove to nearby Lagos for some great sightseeing.

Just back from 2 weeks at this great new family resort. A great combination of hotel and self-catering: had a lovely 3-bedroom house with daily maid service but a really well equipped kitchen to prepare meals. There's even a take away service and the curry was good! The space was fantastic and lovely balcony too. Three lovely pools and a club room for the teenagers to get their fix of computer games and meet other kids.

Although it's very new, all the building and hard landscaping is finished. There's one final area still to be opened but its just soft landscaping to be done there by the looks of it.

The Terrace restaurant was really fantastic and of Michelin star quality. They've got a great tasting menu and serve lots of Portuguese specialities and locally produced food. The "transparency of duck" was to die for!

The beach is lovely too and the water incredibly clean and clear. Some times there is a very strong wind though which is great for windsurfing but not good for sunbathing. Wise to bring at least one sweater for the evenings as when the wind blows it can get a bit chilly.

All in all a great holiday and I highly recommend it.

We spent a week at Martinhal (at one of the townhouses) with my husband, two daughters and friends. We had a wonderful holiday in a place where you get great service, you have friendly staff where and when you need, providing personalised service. They also have fantastic facilities and activities for kids, with a Kids Club that is open from early in the morning to 6pm, with professionals prepared to take care of kids, entertain them -high quality new materials and toys-, our daughters loved it! The gastronomy is also excellent. Martinhal has different restaurants (stylish, modern), with delicious food and fresh ingredients. The location is perfect, just 50' driving from Faro Airport, and the weather is most of the time sunny and warm.
For those who want to spend time in a rather adults environment, the perfect choice is the hotel boutique at Martinhal, we saw some rooms and they are great, I would definetely stay there for a short break with my husband, or would recommend for couples or group of friends without children. The restaurant O Terraca at the Hotel is so good, we had dinner there, and enjoyed delicious signature dishes and cocktails.

My wife and I and our two daughters (aged 4.5 and 6) spent a wonderful ten-day family holiday last week in one of the Ocean View Apartments. The view was absolutely fantastic, and the Sagres region stunning. Virtually everything you need for a relaxing and/or energetic holiday is all within a five minute walk in the resort, and the Portuguese hospitality ans service is at your disposal wherever you decide to go (be it at the kids' club, at the swimming pool bars, at reception while checking in/out or at the restaurants). Except for a few must visits to the local beaches around Sagres (Mareca, Bulnes) and enjoy the DJ party on Saturday night and a must visit to Lagos, we didn't leave the resort. Our daughters enjoyed the activities and independence they got (of course while being supervised by either ourselves or the staff) and were fully occupied every day.

The highlight for us was our 12 year anniversary dinner at the O Terraco restaurant with Chitra, Romain, Kolleen, Edward, Sebastian and Guadalupe in the hotel. The food was Michelin star standard and the service was excellent. There is no need to dress up - smart casual is acceptable.

I highly recommend Martinhal and will definitely return. Coming with more friends a MUST

Till next time, Willie, Clau, Maggie and Jossie

We stayed here in Martinhal with our two young children in July 2010 and had one of our best family holidays ever.

It is just open but they have got so much right and have clearly really thought about what families want from a holiday with lots of self catering, great space and entertainment and friendly staff.

The location on an amazing clear blue water beach in western portugal was a great start. You just walk from the beach pool down a bamboo walkway. The water is so clear that you can see all the fish swimming around you in the rock pools and while cold it does have great waves for family wave jumping and lots of watersports especially wind and kite surfing.

We had a two bed sea view house with amazing furniture and a huge balcony with fat boy bean bags to lounge around on to get out of the mid day heat or for a drink looking out over the islands when the children had collapsed in to bed asleep. The design and furniture were very high spec and really comfortable and far better in terms of value for space and specification than any of the luxury hotels we have stayed in before.

The pools are heated and we moved from pool to pool or spent time on the beach depending on the activities going on at the time. There are dedicated family activities each day and our two had tennis lessons, played paddle tennis and played pool games. There are lots more activities both on and off the resort. The staff at every turn were friendly and welcoming.

In the evening there was a village square with family activities, bicyles for the kids, a games room, a cycle track created one night for the children to learn the rules of the road and entertainers including jugglers and flame throwers so it was hard to drag the children away from this restaurant. We did dine in the beach restaurant as well as locally in Sagres a few nights but not in the fine dining restaurant about which there were good reports from other guests.

In the local area which is a protected national park there are some amazing surf and sheltered beaches which we explored including Cordorama and Beliche.

All in a great family stay in a high spec hotel which really welcomed families a beautiful part of Portugal. We will be back!

We have just returned from the most magnificent 2 weeks in Martinhal, where to start.

Firstly, it is definitely very kid friendly and the acitvities and effort that goes on to keep the kids entertained is fantastic. As well as many group activities whther it is tennis, scuba diving, water polo there is also a courtyard beside one of the hotel restaurants where the kids can cycle around in safety and where there was regular entertainment from jugglers, clowns etc.

The rooms themselves are very comfortable and we had one with a sea view which was an added bonus. While July is hot in portugal there is a constant breeze which is very refreshing and keeps you from getting too warm. There is still some challenges with the tv as they have put in a very complicated system which i am sure will be excellent but was not 100% there yet,

We loved the beach being so close to the hotel, the games room (xbox, pool table, table tennis etc) at night for the klids, the other beaches near by (the one near Villa de Bispo is spectacular). Sagres is not very commercial and is quite portuguese s owhile we enjoyed the restaurants it would not have the same selection as up at Quinta de lago for example.

The staff were very friendly and more importantly very open to helping ourt or changing something if it needed, i am sure it will be even better when we return next year!

We arrived at Martinhal before it had officially opened so we were expecting that ther would be some things nort cm
