This was our first foreign travel excursion with my daughter (22 months.) I chose the hotel because of the unique combination of luxury and a family friendly atmosphere (even for young children) and was not disappointed. Martinhal made it possible for my husband and I to relax on vacation with a toddler (no easy feat). I requested safety gates and outlet protectors prior to our stay and we found them installed and a highchair set up when we arrived in our room (and all provided at no extra cost). The hotel throughout seemed designed with small children in mind. Each of the pool areas included a shallow kiddie pool and several were enclosed by a large wall. That made it possible for us to relax in a bean bag chair while our daughter stayed corralled in a limited area (which made her happy because she had some freedom to walk around and us happy because we didn't need to follow closely behind her everywhere.) The glasses for drinks provided by the pool looked like typical barware but were, in fact, made of plastic which again helped ease our stress about her possibly knocking over a drink. The square by the market and the casual restaurant had activities set up and hotel employees at certain hours to entertain the kids while the adults finished their meal and looked on. Finally, the furniture in the hotel had rounded edges for the most part and an open floor plan. I couldn't have asked for more to make traveling with a toddler easier.

With respect to other aspects of the hotel, we were pleased with the food and service at all three restaurants. My husband and I enjoyed our massages at the spa and my mohter-in-law loved her facial. The robes provided at the spa were strangely small, however, as if they shrunk in the wash (my husband and I are fairly athletic, not overweight, and found the robe barely covered us.) The weather was absolutely ideal for sunbathing and lounging. Often on vacation, I can only sit and read for 30 minutes at a time before I'm so overheated I have to go in the pool or ocean to cool off. At Martinhal, I could just sit by the pool or on the beach for hours and relax. The sun was very warm but the breeze helped make it feel perfectly comfrotable at all times. At night, the wind does make it a bit cool but I was prepared with some sweaters and felt fine.

Overall, we had a fantastic stay and would absolutely recommend the hotel - especially to those traveling with young children.

My wife and I and our 22 month old son have just returned from a 1 week stay in one of the Ocean View Villas. The villas were fantastic, nice and new and clean and with everything you need to holiday on a self catering basis if thats your preference. We ate out most lunchtimes and nights but enjoyed pastry breakfasts and the odd sandwich in the room. The on site supermarket was good enough for us for for one week but we may have gone into Sagres for more choice if we stayed longer.

We found the food in all 3 restaurants excellent, especially the tasting menu in the Terrace which we treated ourselves to and used the babysitting service for that night which worked perfecly. We had no issues with the service, maybe a bit slow at times but who's in a rush! Again for 1 week the choice of childrens food in the restaurants was ok but if we had stayed longer we may have struggled to find variety to keep him interested.

The pools and beach are very clean and our son had a great time, especially as the tide seemed to change during our stay and lagoons were created on the beach which he could wade in and have great fun running from the incoming waves.

My wife and I both used the spa for a massage and that was very relaxing and a welcome break from chasing round after our son.

Overall we had a great time, would love to go back and given the resport only opened in this year they are doing an excellent job!

Spent a week in a a partial-Ocean View villa, with a lovely terrace overlooking the beach and gardens. Really well equipped and with a stylish decor, including one of the much-mentioned Fatboy giant bean bags, ideal for lounging on the terrace with a book. The beach is truly lovely; even in August there was no sense of it being too crowded. On calm days the water looks more like the Balearic islands, and wasn’t too cold. The wind did howl some evenings, but as mentioned in other reviews, during the day it keeps temperatures pleasant. The resort cleverly absorbs all of its guests easily, and one of the pools was always quiet. The Blue Room is ideal for kids to go off and have their own free time. Other free family activities included scuba diving trial in pool, padel tennis introduction, football matches etc. One son did a surf course for two days at a nearby beach which was well run; lots of very unspoilt beaches nearby. Good supermarket five mins away in Sagres, along with a few restaurants and bars but not much else. As for the hotel restaurants, we tried the beach one and the family one in the square, the latter seemed rather disorganised, though the food was fine. You can order take-away, too, and this flexibility really makes for an easy holiday. Staff all very friendly and helpful, though the cleaning staff did seem to pop by at odd times of the day. Clients mainly Brits and Portuguese, with a few Spanish families trickling in towards the end. Check out the great offers outside July and August. To sum up: our kids loved it; so a big thumbs up from us.

Great place to spend a romantic time or a family holiday
There is plenty of things to do in the resort, tennis, ecokart, windsurfing, etc..
Big variety and great tasting food sourced locally
Great time to visit is especially autumn and spring as weather is guaranteed to be sunny and nature looks at it's best.
Excellent and very friendly service!!!

I felt compelled to write something on this site as I recently heard on the radio that people only write reviews if they have a bad experience. Martinhal for us was just what we were looking for, our family holiday could not have been better! Just over an hours drive from the airport (easy drive), and we were at the resort. Martinhal has certainly found the right balance of grown up spaces v's freedom for children. Our two loved the fact they could go to The Blu Room on their own and play table tennis or even take a bike and ride it around the resort. There was plenty to keep them occupied both at the resort and the beach. The food and service were excellent, plenty of choice between the 3 restaurants. We stayed in an ocean view apartment which was beautifully decorated and the beds were so comfortable. The views are spectacular and a brisk walk along the beach in the morning was a real favourite - wish the dog could have come too!

Stayed with 3 children aged 6,9 and 2 in Ocean view villa for one week. Accomodation high quality, well equipped, spacious and clean. The resort has huge potential although it lacked consistancy in service. However what the staff lacked in training and support they made up for in friendliness and eagarness to please. Front of house staff were excellant and I am sure in time the service in the restaurants and bars will improve. One terrible habit was bringing out the food one order at a time so for a family of 5 the first person would have finished by the time the last plate arrived - not great for a family meal! Food delicous in Terrace restaurant and definately 5 star. Huge variety of sports to enteratain kids, football pitch, paddle tennis, tennis, basketball, kids playground. Pools were warm and lots of umbrellas, loungers and bean bags. We used the creche a few times which was well equipped and efficiently run. Baby sitting easy to organise and two good beach cafes/bars walking distance from resort when you get tired of on site catering. The shop was next to useless and even ran out of fresh milk! However supermarket 5 mins away and if you don't have car a 12euro taxi ride will allow you to stock up for week. Big freezer and fridge in apartments. Beautiful, peaceful, under developed part of Algarve and lovely to walk along cliffs. The beach was good with facilities to rent canoes, paddle boats and surf boards. Wind was a welcome release from the heat and definately a bonus rather than a hindurance. We missed it on the days it was still!!! We will definately return to the resort which I think will mature with the the new landscaping into a truly wonderful family resort.

We stayed for 6 days in an Grand Deluxe Ocean House. We were very impressed with the quality of furnishings and the comfort of the villa - top class even for those used to expensive business hotels. The resort infrastructure is also superb, with luxurious pools and many activities for children. Even though the resort had opened only 5 weeks before our stay, things were capably managed, despite other comments we saw on this site.
