“Sao Jorgeous on Sao Jorge”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

Superlative accommodations in outstanding setting. This hotel is in a great location on Sao Jorge which allows easy access to anywhere you want to go; good proximity to Velas and yet when you are in your apartment you have complete tranquility and amazing views. The grounds are extremely well kept, as are the accommodations. "Max" was the "go to guy" while we were there and he was very knowledgeable and helpful. The morning we were leaving Max called to ask us if we knew the ferry was coming 20 minutes early; it was coming directly from Failal and he saw our car in the parking lot! With his alert we were able to make the ferry...otherwise we would have literally "missed the boat."

Breakfast was ample and good variety. Staff was optimal in every situation.
Absolutely would not have changed a thing and would not consider any other lodging should return!

Room Tip: Request an upstairs location facing the water.

Excellent and kind staff, excellent conditions of the apartment. Nice pool. We'll kept garden. Quite pleasant place to relax. We were on vacation and the staff was quite helpful regarding directions for food and transport.
Overall we were quite happy with this place and if returning to this exotic island we would certainly stay here again.
The resort is outside the city but the surrounding is peaceful and you may relax by the pool admiring Pico mountain just ahead of you.

This is one of the place of the world to make holiday. It is quiet and you have a wonderful view of Velas, Pico and Faial. There are two Swimming pool one inside and one outside, a Sauna and Fitness Studio with a lot of different machines. Some Apartment are with bath tube with whirlpool. The breakfast for 5 euro is fantastic. Airport is 3 km nearby and there is a pick up Service. This is the next place you must make holiday. The people there are really friendly. Thank you Max for the great holiday you arrange for us. Sebastien

Room Tip: The superior Apartment have á fantastic view.

What a wonderful place! I had a lovely two room private villa with large expansive windows. The view of Velas and the harbor was breathtaking. And then there was the view of Pico!! The quiet was almost deafening in the mornings and evening execpt for the sounds of the neighboring roosters. The restaurant was quite good and the cook and waiter were great. We requested a special dish for our last night there and although they did not have the ingredients on had, they went out in the morning and bought what was needed. Now that is service. Flavio is also great..a man of numerous duties but he still manages to be always available.
Sao Jorge is not to missed when you are in the Azores. The entire island is fantastic, the people are fantastic, etc, etc.

When we arrived there, we just could not believe that a small and remote island as São Jorge would have a hotel which is breathtakingly beautiful as the Cantinho is!
Arriving by boat (Cruzeiro do Canal, 1 hour from São Roque do Pico, wonderful panoramas!) the small town/village of Velas is already a very lovely surprise. 10 minutes later when you arrive at this lovely, modern hotel designed by local architect Julio Rodrigues, you feel to have arrived in a place out of this world in natural beauty. The position of this hotel makes it all! But really be aware to only opt for the best room categories. The rooms in the second row do offer much less spectacular views and are disappointing. Once you travel to such a remote gem, you must opt for the best accomodation available!
The architecture is modern, cubistic, fresh, positive. There are huge windows with spectacular panoramas everywhere!
Lovely reception area and bar. Very lovely restaurant, nice, cool, modern design. The cook (there is just one young lady, the hotel with 19 rooms is small...) is a young lady. She is so hospitable, so kind, so natural, so sweet. She comes to your table to make suggestions, and the results of her cooking activities was just divine! Try "atúm", in all my life I never ate such a delicious tuna fish. Also her sweets and deserts (try the "especies", it's a speciality from here, mmmmh).
We chose Suite A1, it is the best accomodation this hotel offers. Upper floor, breathtaking views onto Velas, absolute privacy, very quiet (except some silly dogs making noise at times - it's a fact in all the Azores that people are educated and very nice, but dogs are opposite and you start hating them, because there are just too many and most of them make noise in an unacceptable way). The décor of the Suite was lovely. Nice living room with huge windows, kitchenette (well equipped), a master bedroom with king size bed facing Velas (what a view!), and a second bedroom with twin beds facing east (view from here is less).
There is a nice outdoor swimming pool, and for sure the best equipped gym of the "Triângulo" (that means Pico, Faial and São Jorge).
It'a place where you might book 3 nights, but then you will extend to 5, 7 or more - because it is amazingly beautiful! In my opinion it is the nicest hotel of all the 3 islands of the "Triângulo", Faial and also Pico offer nothing comparable so far!
São Jorge is a very particular and beautiful island. Velas is a charming place, the western part of the island (Sete Fontes) is spectacularly beautiful (miradouros with breathtaking views - go there for sunset!). Urzelina iscsaid to be the nicest village. I did not like it and found it neglected and badly kept. Make sure to enter the Santa Barbara church in Manadas (nicest church in the Azores). It is worth driving all the way east to Topo. Landscape there is totally different, therefore it's interesting to visit the place. However, THE highlight of São Jorge are the unique FAJÃS. It is an absolute must to visit the Fajã dos Cubres and Santo Cristo on the north coast, the Fajã dos Vimes on the south coast and Fajã de São João in the south east. In my opinion it is the highlight!
But whatever you explore on São Jorge, you always will love to get back to Cantinho das Buganvilias, because it isan oasis of beauty, of peace, of nice living, of excellent local food and of smiling Azorean faces. A great OBRIGADO to Bráulio, to Max, to the best cook of São Jorge (beijinhos e um forte abraço para você!!), and also to the ladies who take excellent care of the rooms. They all made our stay just an unforgettable one! I was travelling around the Azores for 80 days so far. Cantinho das Buganvilias is the place where I was most happy of all. Pico is my beloved island, but there is no comparable place to stay...

Room Tip: A1 - the best in every way! Really ask for those rooms in the FIRST ROW. If not, your next view are...
