When I asked my kids what their favorite place to visit in Sao Miguel, they quickly answered Furnas!
First thing you see is a large scenic lake with a historic pretty old church in the distance. As you drive further you can start to see the clouds of steam coming from the geysers. Once you get into the parking lot you can smell the rotten egg type scent they give off. You get use to it pretty quickly since its so interesting to see the water bubbling out of the ground. We were lucky enough to watch the locals lower the pots of the traditional cozido into the ground to be cooked by the heat of the geysers. The entire process was pretty cool. My only regret is not getting to try some. The day we visited, there was also a snack truck with some seating where you can enjoy the view. Not sure if that is there every day.

Not an incredible town to stroll around but we loved the small hot springs on the outskirts and walking round the botanical gardens, a great way to spend half a day.

I Love Furnas. It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever layed eyes on. I will surely be going back so I can lay in the Geothermal Iron Springs all day long at Terra Nostre Parque. It is magickal and healing to just be breathing in the fresh air here. The people are friendly and helpful and I dream about owning property here one day. Make sure you eat Cozido from the Caldeiras. It is interesting to say the least and the local wine, cheese and bread is outstanding. This place is Breathtaking.

Furnas has more to do and see without the large city feel than anywhere else on the island. Take in the hot baths, see the Terra Nostra garden and orange pool, Eat corn cooked right in the scalding steam vents, and ensure you eat food cooked on the shores of Lagoa Furnas (cozido)
