“Monument to Emigrants, many that went to the USA”

Monumento ao Emigrante
Reviewed 28 June 2018

This statue set is in the very nice plaza that is right by the cruise ship harbor. Many of the emigrants went to the USA, Massachusetts being a favorite place.

Not all that interesting or pleasing, this is street sculpture on the major road along the port. In a traffic circle.

This is almost a round about on the road. As you walk through the lower section of the town (to the left when facing the town coming out of the port). The tour guide we had explain the meaning and that the town's people are proud but also sad as it was a time of hardship that caused people to leave the islands to find work and a means to provide for their families.

Nothing remarkable this statue is across the street from the Military museum. I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it.

This statue commemorates the many Azorians who emigrated from these isolated islands, especially during the 1950s, when times here were very hard. While one salutes the sentiment, the poses of the figures said nothing to us, though we stopped while passing several times. The statue looked like something you'd expect to find in a former communist country to symbolise some noble sentiment the government wanted Joe Public to embrace.
If you visit Ponta Delgada you won't miss it on the south side of San Francisco Square, close to the centre of town and the port. What do you make of it?
