This is a monument to pay homage to the immigrants who left Sao Miguel to seek a better life somewhere else. It is only significant to those of us who have had relatives who left. Between 1878 and 1913, some 20,000 Azorean immigrants left Ponta Delgada, Ribeira Grande, Vila Franca do Campo, Nordeste, Lagoa and Povacao (these cities are written on the plague) to work on the sugar plantations in Hawaii. Many of my relatives, including my great-grandparents migrated to Hawaii in the late 1800s. The family is saying good-bye to Sao Miguel. I was born and raised in Hawaii and still live there. I met cousins here through DNA so seeing this statue was an emotional experience for me.

I wish that I could find out a bit more about the background to this monument - maybe that is the point to question. i wonder if it was linked to the Spanish civil war ?
As statues / monuments go this is modern, well positioned, and a valiant attempt to give credence to a difficult subject.
Worth stopping and seeing - it is just opposite the gateway entrance to the Forte do Sao Bras.

This statue set is in the very nice plaza that is right by the cruise ship harbor. Many of the emigrants went to the USA, Massachusetts being a favorite place.
