“A must visit especially if”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2014

you can see it on a good day. But a fantastic site. We were driven around the full perimeter and also saw it from the lake edge. One of the great sights of the Azores which, in any case, is a must visit destination

“Binoculars Required”

When you reach the top of the mountain overlooking Cidades, you really need to pray that the fog has lifted. It is a beautiful site. If there is fog, you can go down a ways from the mountain and there is another viewing point that may not be as foggy. I am now talking about driving there and not hiking as I did not hike at my age. In Cidades there is a church, St, Nicholas that should be seen. It is plain and not overwhelming but there is some reverance about the place. There is a convenience store in this town as well as comfort food.

“Untouched piece of paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 July 2014

Everything we saw, visited, tasted, walked through, every local we spoke to, was an amazing experience.
We tried to walk around the caldeira but at one point we realised that we could'nt continue forth nor go back (due to a hurricane taking place two weeks earlier) that destroyed all the paths and directions. It was completely dark, so we called our tour operator and in about 30 minutes we had the fire brigade that rescued us on a water scooter.
The people from Azores are fantastic.

“Well, to be honest...”

After reading all the travel guides about the caldeira and its incomparable beauty, we expected more. OK, it ís nice overlooking the caldeira with its two lakes and the village at its borders. But even on this clear day, standing at the crater rim, I could not suppress some disappointment. Maybe I'm spoiled...
