Azoris Angra Garden Plaza Hotel
Reviewed 28 July 2013

We stayed at a sister hotel on Faial and what a difference. This hotel could be pretty good but has all the hallmarks of being poorly managed. The air conditioning did not work and all of our group had the same problem which was reported but resulted in no action. The rooms are small but those at the back have a nice view into a public garden and are not affected by any traffic noise. The breakfast buffet is best avoided as are the appalling croissants, on one morning the buffet had no jam or marmalade (staff said "out of stock"). The terrace bar at the top of the hotel has a wonderful view but some of the bottles of wine and other drinks have been maturing into vinegar for some time. Do not let this hotel put you off staying at the same chains' Faial Resort Hotel which is clearly run by competant management. It would not need much to push this up average and removing the rip off charge for wifi would be a good start.

Room Tip: Stay at the back looking into the gardens

Dear Guest
I am sorry that your stay at Angra Garden Hotel was not as expected.
Unfortunatly, we did have some problems with air conditioning, already solved.
Concerning the other problems, I already made an inquiry and solved that those problems aswell.
Thanks for your words, hope that you will be back in Azores and see for yourself what I just mentionned.
Best regards
G. Figueira

Great view on the garden, central location. Arrived at the end of April, normally the weather should be better that time of the year. The hotel turned off the central heating, so it was impossible to dry wet clothes and shoes during the night. Rooms were ok, but cold since the temperature at night and the lack of heating possibility. Apparently there was a problem with the heating of the water in the bathroom too, because it was not possible to take a hot shower, the water was lukewarm, also not pleasant after a day out in the rain. Expected more from a 3* hotel.

Cannot beat the location - walk out the door to the main square of Angra. And Angra is a beautiful city. The rooms with the garden view are substantially more expensive than the others, but the view of the municipal garden is great - we don't regret going with that option.

As for the rest it is a standard, adequate, hotel. Clean and (at least the garden rooms) quiet. Helpful staff. Apparently you have to pay for wifi - I don't know for certain because it was "broken" on the two nights we were there with no fix date specified. The web site still claimed wi-fi, so check if you need it. The business center computers are hard-wired in, so they work, but at E3 per 15 minutes fee. The Pasteleria Central, across from the palace, has free wifi for customers.

The view from room was best thing about this hotel. A lovely little botanic garden and very quiet at night of course.
The pillows were small and very lumpy.
There is a terrace bar area which wasn't always open. One evening we did finally manage to get a drink there (it took some time for a member of staff to appear despite phone calls to reception)and we enjoyed it for two minutes before it started to rain and we had to go back to our rooms. Service was fine in the ground floor bar.
We were part of a group holidayand had meals at this hotel. The evening buffet was basic and breakfast was unexciting.

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking gardens.

Good location, room with garden view. Good buffet breakfast. Would not recommend evening meals, bar/waiting staff lacked certain skills (for example, did not seem familiar with wine list). We had to eat in the bar each (of 2) night as they had a meeting/course in the restaurant.

Room Tip: Rooms with garden view have no passing traffic and are therefore quiet.

We were here for 2 nights and the best thing about the hotel was the location! Being in the heart of the town, with access to so many cafes, restaurants and shopping was a plus! The waterfront is only a short walk away. We had a beautiful view of the gardens, but you can only access the Angra garden from the main street. No access from the hotel.
The room was a decent size for 2 girls. Beds were typically European stiff with lumpy pillows but the shower's water pressure made up for it! Wow, great shower!
Indoor pool was a turn off, because you had to buy a swimmers cap to use. Amazing views from the roof top terrace on the 4th floor. Buffet breakfast and dinner had a nice sampling of local food. The wifi was free from the lobby bar (bonus)!

We stayed here for two nights at the beginning of July 2012. As with most European hotels, the room is much smaller than the typical American room. This was not a big deal since we did not spend much time in our room. The beds were much lower than American beds since there is no 'mattress top' as are common in American homes. Again, not a deal breaker, just always give me pause when I first walk into the room. Something typical Azorean was the very firm mattress. I was a little worried, but my back felt great the next morning, so I'll give it two thumbs up.
We had a room facing the garden which was beautiful and relaxing, although dark when the window shade was drawn. The bed and bathroom looked/smelled clean, but the carpet needed another run of the vacuum.
The best part was the location. It's in one of the main squares and a two minute walk from the harbor and beach. '
Breakfast was the typical continental fare. As my mother said 'it'll keep you alive.' For some odd reason they also had the smallest water/juice glasses I've ever seen. It took me 3 trips just to have 8oz of water with my breakfast.
Overall, I'd stay here again for the excellent location.

Room Tip: Get a room facing the garden in the back of the hotel
