We stopped here for Sunday lunch after visiting the University. My husband asked for a small grilled steak which was cooked perfectly and served with a selection of vegetables. I just had a soup which was yummy. Before the meal we were served prosciutto, cheese and a basket of wonderful, warm bread. Frommer's says "Out of a lacklustre lot, this tavern ranks at the top of the independent eateries of this University City" giving the reader the impression that it only stands out in a weak playing field. In fact it was one of our best meals in a week so far in Portugal, and not very expensive.

What seemed like the owner came out to greet us, seeing that we were a bit hesitant. She made us feel welcome, then disappeared. We were brought out wonderful hard-crusted rye-type bread and a plate of prosciutto, a chunk of wonderful cheese and a bowl of olives. Everything was obviously of the top quality, so we didn't care that there is a charge for all these tidbits. The owner returned with menus and explanations of the food. We ordered a goat dish and an octopus. When they served the entres, they served the food at the table. Since we were both tasting each other's entre, one waiter placed a piece on each of our plates, letting us direct him as to how much oil or juice we wanted on top. Then another waiter followed, with a lazy-susan-type contraption in his hands -- containing all the different side dishes. We could choose what and how much we wanted. Greens, young potatoes, peeled and unpeeled, roasted peppers, grilled onion chunks, rice. It was perfect. You could taste lots of different flavors without wasting food. It was simply prepared on an open fire -- Portuguese cuisine. Yum! Dessert was also some kind of typical concoction. One was like a bread pudding, the other softer texture. Both were excellent. Then they served my husband an eau de vie! He was happy, I just smelled it and got high. The meal was simple, elegant and delicious!

We had mushrooms with garlic & parsley as apetizer, grilled polvo and baby kid. One could not decide which was better. Would visit again if in a town.

The Taberna restaurant in my opinion is possibly the second or third best eatery in Coimbra.
I've explored all most very restaurant in town. The food is top quality, fresh, and well served.
If you're looking for basic portuguese dishes, this is the place with regional foods.
Locating the place is not easy for an out- of- towner, use a taxi. Many of the customers are
professional people from the University or business community.

We were 6, booked in advance and mentioned that was lamb for 6.
The lamb was literally bones, with very few meat. Each person got 4 or 5 small pieces... I would say there was no more than 50gr of meat after stripping the bones out.
All family went away with a felling of not coming back again. I confronted the owner of the restaurant that ironically said that the lamb was "a bit skinny, and that's why he served more than usuall". Well, with this, presentation done and last time I will be there ever.
I'm a local and there are WAY better places to eat portuguese food with better service for this price tag.
Will NOT come back.
