This is a modern hotel with good facilities. Unlike some reviewers, we didn't find the 15 minute walk to the old town a problem and we found plenty of decent restaurants. It is an easy walk back along the river. The room was comfortable and had everything we needed.

This hotel has hooked up with the Fado Centre in Coimbra and so we had a thoroughly enjoyable Friday night's entertainment in the bar. It's a great arrangement that provides guest entertainment, while raising the profile of the Fado tradition. Well done to the management for arranging it. We went to the Fado Centre the following day and had a good discussion with one of the musicians. They were very appreciative of the platform the hotel provides for them to promote their art.

The staff are very helpful and gave us good information, which helped us to quickly locate the key areas of the city. This is a good base from which to enjoy Coimbra and I'm happy to recommend it.

We stayed as a family of four for 4 nights in August 2014.
We arrived well after the booking in time but the room wasn't ready and had to wait for over an hour before we could finally go to the room. After some heavy prompting we were offered some complementary drinks. We booked a family suite and were underwhelmed by the room itself. Adequate but the view is the blank wall of the adjacent hotel and must be one of the few rooms with no balcony. Weren't planning to spend too much time in room so not too bothered.
Staff in hotel are pleasant enough but the hotel is seriously under-staffed and as result the service is terrible. The queues at reception are pretty much always there at any time and on one occasion it took over 1/2 hour to just get a parking ticket validated. Everything has to be done at reception so even to get pool towels you have to queue. In order to get drinks at the bar you have to chase the staff out of the restaurant as the bar is not permanently manned. The service by the pool is terrible and staffed by what looks like a school leaver, who whilst pleasant, is totally snowed under by the work. At times, she also appears to be staffing the indoor bar at the same time.
Our bedroom never got cleaned one day and there was no explanation for this.
There are also problems with the hotel itself. The car park is a good example of how not to design a car park and 5 point turns are required just to get out! It's an insult to charge clients 7.5 euros for such poor facility,
The hotel was full in August but the number of sun beads near the pool was artificially kept low causing people to battle for one. Plenty of space available so no reason for this. The pool area is a good facility so it's a shame that it's spoilt by bad service and bad management.
Food quality is good (if you can get it) but overpriced to match the four start rating.
There aren't many options of restaurants nearby that you can walk to so it felt as if we were stuck in the hotel at times.

In a country suffering from high unemployment my advice to management is to increase the number of staff in the hotel.

The property is not in the center but about one kilometer from Coimbra center located in a quiet neighborhood. Satisfactory bedroom and good breakfast. WiFi is free in public areas. Purchased WiFi service in the room is not guarranteed. I was told that WiFi cannot be reached in rooms nearby the elevator. Coimbra is worth while being visted - the old university halls including the library, the nice main street, the FADO music in a club and Coimbra city view seen from the opposite bank at the St Clara monastry garden and from the Forum shopping mall.

Room Tip: Do not take a room nearby the elevator if you want WiFi service in the room.

I stayed here on a business trip in November 2013. The hotel itself is excellent. Very clean, nice staff, really exceptional food and good services. The only thing I disliked was the neighbourhood. It is located halfway between the Coimbra B trainstation and the inner city but both are quite a walk.

As a family, they recommended us to upgrade to a junior suite. They however failed to inform us that they are all facing away from the river and have not been refurbished for ages. Old, worn down and charm-less. Not up to standard

From the moment we met Sara (hope I have right name!) at check-in, the right tone was set - she was so friendly, pleasant and helpful. Hotel is about a 20 min walk to central Coimbra so no hassle with that. Outside pool area really nice. Staff in general very friendly, and in the restaurant for dinner Ana was great. Even used the spa the next morning, for a swim, steam room/sauna. Very refreshing. Thanks to everyone for giving us a very relaxing overnight stay.

We spent two nights there. The first room we were offered was very small and dark. When we complained, we were told it is because we asked for a king bed. The room was changed for us. However, the room was not cleaned the next day until 5 o'clock in the afternoon when again we had to complain to have the room cleaned.
It is a pity, because the hotel is beautiful, new, and in a nice location.

Room Tip: Make sure you receive a room with the river view or with the University (old city view). The rooms o...

Dear guest,

Thank you for your description of our Hotel and its services. We are glad that you have had an enjoyable stay at our Vila Galé Coimbrat. It is true that sometimes we finished cleaning the rooms around 17h. Depends on the numer of rooms occupied and the time that guests leave the rooms. This usually happens only during certain periods. In this and in any hotel, I advise that you inform the front desk when we can clean the room. Help us and the Customer.

best regards,

bernardo ribeiro de mesquita
