I spent a very comfortable night here and was attracted to the hotel initially by its great location, right next to all of the major sites. I was pleasantly surprised to find my room was quite large with very high ceilings and windows overlooking the old town and the university. It was quite quiet at night and I slept very comfortably.

The bar area was very nice with comfortable chairs and a strong wifi signal which allowed me to relax and plan my sightseeing. The breakfast was included in the room rate and was only OK, certainly not bad but nothing to get overly excited about either.

All in all a great spot to use as a home base while exploring the charming town of Coimbra.

Coimbra was an add on to a cruise up the Douro. The city was a total surprise. It was full of interest and history, including a magnificent University. Truly a great place While we were there it was awarded UNESCO status so maybe that will increase trade and permit much needed investment. Prices in the city seemed to be significantly lower than Lisbon or Porto and several restaurant and bar owners said they were struggling. I hope things get better, it should be a tourist magnet. This is not a political review, but they need a cheaper currency and they will fly.

The Astoria was clearly once a splendid hotel. It is a handsome building overlooking the river but only a minute from the main square. It has no restaurant other than to provide a very un-inspiring breakfast, however nearby streets are full of good value restaurants. We found one that offered 4 courses wine and coffee for 9 Euros, amazing value and OK quality.

The hotel appears to have all of its original art-deco features although some renovation would have helped. There is a tremendous atmosphere and potential about the place. The room was spacious as was the bathroom. The towels were a bit tatty and one of our sheets had a torn corner . The balcony was nice, but the modern French Doors were broken at one side and would not open. The the other side would only half open because at 6ft 2ins I could nowhere near reach the catch. The girl from reception, who was particularly nice and helpful throughout risked her life to reach it but failed! This door had clearly been broken for a long time. Does nobody check these things! Do hotels not carry maintenance staff? Do guests not point out such things to help the hotels improve? As usual these days the air conditioning was noisy. The beds were very creaky and the dividing walls transmitted a lot of noise.

Overall the hotels detailed problems were off set by the excellent situation. It must be the best positioned hotel in Coimbra, a city that is well worth visiting.

Room Tip: You must ask for a river view.

The location is the very best in the city. But the hotel needs a lot of work, as it is run down. But the breakfast was good, the staff was helpful, and the river view was very good. Parking was a challenge.

Pros: The hotel exterior is attractive and it's location is very good being in the heart of the historic city and close to the University. Our room view of the city and university on top of the hill was very good.
Cons: The hotel staff was unfriendly. The room was shabby and smelled like someone had thrown up in the room. Leaving the windows open helped but the smell returned when we closed the windows. The bed was hard as a rock and our joints hurt in the morning. Parking for the hotel is in a public lot across the street by the river and is full most of the time even though it has a fee to park.

Our experience at the hotel was OK because of the great location.

Room Tip: Ask for upper floors facing the city to reduce the noise and have a great view of the University bui...

I stayed in this centrally located hotel for 2 nights in May. This hotel has definitely seen better days. Although the room was very large and had all the basic amenities of a hotel, it just felt very old and in need of some "TLC". The musty smell upon entering the guest room was also a turn-off for me.

However, I don't think there is a better location to stay in, to explore the center of Coimbra. So it was a trade-off for me, location vs. comfort. Location won in this case.

The grandeur has faded somewhat - carpets are tatty, the floorboards creak and the bathrooms are really dated, but this place has oodles of charm. I love it!
It's a beautiful building, with original fixtures still retained, and the high ceilings and gorgeous night-time views of the river are just joyful. Beds are comfortable and made up in crisp white linen. Breakfast is Full-English and elegantly served in the wood-panelled dining room.
Staying there is a delightful alternative to the bland corporate chains - treat yourself to some old-world style!

Room Tip: I prefer the rooms overlooking the river.

This hotel is a lovely building, the ground floor is like you have just gone back in time 100 years, the old lift will pull down benches is certainly an eye opener. Decor downstairs...beautiful, however the rooms really need updating and having no bar for an evening night cap was a big downer, breakfast was ok. very centrally located and ok views of Coimbra
