“Great atmosphere”
Reviewed 28 May 2013

Can't comment on food as we didn't eat, but great atmosphere and wonderful setting for fado.
The building was originally part of the church next door, and the vaulted ceiling makes for great acoustics. A special place

“Unforgetable !!!”
Reviewed 28 April 2013

We went with family there and the special sandwich was great. The tapas also. The service was perfect. And at the end the coffe was great. This is an old cafe with more than 90 years... However the place is more than 500 years. Very beautifull.

“Not for the Food, but the Fado”
Reviewed 24 April 2013

I know nothing at all about the food here, but the Fado on the night we attended was very pleasant. As everyone says, the ambiance in this cafe is special, for you are in an old gothic chapel--though brightly lighted, and the ceiling mostly painted white--with groin vaulting, creatures like gargoyles here and there, and so on. It looks absolutely smashing.

If you're interested in Fado, don't miss the performance earlier in the evening at 'Fado ao Central,' which begins at 6:00pm and makes a perfect introduction to the Fado of Coimbra. The performances at the Cafe Santa Cruz are much later, beginning at 10:15 or so.

“Chose the wrong night!”
Reviewed 28 March 2013

We went here to listen to some fado. Sat in there in anticipation, sipping our drinks (which were very reasonably priced) and admiring the inside of the cafe. Then these very old men arrived and started to play. Well, the guitar playing was OK but oh dear the singing was just diabolical. They were flat, one of the men had no voice left - just a quaver. We were with some local residents who could not believe how awful it was and assured us we had just picked the wrong night. For those who do not know fado it is all about unrequited love, passion and protest - this was NOT that - it was a farce
