“A Unique experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 September 2013

This main public rooms of this hotel are beautiful . It has been extended over the years and we stayed in a room with a view of the garden. The room was very comfortable. The garden is amazing - huge selection of majestic trees in a romantic setting - very well maintained.
The hotel is outside the town - but has views over to the universities on the hill.
We tried the buffet by the pool at lunch time and it was very disappointing. The main restaurant is open in the evening and the food and service here are excellent - I just felt that it was a shame that we were in such an ordinary corridor type of room when the house has some amazing rooms - but that is just my opinion - the food combinations were very good and it was a nice treat (bit expensive)

The hotel is set in a beautiful old castello going back to the 1700. It has been in the same family since 1700 but now it is a 4 star hotel.
Coimbra is a university town rich in history. The staff at Quinta das Lagrimas are delightful and very helpful.
We stayed for two nights in a junior suite in the old house. There are rooms in a new sections as well. It is amazing what they have done with an old building introducing modern services. It all seems to work. The room was quite large and the bathroom equally large.

The hotel has two swimming pools (indoor and outdoor). There is a spa, wet and dry sauna and excellent gym.
The hotel has two restaurants Aqua and Arcadas. The latter is regarded as one of the finest dining experiences in Portugal. We had a delightful dinner at Arcadas. The setting on the terrace in the Autum evining was magic.
The food and wine were wonderful but this is fine dining so be prepared to pay for the experience.
The manager helped us with selecting other restaurants in Coimbra and Lisbon.
The menu is not extensive but sensational!

Room Tip: Ask for a room or suite in the old house.

Hotel placing in a good are, on the opposite side from central part. Room big, with window to garden. Garden is amazing, nice to walk between big trees. Service is very good. Restaurant very expensive. Much better to eat in the good restaurant Piscina do Mondego.

Room Tip: Ask rooms with window to garden

The hotel is located in the middle of a large romantic garden, far from the city noise. It includes some historical spots like the meeting place of Pedro and Ines. The rooms are very big and they are nicely decorated in a palace style. Pool is very nice. Staff friendly. The only regret was that we could not remain for longer!

Quinta Das Lagrimas is centrally located in Coimbra which is one of the most historically important cities in Portugal. A tour is a "must do".
It is the history, the palatial rooms, and the incredible gardens make this hotel one of the finest and unique places you will experience. The typical amenities of a luxury hotel are all present including an excellent swimming pool, spa, dining room, and cocktail bar. But the special quality of this hotel is the character that captivates you when you wander through the many hallways and find the palatial furniture, paintings, the chapel, the library, and many other rooms that gives this hotel so much personality. The gardens are an all-day walking event if you study the history behind the tragedy of the romance of Pedro and Ines for which Quinta das Lagrimas is named (Villa of Tears) and also see the two sequoias planted by the Duke of Wellington after his defeat of Napoleon's invasion of Portugal. Start your day with a good breakfast buffet by the pool. Be sure to end the day with a two-hour dinner in the outside patio with a menu that will make you want to stay another five days.

Room Tip: Upper Floors overlooking the gardens are preferred.

Very nice ancient property with plenty of facilities such as outdoor and indoor swimming pool, spa and breakfast in the garden. The personnel was very kind and even suggested us a restaurant for the night in the city center which was amazing. The only problem was that there was no Wi-fi in the rooms. There is room for improvement in this sense but overall was a very nice stay. The botanical gardens they have are also very beautiful!

Great property, beautiful grounds and the main building really is a palace. However, our room was in the modern annex, which was uncharming and way too far from the lobby. This was important to us because the only location with wi-fi on the whole property was that smallish lobby. The hotel is not easy to find if you are driving, but some of that was surely my bad planning (no Coimbra street map). I would try the hotel again if in Coimbra, once they get wi-fi in the rooms.

Room Tip: Choose a room in the old palace, not the modern addition.
