Pensao Residencial Antunes

Residencial Antunes is the best choice for who wants to know a little of portuguese culture and to feel welcoming through excellente friendly employees. The rooms are confortable and clean, with internet wifi and tv. The wood smells like home.

Furthermore, the pension have a very good localization only 4 minutes walking of University of Coimbra and Historic Centre, Botanic Garden, Praça da República (square) with restaurants, bars, theater, public market and some stores. Only 15 minutes walking of Dolce Vita Shopping. Enjoy and have an experience exploring the Alta de Sofia walking in direction of Mondego river, this is a great thing to do and an amazing view to see.

In the rooms of front eventually can have some noise because the proximity of republics of students, but it is not enough to disturb the sleep.

I recommend Residencial Antunes, is a great place to stay.

This is only an option for you, if you choose the hostel part of Antunes, the hotel rooms are not worth the price. It's windy and cold, rooms are worn down (but clean) and I doubt that the single wooden staircase and dark hallways would be approved firesafe in another place.

The Antunes is a clean and friendly guesthouse close to the university. The neighborhood contains stately buildings as well as student housing. The staff was very friendly, although I would not necessarily rely on their restaurant recommendations. The bedroom was clean and of adequate size, though a bit drab. The bathroom was quite small, with the toilet on an odd pedestal that made it hard to navigate. Although one reviewer has criticized the breakfasts, we found the bread to be the best we had in all of Portugal - more like a fresh French baguette than the dense items found in most of the places we stayed in Portugal. And do you really need more than bread, jam and coffee? The price was definitely right - about 40 euros if I remember right. The location, while convenient to the university, was a bit of a schlep to the historic center, and the return walk was all uphill; but you need to get in the habit of walking off those huge Portuguese meals.

We had a very nice dinner at Ze Neto. Our guidebook incorrectly described the service there as "brusque." We found the proprietors very friendly, which was our experience throughout Portugal. In this connection, a few words of Portuguese go a long way toward ensuring a friendly reception. The desserts were particularly mouth-watering.

We choosed Pensao Residencial Antunes taking it from our well-known turist guide, where it was indicated like "small, nice and creaking pensao, family managment, reasonable price".

So, it was exactly that way: we were given a second floor room, and the wooden stairs (no elevator) were a problem with all our bags. But the room was ok: not recent, but clean, with a small bathroom and a small shower. Essential items in it, but we were not looking for them with our reservation.

The location is exactly as described by last reviewers.. and the parking is just a small court in the front of the hotel, with space for a maximum of 10 cars. University is 10 minutes walking, but on a very hilly road.. Downtown is far, 30 minutes walking.. but it worth the walking time..

Breakfast was essential, served in a small room, but in a family atmosphere.. we enjoyed it talking with other customers in what seemed a all-day common situation.

Problems? Very few.. floor wood creaking (but not as figured by the guide), some noise from the street.. nothing really important, for what was a nice stay in a friendly and family hotel. If you are young, and don't care to walk in the city, this is a place to be considered.

The location is near the university and some decent bars and restaurants populated with students. If I had to do it again I probably would have stayed in the Ibis hotel in Coimbra, as it is on the river front and the same price. The breakfast at Antunes was a roll and coffee, which was significantly less than we got at comparable other locations in Portugal. The shower stall was tiny. I would recommend spending some extra Euros on a different place. The main advantage to Antunes was the free parking, but it is limited. As the other reviewer said, it is practical, which is true, but I think you could do better in Coimbra.

If not pushed off by a little climbing, then great views await you at Residencial Antunes in Coimbra, like the old University and a Roman Aqueduct backed by a Botanical Garden, while around the corner, Pope John Paul II is ready to greet you with his bronze arms wide open whenever you head for the nearby Republica Square.

I enjoyed room 107: plenty of space with high ceiling, wooden floor and small bathroom, and a cozy backyard outside my window followed by a church. Oldish furniture contributes to the peaceful atmosphere, only disturbed by an elephant walking about upstairs accompanied by a loud TV. Antonio and George at the reception desk know all the answers, and the prices they charge are reasonable. Vera, their colleague, sees to it that you start your day with a proper breakfast.
