This hotel is situated in the best location in Cascais. It is just across from the train station, right at the entrance of the old town and right on the sea. It is a beautiful hotel which has maintained it's old world grandeur with a few modern touches added for comfort. We had two rooms (had two kids without and the suite was not available.) One room was sea front with a large bed and great balcony. It was perfect and roomy. The other room was street facing, smaller with two beds pushed together and a bit noisy in the late evening and early AM. I highly recommend a sea front room! The service is quite simply perfect! It is perfectly elegant with a casual family friendly welcome. The restaurant is beautifully appointed and accepting of children, as is all of Portugal! The food is highly rated and beautifully presented. The pool area is a nice oasis overlooking the beach front. Service poolside is wonderful. While lounging one afternoon, the staff came by with wonderfully chilled fruit kebabs. The clientele is mostly European and friendly. Cascais is conveniently located about 25 minutes by train from Lisbon. It is a great option to staying in Lisbon. A small, quaint village in which to relax after a day in the city. The hotel is the most perfect choice of any in Cascais!

Room Tip: Sea front rooms with balcony

I agree with Maurice H's comments written below having stayed 3 nights at The Albatroz this year in May. The hotel boasts a superb location being on the seafront and within walking distance but it seriously requires a refurb. Maurice is correct - the website is deceiving. The cracks, chipped paint and rust stains certainly do not make it a 5-star hotel. In fact, the rusty little trolley in the bathroom for toiletries was the kind of thing one would find on a dump - it was disgraceful and very cheap! It certainly does not justify the high prices charged and I would not consider it again.

If you like small, quiet hotels with genteel atmosphere this should fit the bill. Beautiful cool room and spacious balcony overlooking the small pool and bay. Each room provided with beach towels and basket to allow you to go to the beach which is right beside the hotel. Well priced pool bar with good food. Great ice cream shop near by. Worst part of hol was finding decent places to eat in Cascais.

Room Tip: get a front room with balcony

My wife and I last visited Cascais and the Albatroz some 25 years ago. Of course like everything else both the town and the hotel have changed considerably during that time but both have retained a certain charm. To be honest we have stayed at some better 5 star hotels during the past 25 years (and some worse ones!) but we were pleased to find the Albatroz has maintained a high standard and I disagree with one of the earlier reports about the condition of some aspects. Yes the pool is small in keeping with the hotel itself and not in the category of a resort hotel, but as they say, it's perfectly formed and more than adequate for cooling down. Cascais has many fine beeches if proper swimming and exercise is your thing. The sun deck area gets plenty of shade as well which can be a real bonus in temperatures of 40deg which we had today (early July). The small cove below the hotel can get busy at times, mostly at weekends with the locals but this is not an adults only hotel and some noise is to be expected from children playing. We did not find it a concern and never at night and it even gave us some interest at times watching the local toddler class run in and out (it's a pity children in England can't enjoy such an outdoor healthy life). The hotel is perfectly situated on the edge of the town centre and with numerous restaurants and shops only 3 min walk away. We can't vouch for the restaurant as we always try local establishments but the buffet breakfast was more than adequate with plenty of choice and freshly cooked eggs etc on request.

Lisbon is about 25min by train which run about every 20min. Sinatra takes about 40min by regular bus.

If you align your expectations with the photos displayed on the website you will be certain to be disappointed. While everything is physically there according to the pictures you cannot see the cracks, chipped paint and rust stains which abound. The pool (more an over-sized tub) and the pool area are very small and many of the pool chairs have long ago passed their use-by date. The pool overlooks a public beach which is regularly overrun with hordes of screaming school children during the day and rowdy drunken teenagers at night. You'll only need to bring one book since you'll be reading and re-reading the same line over and over again.

The "garden" is nothing more than a patch of grass intersected by the entrance drive of an adjacent private villa.

Despite the fact that we booked our 8 day stay months in advance and a personal call I made to reception to ensure that we got a nice "superior room with sea view" we we given a room on the ground floor directly on the pool area. While we did indeed have a sea view the people lying at the pool had an even better view directly into our room. We lived with the curtains drawn, in darkness, for the first two days until we were moved to a higher floor. After a bit of "negotiation" I was given a token discount. No apology was offered and no one enquired as to our general satisfaction.

This place has about as much elegance as a Marks & Spensers. We were very disappointed indeed. There are far nicer establishments in Cascais and neighboring Estoril for about the same money. If you still decide to go at least be certain to specifiy "NO GROUND FLOOR ROOM" on your reservation.

I have been staying at HOTEL ALBATROZ, CASCAIS, PORTUGAL for some 18 years now; if paradise has been lost in our busy chaotic world of today, this is where one regains PARADISE. Just returned from few days stay to de- stress myself, after family crisis. Albatroz DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Stunning, heavenly location, beautiful rooms. Sophisticated, but inviting elegance. As for sitting in the Albatroz Restaurant, overlooking the blue seas and beach, listening to the waves splashing the rocks, watching the surfs and suds roll onto and off the soft sandy beach; what privilege and pleasure! The food is so fresh and picturesque one almost wants to place it on one's face and body as Monet art work. So flavourful and satisfying too. The friendliest restaurant staff anywhere in the world, and I am an extensive world traveller. Simply, Hotel Albatroz; paradise regained! See you soon.

Room Tip: The balcony, sea- view rooms for me, are the best. Sitting on the balcony, or with open balcony door...

I was here for a meeting: spent four days in a lovely room in the annex to the hotel, an old palazzo that has been thoughtfully and elegantly restored. The meeting rooms are well-maintained and equipped, the staff solicitous, and the amenities with regard to the restaurant as well as to coffee breaks are handled well. The restaurant itself has a varied and excellent menu and service. The swimming pool on the premises is outdoors and a bit on the small side. But i was here for a meeting and not to swim in a hotel pool. Definitely would recommend this for future meetings.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the third floor of the annex...these are large, airy rooms, with spacious balconie...
