“Very good value, but slow staff...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 June 2011

Got a bargain deal at yeego.com incl. breakfast and compared with other hotels in Cascais, it was an outstanding price. Hotel itself is really ok. We´re not talking Sheraton here, but its very clean. Room is perhaps old fashioned, but still functionable and just as clean as the rest of the hotel. Got a fabulous view over the city and the sea, which was great waking up to. Pool area was wonderful and the poolbar too. Breakfast has everything you might need. Its a 7-8 minute walk from the city square, but that might be needed after being out having heavy dinners etc. So whats not so good about this place? Its staff! The guy at the poolbar was great and so were the maids. But the guys at the reception are so slow in understaing good service. Since we were missing the refrigerator that was supposed to be there, we asked for one. They told us they were gonna fix it at once. Nothing happened. Asked 3 times. Nothing happened. So we gave up...Another member of staff that does not understand good service is the man in the main bar. Unfriendly character... Would we come back though? Yes! For the price paid, its a must!

The Citadela was our last choice but it was the week of 1st May we didn't have much of a choice. We paid euro 120 and for that price we didn't expect the spartan beds and thin pillows. Worst of all the room was stuffy and smelt stale. Thankfully we had a balcony and could leave it open but the noise from the street made it annoying as we were supposed to be on one of the best beaches in Portugal!
The light on the lift landing was out and dark and we made an effort to inform the reception and upon returning around 11pm, found that nothing had been done to change the bulb or ensure that the lift landing was lighted!
We were disappointed that the staff in general, wore a mask of dis-interest and at breakfast when we asked for our table to be set, we were told to "wait a minute"... We asked because we didn't want to be impolite to do the work of the waiter but after having asked twice, and 15 minutes later, hungry, we helped ourselves...
We certainly do not recommend this hotel ~ not at Euro 120 as it qualifies for a back-packer, budget type of accomodations. The hotel seriously needs a renovation both in infrasturcture and staff service attitudes.

Room Tip: There does not seem to be good rooms.

Edfen, Prospective Owner at Hotel Cidadela, responded to this review, 29 May 2011
I have been carefully observing the operation of this hotel for the past several months on a daily basis. The Cidadela often described as dated has excelled in my opinion in capitalising on its maturity and charm and this has applied considerably to the exceptional staff.
Not for one moment would the hotel in what I have witnessed in a critical form qualify for a negative report as described .On the contrary in my opinion it is undergoing a consistent renaissance as will be seen from the previous reports.
The restaurant is a generous 100 seat inviting eatery probably one of the best of its example in space and service level and to be seated at a prepared place would be instantaneous, with no waiting.I would have been present at the time described when the hotel was comfortably 70% occupied .I never witnessed anyone having to wait for a table as would easily be seen to be the case with 100 seats available excluding the adjacent overflow with a further 50 seats. The atmosphere during the first week of May was a happy enjoyable one ,healthy activity with a quiet efficient and friendly management by the experienced staff.
The large landings [incidentally with huge windows with illumination from outside in addition] like in many hotel establishments are energy switch sense controlled and not one landing has been allowed to have non functioning lights.
All bedding is of the highest quality, top end mattresses and pillows for example with pure cotton cover and 100% polyester filling supplied by well known professional proprietary hotel suppliers .No complaints have ever been received in this regard.
The hotel has no rooms opening onto a street. In fact the nearest main rd that the hotel overlooks with the sea beyond is interfaced with the large swimming pool and lush tropical garden with furthermore pine and then a colonnade of oak trees before the road.
No room is rented without having full housekeeping and check that all airconditioning and services are fully functioning.Cidadela prides itself on a head house keeper of 30 years plus experience and a deputy for each of the 4 bedroom floors in addition to a 2 person chambermaid team per floor .
No complaints were registered with the hotel.

Just a short walk from the beach and all the restaurants, this hotel could not have been better. Paid 50 euros for a double ensuite room with a balcony overlooking the sea. Whilst the hotel was built in the 1960s, this seemed to add to its charm. Plenty of choice for breakfast, minibar in the room, comfortable beds and helpful staff.
We slept with the balcony doors open, but this could be a little noisy with the traffic. However the rooms do have aircon and the doors shut out the noise completely.

Having been to Oz and several other places in 2010 we were on a budget hence we booked this three star hotel and expected it to be very basic and run down having read the reviews. I thought it definitely should have been a 4 star. We had twin sinks, soap dispencer all the ususal complimentary toiletries. Lovely view from our veranda. Not only were towels supplied but most days a young man brought them to our loungers and directed the sun shade where we wanted it. Upon request they supplied a kettle and cups etc: we supplied out own tea, coffe etc: but this was such a bonus drinking coffee on our verranda with a cake from the local bakery. Carpets were all new and fresh. Sheets/towels were changed daily . I could find absolutely nothing to complain about. Our return flight was canelled due to A French air strike and we were accommadated in the Sheriton. The view from our room with no balcony was abysmal and the room was dark and depressing. Obviously 5 star treatment but I preferred the cidadela, I cannot recomend it enough..

Very tired and shabby hotel. Carpet needs to see a Dyson, bed had stained mattress and broken head board. Colour of bath water was quite disturbing - my 3 year old asked if it was nectarine juice...

Saying that, the pool was pleasant, the receptionist was helpful and we all had an excellent night's sleep.

The hotel is much better than some of the other reviews on this site. The rooms have been updated and the bed linen looks more up to date. There is no coffee or tea making facility in the room, nor are their any cups and saucers. We asked the reception for a kettle and this was placed in our room for the duration of the holiday. This hotel needs to come in line with most which provide this as the norm. They provide you with a locked fridge in the hope you will order some beer and soft drinks at silly hotel prices. What a waste of electricity, and also a source of noise, as we did not use this service.

The breakfasts are superb, and buffet style. There was scrambled egg and boiled eggs every morning. They rotated small hamburger sausages with bacon alongside this. There is the usual tunnel toaster which was very reliable and never stuck. Yogurts, set and in various flavours were available. The drinks are available from a state of the art drinks machine, which has an indicator panel to show the progress of the beverage that is delivered in around 30 seconds. The cappuccino was vile, think it was long-life milk or the like. My wife liked the hot chocolate. I had tea, there are teabags and herbal teas available. There is orange juice with bits available chilled, or chilled water. The orange is superb but beware it does run rather diluted when it begins to run out. There is a daily fruit salad. For the first 4 days of the week we spent there there were melons and pineapple and strawberries, but the last three there were no strawberries available. I liked the dressings they provided for the cooked breakfast, especially the Dijon Mustard. There are cornflakes, chocolate flakes dispensed by a tower mechanism. One of the best breakfasts I have had in a city hotel to date.

The waiters will not speak to you unless you engage them in conversation. They leave clearing the crockery and cutlery you use until you have finished eating. The tables were large so there was no space problem. It was quite revealing as to how much we had tucked into when we finished, and saw a sea of plates and cups etc we had used.

The pool is not heated, but I enjoyed two swims in the near icy water, mind you it always seems like that when you are in a hot climate. It was a little disconcerting to discover on the night before we left that the pool was being used for filming on the day we were leaving. This meant we did not have a access to the pool when we left our room and were passing time before collection to go to the airport, later in the day. The film was an advert for Super Bock Beer. The hotel seemed to be rather empty so perhaps this is the way the hotel supplements its running costs?

We found on arrival that the wi fi would not connect due to a poor signal. I discovered there was a good signal near to the door of our 4th floor room. It worked at treat for the first three days. After this it was making only a local connection to the router. I asked reception to please re-boot the modem and then the router. I was told to wait a while then it may work again. No such luck. I raised this with the Manager who kindly agreed that we could use his PC in his office in the evening. We managed to see our emails, but would have liked to spend more time on the PC in our room. The Manager explained that someone was replacing the cables in the hotel, and he expected the wi fi to be back by the middle of the next week (after we left) Some business men were quite peeved as well, but managed to "hack" into another persons wi fi - by balancing their laptop on a windowsill in the corridor.

There were comfortable chairs and a table in the room. My wife had trouble with the mattresses, which were too hard and made her very stiff in the morning. We do have a memory topper at home, but I had not problems with the mattress, and am prone to sciatica.

Overall the hotel is great and decoration in the corridors and carpeting is very good. The location is excellent, close to a mini market, the fish, veg and clothing market. It is also close to the Post Office, town, large indoor shopping mall, and the railway and bus stations. Reached by a hill, which is not too exhausting, and I have a heart condition and managed it easily, maybe because where I live is hilly? There are no seats in reception but there is a lounge for residents. This has some card tables in it and Portuguese papers which are in a rack bound to some wooden carries.

The reception staff were unable to help with the problems connecting to the WiFi and made the trip very frustrating and expensive on the phone calls as i was unable to use skype for my correspondance.
