“Good Traditional Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 September 2013

Some reviewers have criticized the Cidadela for being old fashioned.I say it is a good traditional Portuguese hotel with international guests and the staff giving a good old fashioned service..The staff are friendly, courteous and professional. We had a spacious room overlooking the rooftops with a view of Cascais Bay.The beach and the old town are situated 10 minutes walk down the hill. For those with walking difficulties there is a bus which runs every 10 minutes which will take you to the town, beach and station. The bus for Sintra also stops outside the hotel.Breakfast is continental with a wide selection plus a small hot selection. The pool is large and is situated in a pleasant garden. There are plenty of sunbeds available in the sun or shade and there is no mad scramble in the morning to secure a bed.A free pool towel is provided each time you visit..All in all an excellent three star hotel and fantastic value. We will be back.

The hotel may be old but our room was perfectly adequate and kept spotlessly clean. It was in a very good location, just a short walk from the town. The pool was large and there were always sunbeds free. Food portions in the pool bar were large and tasty. Breakfast was simple but there was plenty of choice every morning.

I could probably write a book, but to be honest, this hotel doesn't deserve the time! If you are looking for a basic hotel, with minimum input from the staff, then this might be for you.

So here are the main points.....

it's an old hotel
it's an uphill 10/15 minutes walk from the sea front
it's on a very busy road
the free wifi only works on the ground floor
the air conditioning does NOT work - it sounds like it does, but it doesn't
TV channels come and go from day to day - if you ask why, the staff don't care
breakfast is ok and plentiful, but it's always the same - shame about the grumpy waiter
the pool is nice, but it's not heated
there are ants everywhere, especially by the pool
due to the busy road, it's noisy by the pool

Staff are not interested if you have a problem - as other reviewers have mentioned, they say it's a hotel wide problem and they will inform maintenance, but no-one ever follows up. Even when you are checking out they don't ask how your stay was - I get the feeling that they just don't care. I wouldn't stay here again....

Room Tip: if you do decide to stay here, ask for a room on the fourth or fifth floor, at least then you will h...

It was a nice hotel with a view of clear and calm backwaters. Walking distance from train station. So one can travel to Lisbon downtown very economically and conveniently. Trains running almost the whole day and night except for a few hours. Good food. Nice bar. Taxi service was good. Free wi-fi connectivity.

Room Tip: Ask for pool facing suite rooms. You can walk into the pool directly from the backside of the room.

This is our 5th visit to Cidadela and I wouldn't stay anywhere else. last year we were on a strict budget (very strict) and we stayed at the Hotel Da Vila which has now closed. The hotel is orientated towards families, the pool area is great fun and snack bar has Gazpacho to die for. The rooms are aged but immaculately clean and functional. Cascais is a very safe destination where everyone speaks English and help you with Portuguese should you choose to attempt. Antonio and his colleagues try and make your visit pleasurable, and they have always succeeded with us. Sorry for last year, we won't stray again!

Room Tip: All fairly quiet now the Hospital has moved closer to Lisbon

Dear All, I have been here 5 days now with my 6 years old daughter and my husband, together with another family of 2 adults and 2 children. I have never met in my life worse treatment from the staff, completely ignoring from the start.
Although the rooms are very old furnished the bathroom leaking if we were treated other way by the hotel staff we would had except it. We had ants in the room, the telephone was not working, the refrigerator is ancient and leaking and not working under 10 degrees inside.Nothing was fixed after insisting at least 3 days and talking with more than 3 persons....

One detail. We spilled some powder from a shake I brought from home inside of our baggage.
We kindly asked the cleaning lady to help us vacuum the baggage case and gave her money.
After she saw the baggage she assured us that she will clean it properly and thanked for the money. Next day nothing was touched or cleaned. We were to the reception and the staff told us that it was impossible to clean because the powder was fixed on the case. We cleaned it in 10 minutes with a wet towel...and wondered why we dared to ask for help....

I WILL NEVER STAY HERE AND COME WITH MY CHILDREN.

Breakfast is good but very poor in menu. They said is American breakfast but the American famous pancakes were no were seen in any day. I can hardly wait to go home.

If you have an enemy recommend this hotel to them. It will be enough punishment!

Room Tip: Save your money and nerves don't book this hotel

This hotel was a bit old fashioned but it was clean and comfortable. The room was a good size with a balcony looking out to sea over the rooftops of Cascais. Bathroom was a bit dated, but very clean. Breakfast was okay (if you stayed away from the scrambled egg!) and the swimming pool was great, although be aware it is next to a main road so there is some traffic noise from behind the hedge. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk out of Cascais, uphill, which wasn't a problem for us. Really enjoyed our stay and great value for money. Staff were really nice too and wifi is free.

Room Tip: 4th/5th floor if you want the view
