This place is incredible. I loved everything about it. Food was great, room was great and the bed was like a cloud. Everything that you could possibly want to do is within walking distance. We enjoyed a great bike ride up and down the beach.
Perfect.
In case you were wanting a pool, it is not so great. But with beaches all around, who cares.

Just come back from another great trip to Portugal staying at the Cidadela. It simply reinforced my view on just how good a hotel this is for me and how reliable it is. The rooms are great (no, they are not re furbished every year...), bathrooms huge and the views are great from 4th floor up. Alas the trees on the Avenida in frfont have grown just that little bit to give clear views from there - or the sea at least. Breakfast is good, the staff are exceptionally helpful, and the cleaning staff are simply the best you will find anywhere. Impossible to fault, really.
No fitness centre or spa, but an amazing private pool right below, with bar and snacks - a real gem.

Room Tip: Higher you go, the better the view over the town and the Tejo - all the way across to Caparica

My partner and I had booked a weeks stay in a 5th floor room, with sea view via Clever Hotels. Upon arrival at the hotel the front desk staff informed us that the company that booked the hotel went insolvent in August and we should have been informed - we weren't. Due to this our booking had been cancelled.

You can imagine the panic.

The hotel staff were great. They went out of their way to find us a room as there was limited availability in the whole of Cascais. We ended up staying in a one bedroom ground floor apartment for the first four nights (which was fabulous), then had to move to a basic room on the second floor for the remaining three nights.

We found that the staff went out of their way to be helpful, ringing for taxi's when required and even going on google to find us the nearest surf shop!

The hotel itself is old, but is kept very clean and tidy. The pool area is great - always plenty of sun loungers and free towels to use. The pool isn't heated but this is very refreshing on a hot day! It's about an 8 - 10 minute walk to the sea front down a hill and cobbled streets. The breakfast is standard - breads, eggs, bacon/sausages, croissants, fruit, ham, cheese etc, which is suffice to start the day.

All in all we really enjoyed our stay after the initial room scare and would stay again.

Room Tip: Ground floor apartments are great - large bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, lounge/dining room and outside...

Some reviewers have criticized the Cidadela for being old fashioned.I say it is a good traditional Portuguese hotel with international guests and the staff giving a good old fashioned service..The staff are friendly, courteous and professional. We had a spacious room overlooking the rooftops with a view of Cascais Bay.The beach and the old town are situated 10 minutes walk down the hill. For those with walking difficulties there is a bus which runs every 10 minutes which will take you to the town, beach and station. The bus for Sintra also stops outside the hotel.Breakfast is continental with a wide selection plus a small hot selection. The pool is large and is situated in a pleasant garden. There are plenty of sunbeds available in the sun or shade and there is no mad scramble in the morning to secure a bed.A free pool towel is provided each time you visit..All in all an excellent three star hotel and fantastic value. We will be back.

The hotel may be old but our room was perfectly adequate and kept spotlessly clean. It was in a very good location, just a short walk from the town. The pool was large and there were always sunbeds free. Food portions in the pool bar were large and tasty. Breakfast was simple but there was plenty of choice every morning.

I could probably write a book, but to be honest, this hotel doesn't deserve the time! If you are looking for a basic hotel, with minimum input from the staff, then this might be for you.

So here are the main points.....

it's an old hotel
it's an uphill 10/15 minutes walk from the sea front
it's on a very busy road
the free wifi only works on the ground floor
the air conditioning does NOT work - it sounds like it does, but it doesn't
TV channels come and go from day to day - if you ask why, the staff don't care
breakfast is ok and plentiful, but it's always the same - shame about the grumpy waiter
the pool is nice, but it's not heated
there are ants everywhere, especially by the pool
due to the busy road, it's noisy by the pool

Staff are not interested if you have a problem - as other reviewers have mentioned, they say it's a hotel wide problem and they will inform maintenance, but no-one ever follows up. Even when you are checking out they don't ask how your stay was - I get the feeling that they just don't care. I wouldn't stay here again....

Room Tip: if you do decide to stay here, ask for a room on the fourth or fifth floor, at least then you will h...

It was a nice hotel with a view of clear and calm backwaters. Walking distance from train station. So one can travel to Lisbon downtown very economically and conveniently. Trains running almost the whole day and night except for a few hours. Good food. Nice bar. Taxi service was good. Free wi-fi connectivity.

Room Tip: Ask for pool facing suite rooms. You can walk into the pool directly from the backside of the room.
