Stayed Vila Gale in Cascais 11-14 May. We had booked a room on the top floor and were given the second floor because a group had booked in!! Breakfast was cold every morning despite a complaint to the manager. One of the days we had to ask 3 times for our room to be made up. In the end the manager refunded 50% of our money apart from the charge for internet.but the stay was spoilt. As ever Cascais was vibrant, Next time will go back to the Baia

Stayed for 2 nights with 3 friends. We had 2 twin rooms on the top floor with a wonderful view of the sea.

The rooms were fine with a nice relaxing balcony. The breakfast was good but unfortunately the food in the evening was almost cold even though we arrived early. If we returned we definitely would not book half board again as there were nice restaurants close by.

The pool area. Is lovely and even in May the water was warm for swimming.

Room Tip: High room with sea view

The view of the Atlantic was breathtaking and the rooms were very spacious and luxurious. They also had the best breakfast buffet I've tried in a long time. The pool was very relaxing and comfortable with great coctails at the bar. The service was phenomenal all around and everyone was very eager to please. The other facilities were also very good but pricey.
However there are numerous problems. The hotel is aging and it shows quite clearly. The beds and couches are uncomfortable and noisy, the carpets seem very used although well mantained. The balconies and windows have gathered decades of sea breeze salt. The clientele was mainly over 60+ which is both good (polite, quiet) and bad (hard to make friends). The Wi-Fi was €5/day, required a password every time you reconnect and it dropped quite regurarly. The location is also a bit difficult without a car, you'll have to walk a mile to reach anything of interest.

Room Tip: Suites have a very narrow, walled in balcony but are nicely isolated. Higher floor = better view of...

Overview
This turned out to be a great week in Lisbon area (April 2014). Cascais is a delightful area. Reserved a week as RCI timeshare exchange as base to tour Lisbon area. Not a conventional time share resort but a combination hotel and TS much like Hawaii beaches or some other Euro resorts. Reading reviews the location appeared good, however we were concerned of property and unit size. Concerns were needless. First time in Portugal. We found people and culture extremely friendly. All considered it was a very good stay and we plan on returning in future. In April, bring some cooler weather gear as some nights and days we needed it.
Pros
Great location & base for touring. Ocean view from room terrace and of hotel garden/pool. 15 min walk or 5 Euro taxi ride (with tip) to train station for easy ride to various touring stops in Lisbon. 20 minute drive to Sintra, which is a must for two days of touring sites. 1.5 hr drive to Fatima. 2 hr drive to Evora. Cascais is an upscale seaside community and very cute business area. Plenty of restaurants and shopping. Great Indian and seafood. Although no car is needed for Cascais or Lisbon, you will need auto to get to hotel, Sintra, and other regional sites. Car park is free and of limited size; but we had no real difficulty finding space. GPS setup with Garmin Basecamp worked great to get to hotel and navigate to other areas.
Hotel staff were great and majority spoke English. Special thanks to Duarte & Mikal at front desk, and Bruno(s) in bar. All were very helpful and courteous for any question or request. Servers in restaurant all courteous and very helpful.
Hotel restaurant was very good and not too pricey. Restaurant is buffet for breakfast & dinner. We were always out for lunch. Breakfast very good selection and quality at fair price. Dinner selection was huge with some limits on entrees. Most often we enjoyed soup, salad or sandwich in bar; buffet dinner was just too much food for every night. Dinners we enjoyed in Cascais were all very good and reasonable for seaside upscale tourist community.
Accommodations were a modern furnished, ocean view, junior suite style of decent size. Fairly comfortable sofa, table & chairs(2), terrace table & chairs(2), kitchen counter area, and bed of double Euro style of 2 adjacent twin beds was reasonably comfortable. Plenty of closet space and areas to unpack. Bath was contemporary and as good as most upscale hotels. Kitchen counter had sink, cooktop, and small fridge. Worked well for morning coffee, brought my own travel REI French Press mug (great), cont bkfst, making sandwiches, etc. Doubt one could prepare a full meal (too small and too few utensils).
TV had CNN, BBC and several local channels with English programming having Portuguese subtitles; but no voice over.
Cons
Limited dislikes; however everything for hotel room is cost adder. WiFi and safe have surcharges that should be inclusive with room. Room Needs utensils for tea, coffee, as well as dish soap & paper towels for kitchen area. Tour bus stop can make for crowds in lobby & rest/bar area. If driving get ready for Portugal tolls; can get pricey to drive on motorways.

Room Tip: Ocean view room a must.

We had a great week long meeting at a reasonable price. Rooms were comfortable, clean and well serviced. Desk staff friendly and helpful, with nice meals from the restaurant. Although obviously a holiday destination, the ability to host working meetings impressed. Hotel is well positioned and within short walking distance of everything in Cascais.

Stayed: March 2014, travelled on business

First time to Cascais and very impressed with the hotel. The hotel was full but there were no queues for breakfast and there was plenty of choice of hot and cold food all very fresh. The rooms are large and very comfortable. Pool area was lovely with plenty of sun loungers, pool towels are provided which is an added bonus when travelling light. I would recommend this hotel and I will go back. Only fault is the charge for Wifi in bedrooms.

Room Tip: Sea view is amazing

The most positive aspects of this hotel are the staff and the location; the staff are very friendly and helpful, the hotel itself is in a great location with sea views and is a short walk away from the town of Cascais. However, I struggled to find anything else that was positive. When we came down for breakfast there was a queue down the corridor of at least thirty people waiting to get a table. Meanwhile there were empty tables in the dining room but there didn't seem to be enough staff to clear them and set them up again. I have never experienced anything like this in a hotel before. The breakfast itself left a lot to be desired, the omelette mixture came out of a carton and most of the breakfast food apart from the fruit (this was lovely and fresh) was of low quality. The coffee was undrinkable. Actually getting any food practically involved a scrum as there were so many people.
The hotel is incredibly dark (everywhere!) it felt depressing and like it was stuck in an 80's time warp.
The sea view room was big(but very dark!) and the bed was comfortable but the bathroom was very small, my husband was too tall to stand upright in the bath to have a shower but with some contortions and adjustments to his head and neck he did manage in the end! The towels were very worn and tiny and they weren't changed very often.
I don't know why the hotel has 4 stars, I don't feel this is a true reflection of the reality. However, it is reasonably priced, just don't expect any kind of luxury in the surroundings or the food and be prepared to queue for your breakfast table!

Room Tip: Choose a sea view room on the 6th floor
