We stayed at the Senhora after two fabulous nights 6 km away at the hotel Fortaleza do Guincho, to which we then returned. The Senhora looks like a hotel, the reception staff were very helpful and even changed our sea-view room - the connecting door to an adjacent room was not sound-proofed enough. But the hotel lacks charm, it is missing the ingredient of a proper hotel where the ambience, the breakfast, the other staff are there to provide a proper experience. It was all very sterile, no cheer. Breakfast after the Fortaleza was mediocre and there was no helpful smile from the sombre staff - made worse by the fact there is an self-playing piano that the waiter programmed to play the first 15 seconds of every song in its repertoire. We were there for New Year and what a sad New Year dinner it was with no joy or celebration. The owner may not come from the hotel business as this looked like an investment exercise, not a hospitality place where repeat business should be the goal. The other reviews looked fabulous so maybe its a question of my experience as a traveller.

Room Tip: Room No 214 with a sea view is probably the best as it is very large and has an excellent bathroom...

Graet hotel with comfortable beds, spacious room, great seaview. You can relax if you want and sunbathe with the pool in lovely environment even with a small child. We spent few days here with our 2 year old boy, and it was perfect. The staff is kind as well. A great restaurant is just on the other side of the road and the Boca do inferno is also really close. I can recommend both for a romancic gateway or for a family with small kids.

This hotel is just outside a couple of miles outside Cascais but you can get a taxi ( for about 5 euros) into the town. We saw dolphins from the restaurant at the hotel so you can't get much better than that. The hotel is very clean and well furnished with large rooms. We had a garden room which was very pleasant. The staff are friendly and helpful. The food is delicious and served in the dining room overlooking the sea.

Room Tip: We had a garden room with a view of the sea.

We have stayed in several “boutique” hotels and still have no idea what that means. There was no thread of commonality except that they were all not “mainstream.” Regardless, we are wrapping up a two week stay here and it has been lovely. It is a 5-Star on Expedia and has all the trappings that such a rating requires: full restaurant, a nice, if small, fitness center, indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, mini-bar, wireless internet, etc. It is not, however, a 5-Star like the ones we’ve stayed in elsewhere in the world. In hotels like Shangri-La’s, Ritz Carlton’s, Westins and Four Seasons, the staff is a highly trained army that goes out of its way to make your stay pleasant. The rooms and facilities at such hotels are arranged and maintained to a level of perfection, that together with lavish service, are designed to make you feel like royalty. Senhora da Guia is not such a hotel. Low-keyed is a good description.

The staff is polite and competent with a certain sangfroid that seems to be common in Portugal. (As opposed to a more passionate approach in most southern European countries.) This fits with the overall quiet nature of the hotel. There are only 41 rooms, so even when the hotel is full, you do not feel like you are in a crowd. The pastel colored buildings of traditional southern European architecture are lovely and well kept. Our room was small and plain, but very nice with a small terrace, comfortable beds and old style furniture. The area around the sea water pool included a large lawn and 2 large palms under which we escaped from the intense Portuguese September sun.

There was, of course, some stereotypical southern land sloppiness and lack of urgency to the management of the hotel. The cleaning staff didn’t always replace things in the rooms, like tissues, and laundry took a while in coming back. Being German, we like when everything works with precision, but all the same appreciate that the world is still okay if it doesn’t. Somehow it is more charming. The most important personnel at the hotel are 2 cats, a mommy mouse catcher and her 6 month old trainee. At the end of 2 weeks they even came when I called. Even our own cats don’t do that.

The breakfast was good, but not of great variety so it got boring after a few days. After many years of living the US, it was a delight to get good coffee at breakfast and the restaurant terrace had a fantastic view of the Atlantic. We never tried the restaurant for lunch or supper, but the menu looked good and many guests did eat there.

We recommend the hotel and would stay here again, but this is not a place for people who want to be entertained. Most Americans we know would be disappointed at the lack of “hyped” things to do like planned activities, parasailing and jet-skiing. This is a “relax and soak up the calm” hotel and the guests were mostly of the “just let me rest” type.

It’s good to have a car as the city is a few km away, but we recommend taking the train into Lisbon. They leave several times an hour from Cascais and greatly reduce the stress of driving and finding parking in the city. The hotel does have bikes for excursions. The excellent Guincho beaches are only a few km away.

Very nice, clean hotel not sure about the 5 star rating. Location is at least 3kms from Cascais in the middle of no-where so there are no restaurants and bars to wander to easily. Hotel lunch menu was limited and staff were less than friendly.
