Finding Cascais was a highlight of a city break to Lisbon. The whitewashed winding streets full of shops and loads of places to eat were a joy to walk round. The square by the coast is great for eating an ice cream and people watching. Some of the old villas by the coast are outstanding and the lighthouse and fishing boats give the place a lovely atmosphere. Despite visiting in peak season it didn't feel too crowded and there was a peace to the backstreets. Well worth a trip if only for the day.
If you want a cheep day by the beach there is a huge Jumbo supermarket on the other side of the train station than the old town ad it sells everything you could need for an amazing picnic.
