“Hotel as nice as the town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 March 2012

First of all, I never would have imagined Portugal to be so beautiful. Cascais was about as good as it gets. As for the hotel, the rooms were big and comfortable. My wife loved the electric shades almost as much as the bathrooms. The staff couldn't not have been nicer or more helpful!!!

A short BEAUTIFUL walk into town only added to our stay.

The only down side to this hotel, pool was not heated and in the beautiful spa, the sauna and steam have been broken for a month. Besides that, if you are in Portugal don't miss this hotel!

We just returned from 5 days at this fabulous hotel, which is part of the Leading Hotels of the World Group and you know why when you are there. From arrival, the staff really can not do enough for you. The entrance is very grand and as soon as you arrive at the front door you can see the wonderful sea views through the back of the hotel. There is a glamourous air about the hotel and whilst you can of course walk around in shorts and tshirts, people did seem relatively smart - the hotel seems to attract quite a lot of locals and business meetings too (the only downside to this was there seemed to be people talking loudly into their mobiles - even poolside, which was not pleasant!).

We had a standard room without sea view, although saying that you could actually see the sea, but the window was very small which was a shame as the weather outside was glorious but whenever we were in the room we had to have the lights on. The room itself was lovely and had everything we needed. They even have a pillow menu and I tried the lavendar pillows which were lovely. You can also borrow a DVD from the library on reception to watch in the room (although this isn't mentioned anywhere so just ask at reception and they have the list) which was a nice idea. Our only complaints about the room were that there was no tea/coffee maker (and to order a cup of tea from room service meant paying an additional 3.50 service charge!) and also the room did not come with an iron. The staff are obvioiusly very happy to bring one, but they don't have an ironing board. And there seems to only be one iron for guests as one day they came and got the iron from us for another guest (although we did get it back).

We were very lucky with the weather for March, it was in the 20's and clear blue sky - but the hotel staff kept apologizing as they weren't prepared for this so they didn't have the pool bar open or pool service - but really there were so many staff around it really didn't take long to get a drink by the pool! The pool was freezing so we couldn't go in, but the loungers were lovely and you could hear the surf crashing from there.

We thought the best bit of the hotel was the terrace - it had fantastic views of the ocean and the surf, lovely music playing (although the hotel could do with investing in some more CDs, after 5 days we heard the same songs over and over - but they were lovely anyway!) and the furniture on the terrace is lovely and comfortable. They even have nice fleecey blankets to use if its a bit chilly or windy (which it can be under an umbrella or later in the day). The food at the terrace bar was great - they had fantastic burgers which we really recommend and some other salads or some tapas too. Great selection of drinks and teas - although not cheap, but what you expect from a hotel of this level. You also get a lovely selection of nuts etc (including saffron coated nuts!) or cookies with your tea which is a nice touch and everything is servced in a wonderful way.

Breakfast was lovely and buffet style, you could sit out by the pool which was nice. It was the usual sort of hotel buffet - we thought the fruit could have been a bit better, it was the same 4 types every day and some times the quality wasn't that great - some more stuff on the healthy end would have been nice although they did have Soya milk and some tofu products which most hotels don't do which is a nice touch for those that want/need but still some more fruit/dried fruit and nuts etc would have been good.

On Sundays they do a huge brunch buffet which looked amazing - unfortunately we had not been informed of this so we went ahead and ordered our regular lunch but we soon noticed there were lots of very smart locals around us eating this buffet so we asked the staff and were told. They were surprised we hadn't been informed and very apologetic. It did look lovely so if you are there on a Sunday you should enquire.

We were a bit disappointed to learn you have to pay to use the spa - even the sauna - we saw a photo of an indoor pool on the website but apparently it isn't an indoor pool - its part of a ''treatment circuit'' which includes the hamman and sauna etc and therefore you have to pay for all of it. If you have a treatment - massage etc - then you can use this area for free but otherwise you must pay, which really I don't think is right once you've already paid to stay in the hotel. The weather outside was so lovely that it didn't bother us, we didn't see much point in staying in the dark in the spa so we gave it a miss.

We ventured into Cascais for a walk, the main centre is quite toursity with Union Jack flags and an Irish pub, we didn't find it very appealing but there are some lovely side streets with lovely little restaurants. There is a really nice walk you can do from the hotel which takes you through the park then you end up in little windy cobbled lanes that lead down to the main part of town - these lanes are lovely and we saw some nice restaurants dotted around. We didn't try them but would recommend this area.

The promenade outside the front of the hotel is lovely - you can walk for miles on it (oppposite direction to Cascais town) and watch the surf crashing up. It gets really busy on Sundays but its a lovely walk. We walked to Casa de Gaia - about 20/30 mins walk - which is a great mansion with shops and stalls set up and loads of lovely restaurants over looking the sea - would really recommend this place.

We want to give a special thanks to Katya at the hotel who really helped my husband after he had an accident with his foot - she went out of here way to be really really wonderful. Overall the staff were fantastic and any small little grips we had above were blown away by just how wonderful they were. On our last day we had to leave at 5am, they set up breakfast for us in reception - we thought we'd have a paper cup with some coffee or something - but they had properly set up a table with 2 chairs and the whole silver service, little sandwiches with their crusts cut off etc etc - it was so lovely and such a nice touch that left us with a wondeful feeling of the hotel.

Room Tip: If you don't mind spending the money, get an ocean view room with a balcony.

Was in Lisbon for a work, and a friend and I decided to spend the weekend as Portugal was having glorious weather. So we headed to Cascais, a small distance from Lisbon. We obtained a nice deal at the Villa Italia.

We got a special rate, sea view room, dinner for two and a relaxing massage.

I arrived at the hotel early in the day. Since the room was not ready I proceeded to the terrace, which over looked the sea. Had a bit of lunch. The steak sandwich was cooked to perfection. I also had a wonderful starter of crab. What a treat.

Then I moved from the table to the sofa on the terrace, and I just spent the day and enjoyed the sun and weather. My friend showed up just as the room was prepared. And we had a wonderful room on the end (512). It was smaller but the view was spactacular. It was just what we needed.

We headed down for dinner. Had a small dinner, and it was wonderful. I had half dozen oysters and a salmon salad.

We slept the first and every night with the balcony door opening listening to the waves and sea.

The next day we had our spa day. I had a 40 minuite crenium and a 60 minute full body relaxation massage. It was perfect. I almost feel asleep during it. And I was so relaxed I almost could not get up. And then I head to the pool. Nothing better than an afternoon of sun.

The next day in the spa, had a full pedicure, what a treat.

The staff and service, are simply what makes this hotel so special. Everyone has a smile, and seems to be happy working. And the staff are always near by for any request no matter how small. Like walking to the pool. I got my stuff laid on the table next to the lounge chair and I saw a staff member bringing me the cushions for the chairs and towels. (Since it was still winter for the region, the chairs were not made up).

The room was kept perfectly cleaning, and even before the end of our second day we were talking about returning. And I must be honest, I am really looking forward to returning to Cascais and the Villa Italia.

We have just returned from a 10 day stay at the Grande Italia. We are a couple with a 10 month old child & just wanted to pen a short note to share our experience with possible visitors! We've being fortunate enough to have stayed in some of the finest hotels in the world. This hotel is unquestionably the best & it's easy to see why it is a member of the leading hotels in the world. The ambience, staff, rooms, restaurant, spa, bar & hotel facilities are all excellent. I would concur with other reviews listed stating that the staff are really superb and they certainly made our stay one to remember! We had a fabulous sea view reteat room with a balcony & magnificent sea views. It's location is superb and it's a nice 10-15 min stroll into Cascais. This was our 2nd visit to Cascais in 6 months and will not be the last. Resort is a tad quiet this time of year but this suited us with our son busy dictating closing time!! Couple of excellent restaurants - O' Poeta in Cascais excellent, The Thai is top notch and Mer Do Inferno (turn right and 5 mins towards Sintra) best for fish & packed with locals. O' Luains Irish Bar in Cascais is superb for music and best pint outside of the Emerald Isle. Also there is a nice bar across road from hotel which is nice for a quiet drink.
A big thank you & well done to all at this fine establishment. Already looking forward to our return visit. Kind regards, Brenda, Niall & Mark

A really nice hotel from the moment you walk up the drive.
My welcome was good & despite some initial confusion everything was sorted & I was shown to our really well furnished, large & attractive room. Facilities in the room were also very good & the bathroom very spacious & well catered.
We only ate in the restaurant the first night & although the food was quite good it was expensive for what it was (especially considering how reasonably priced everywhere n Cascais is), there was no atmosphere & service was slow to the table although service in the bar area after our meal was much better.
Breakfast is one of the best you could find with a very wide selection, everything very fresh & the pastries were top drawer.
The spa wasn't quite up to the standard advertised - although there was nothing wrong with it it didn't have anything to wow you as you might expect from the advertising.

My wife and I have just returned from a week in the Grande Real Villa Italia Hotel in Cascais, near Lisbon. We were very pleased with our time there. Without exception, every member of staff at the hotel was courteous, pleasant, efficient, helpful and friendly. Not only were we made to feel welcome but everyone at all times made it seem like it was a pleasure for them to be of service to us. The hotel itself and the amenities are certainly conducive to wellbeing and relaxation and its location is superb. It was recommended to us by a friend and we will certainly be recommending it to others. We also hope that we will have the pleasure of returning there in the years ahead.

Villa Italia is an exceptional hotel not just for the beauty of its location and its outstanding rooms, but because of the overall experience. My husband and I just stayed there again and had an amazingly special break. This is the only hotel in the world we go back to (outside of business)-we normally enjoy the fun of a new experience but we always want to come back here. We love the Lisbon/Estoril/Sintra coast - the light, the weather, the food, the people.... but Villa Italia adds a further special experience that is hard to find anywhere. This hotel has the balance of 5 star but with a genuine warmth and friendliness you don't often find. We spent Valentine's day there and the special touches the hotel provided -from bringing chocolate covered strawberries, heart shaped cookies through to making a very special table and outstanding dinner. All of the staff, from Joao Roquete, the office manager through to housekeeping went out of their way to make our break a really special one. Thank you Villa Italia for being the hotel experience we should all have. Mr & Mrs White
