“It was worth the hike to the 3rd Floor!!!”
Reviewed 2 July 2012

While we were all about the proximity of the B&B to the sites we want to see in Lisbon, we were also particular about the cleanliness of the B&B itself. We got what we wanted and so much more in the magical, fairy tale rooms of Pensao Royale especially the breakfast area. Paula was a very warm and accomodating host that during the entire duration of our Portugal trip, we returned to stay here a total of 3 times. The place is very close to all modes of transportation that one would need while enjoying the nice places around it which other viewers had mentioned. Thanks Paula and yes, we will be back and so with our family and friends!

All the previous reviews tell the true story of this quirky little B&B.We did our homework on trip advisor and booked for 5 nights and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. The B&B is in an ideal central location,it is very safe and secure, offers an excellent breakfast experience (both food and decor!) and is run by Paola who seems to devote all of her time to running the business and who will go out of her way to ensure you enjoy your stay.Thank you Paola for everything,it was lovely to have met you!

Re the stairs they are a bit daunting when you arrive with your luggage. but as long as you are reasonably fit, and take it slowly, the climb is worth the effort! Traffic noise from a nearby main road can be annoying if you leave the window open at night.

As this was our second visit to Lisbon we took the opportunity to travel further afield by using the trains. We went to Cascais/Estoril from Cais Sodre station,it took about 45 minutes, and you can buy your ticket from the ticket office for less than 10 euros each return. We also visited Sintra from Rossio station, again the journey time and price was about the same. The trains run every 15 minutes and are very prompt and reliable. We thoroughly recommend both trips if you have a couple of days to spare.Cascais/Estoril has many lovely beaches, and Sintra has lovely Palaces.

TIP----If you use the airport bus into Lisbon please note that your ticket is valid for 24 hours. We used ours the next day to travel free on the 28 tram all morning until the ticket expired!

Paula is a great person. She's a perfect person to suggest the best logistic for your time in Lisbon. The guest house is amazing, clean and colorfull. Its in front of the subway and 10 min to Alfana and Bairro Alto...WAS GREAT !!! Ok , you need to go to 3rd floor but, happen the same in Paris, Rome and another cities.
The breakfast is a dream with many options and we can felling at home. We really suggest Pensão Royal and Paula works hard for everything is ok , she has passion for her job!
Thank you Paula !

Perfect location on the edge of Baixa and Chiado. Easily walkable to Bairro Alto. The historic building has not been updated much, so it has that charm. Paula is very willing to chat with guests, and the place is tiny enough that she will address you by name each time she sees you. Only problem was we ran out of hot water one day and I had to take a cold shower.

Pensao Royal might not be everyone's cup of tea but if you are tired of the sameness and often un-intentional soul-less hotel accommodation, this is right up your alley. However, beware there is no lift in the building.
Paula, the owner, is someone who knows her city, a mine of information! The intention of the trip to Lisbon was to chill out, relax and do very little, the chill out and relax bit did happened but we did a lot more than we intended. Every day Paula had the insight to suggest trips to different areas of the city taking into account the weather and how energetic you seemed at the colourful food laden breakfast table.
The appropriate travel cards were suggested making travel on the beautiful old trams (No 28 to the castle) a wonderful way to see to city and avoid the many challenging hills of Lisbon. A day trip to Belem on the No 15 tram was another wonderful day out and sampling the 'pastel de nata' at the cafe Pastel de Belem. It is so easy, you just ask for how many ‘pastel’ you want (3 is a good number). A gastronomic moment for any serious foodie!
Another food moment on this trip was a suggestion from the wonderful Paula, to a restaurant called ‘Restaurante poete na bicha’, Travessa Agua da Flor, Bairro Alto. A dining out experience which hit all the top marks! The food is obviously prepared by a chef who loves his job and the service was excellent.

Great location, within walking distance to key downtown Lisbon locations. Paula is excellent--friendly, spirited, full of good humor--and makes you feel right at home in Portugal, giving great advice on exploring Lisbon. Great breakfast (homemade by Paula) in a comfy room of the Pensao is a fine way to start off each day.

First time in Lisboa and we were made to feel just like at home, thanks to Paula! You certainly made us feel part of the family with your great bakery skills and the tiredless guide and reminders. Touring around Lisboa was made so easy and wonderful by you and of course you helped us save our pockets from burning by recommending the best dining places and tourist spots without overspending too! Rooms were so well decorated and clean with refreshing area for every morning's breakfast, never looked forward so much to having breakfast before! We've started missing you and your place! Endless thank you Paula and we'll be back soon! This is the place to be for visitors to Lisboa! Two thumbs up for Paula and Pensao Royal!

Room Tip: Different rooms are decorated with different themes, our double bed room was so lovely!
