“Outstanding service, magnificent location and a very special atmosphere”
Reviewed 8 November 2011

If we are ever lucky enough to go back to Lisbon from Sydney, Palacete Chafariz D'El Rei will be the only place we will stay. The accommodation is outstanding, comfortable and beautiful with every possible amenity, but it is the service which makes this a stand out. It is the first B&B that I have stayed in where the staff have struck a perfect balance between assistance and privacy.

I am not sure about some of the information in the reviews below, but in addition to the exceptional bedrooms, there are a range of entertainment and sitting areas which are also available to guests. We used these on a number of occasions and were encouraged to do so. Drinks are available and the staff are more than willing to assist with these.

The B&B is magnificently decorated and the owners have been loyal to the original design.

The location on the edge of the Alfama is perfect and completely safe. The B&B is surrounded by fabulous restaurants in every price range.

We have stayed in four and five star hotels and B&B's around Europe and the rest of the world and I have no hesitation in saying that this accommodation is easily on a par with the best of them.

We did stay at another hotel in Lisbon after travelling around Portugal and I wished I had rebooked here.

Stay here if you want an authentic Lisbon experience.

Room Tip: I believe all rooms here would be excellent.

We agree with most of the positive comments about this spectacular and beautiful guest house: interesting yet convenient location, tremendous view over the river, lovely interiors to look at, friendly reception and service, comfortable room and shower etc. Do not be put off by the unpromising exterior by the entrance and steps!

So why only 4 stars, not 5, from us? Firstly there is a bit of a problem with interior noise transference. Late or early arrivals on the floor above, or in the hall below, are infrequent but loudly heard when they do occur. Secondly it would have been fun to use the public rooms for a coffee or
glass of wine instead of having to go out - maybe it was possible but we never saw anybody do it and there was no indication it was part of the offering. Thirdly, and this is trivial, but offered as constructive criticism, the accessories need reviewing through a more practical, dare I say female, pair of eyes. The bedroom for example is great with electronic gadgets, adapters and Wifi but lacks basics like a box of tissues or sanitary bags. The dining room offers an amusing combination of low seat and high cocktail glass for your fruit or cereal, with impractically small coffee cups and plates to follow.

But all in all a thoroughly recommendable place and experience, and we are delighted we stayed there and wish them the very best of luck with their venture.

This is one of the loveliest places I have ever stayed, its beautiful inside with the owner having kept original portugese touches. If you can stretch to the Deluxe suite as a treat - it is awesome. Set on 2 floors, huge room with the biggest shower I have ever seen, 2 balconies and the a fantastic private roof terrace with views across the city, perfect for pre dinner drinks! The staff are probably the best bit though, so smiley and helpful and the owner is always availble for great restaurant recommendations and ideas of what to do during your stay in Lisbon. Great location with the older part of the city right on your doorstep, I agree about the immediate surrounding area but dont let it put you off, I never felt unsafe. It doesnt feel like a hotel but your own home in a beautiful city. Personally cant wait to go back and am already organising my next trip to Palacete Chafraiz D'el Rei!

This was our last hotel at the end of a two-week vacation in Spain and Portugal. In almost all respects it deserves a 5 rating, and I thought I would give it one, but there was a fairly serious service failure at the end of our stay. First the good: this is an absolutely beautiful hotel. It is small and extremely elegant but still manages to be completely comfortable. The owner, Rui, is welcoming, friendly, and very helpful. The rooms (all suites) are gorgeous. We stayed in Amaya, which had a spacious room, a good bathroom with a huge shower, a sitting room, and a balcony with a wonderful view of the water. It also has what I think is the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on! Breakfast was great. Rui gave us two excellent restaurant recommendations and made reservations for us and offered other help with sightseeing etc, but we were at the end of our trip and didn't really need it. Now for the problem: We had an early flight on our last morning. We arranged for a 6:00 AM wake-up call and were assured that we would be called and have coffee waiting. We slept soundly in the incredibly comfortable bed and... didn't get our call until 7:15 AM. Our flight home was at 8:10 and we missed it. We had to spend close to $1000 to get a later flight. Antonio, who was on duty at night, must have fallen asleep. An additional annoyance was that rather than apologize, he continually told us it was no problem because it was a short drive to the airport. He was wrong, of course. The bottom line is that you should stay at this hotel and you will love it -- but bring your own alarm and don't expect great service at night.

When you first arrive you might frown a bit at the drunken homeless people, but as soon as you walk in and are welcomed by Rui, you will not regret booking here. The building is absolutely stunning, sumptious and opulent. Our room (Lucia) was very big and very comfortable. The beds are great, the shower is fantastic, breakfast is delicious and the decor is one of a kind. Good location too, walking distance from the castle, Praça de Comerço and even Bairro Alto.
As always though, all this would be worthless if the staff were horrible. As luck would have it, you will not find better hosts than Rui and his team. Nothing is too much to ask to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Warm, genuine smiles all around, that make you feel welcome.
I don't go to Lisbon that often, but I will never stay anywhere else again.

Room Tip: I loved my room, Lucia

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights following a cruise and we had a list of places we wanted to visit in and around town. Maria at the Palacete was tremendous in writing up daily itineraries for us, and making restaurant reservations. The restaurant right below the Palacete (Trigo Latino) was fantastic. And although the hotel area (Alfama) may look a little run-down, it is a beautiful, fun, and safe place to stay and to walk around. Definitely go to hear "fado" music!

Room Tip: All rooms are great.
