in the middle of town, with a metro station next door providing easy access to the airport and train stations, it has an ATM next door and a starbucks across the road .. perfect ! due to the central location, it can be a bit noisy with the windows open, but soundproofing is good once shut.

the staff are absolutely the nicest people and really make this place work, with a special mention for valter at reception (who just seemed to be on duty when we needed things) who organised a private tour to sintra for us and recommended a restaurant, but really all of them are so very nice and helpful.

we stayed 3 nights. i booked with the hotel directly (twin deluxe w. breakfast at €210 pn) and specifically asked for a QUIET room well ahead of our stay. initially i was delighted with the view from our 6th floor deluxe twin room (#607), but which turned out to be right beneath the restaurant, with the complimentary noise of chairs being pulled around the floor until past midnight and again from 6 am onwards for breakfast. I requested to change rooms the next morning and we were moved to #207, with the mention “we are aware of this problem and have already attempted to resolve it” which means our specific request for a quiet room wasn’t actually taken into account, which saddened me a little, having taken the trouble to specifially ask for it .. having to re-pack and unpack again doesn’t add value to a vacation, so a bit of a “sigh” there .. no gesture or reduction in price for inconvenience was offered either ..

the beds were very comfy and the room very clean. a complimentary bottle of water, fruit and a little bottle of porto were in our room upon arrival - nice touch.

the bathroom has minor flaws; ex. if you just want to wash your hair without bathing, you have to climb into the tub as you cannot reach the hand-held shower from behind the glassed splash wall. as others on TA have said before, there is nowhere to hang towels and the surface around the sink is quite narrow and shelf below is not practical, not ideal for some of us ladies and our products ! i'm told the bidet is a cultural thing in portugal, but for international travellers it could be seen as unnecessary and a space-taker. you can’t go to the bathroom during the night without risking waking the other person, as the light switch is on the outside of the bathroom and the door opens inwards, so no way to do that discreetly, plus opposite the bathroom door are mirrors which reflect the bright light too. the fire escape panel on the back of the room door is fluo (obviously for security reasons) so if ur sleeping on the window side u will see its shine, again helped by the mirrors at the entrance. the phone also had a green light on I couldn’t get rid of, but that might just be me .. LOL ..

an electrical plug on the other side of the twin beds would be welcome. there is one on the phone side of the beds, plus one at the desk, but if you are using a transformer the edge of the desk is right at that height of the plug and you will have to pull the desk away to be able to get to it – as with the bathroom, all minor details, but can be a nuisance and for a 5* not thoroughly thought through.

on day 2 we had a 9-13 hrs tour of sintra, organised by reception, plus we hung the “make up room” sign out, but when we got back at 13.30 hrs the room had not been made up, which was a pity as we wanted to rest and a tidy room would have been nice, so we had to hurry to get out again, as house-keeping was on our floor and we didn't want to miss our slot. night time turn-down service knocked on day 1 and handed me 2 chocolates as our beds had clothes all over them, day two we had the service, day three nothing, nobody, i think we were forgotten !!

breakfast was good, the scrambled eggs delicious, stock-up was at times a little slow, we had dinner in the in-house restaurant once, the meal was delicious and the prices are competitive with other 5 star hotels.

overall a thoroughly lovely experience, but as it calls itself a 5*, it has room for improvement in some areas, but i would definitely consider staying there again.

Room Tip: if you are noise sensitive, avoid #607 or possibly all rooms on 6th floor because of the restaurant on floor 7.

Thank you very much for your detailed report on your recent stay with us. The kind comments on our staff have been passed on to them and most certainly represent a great motivation to continue focusing on customer service! As for the negative points, I agree that extra space to place products in the bathrooms has to be created in the future, we are looking into this matter. I was sorry to hear that you felt some inconvenience due to the room move, my appolgies for that.
However, I understand that your overall balance was very positive, which I thank you for! It would be a pleasure to welcome you back to our hotel one day, until then, take care & kind regards, Julia Campos

The rooms were smallish, but everything appeared very new and functioned perfectfully. It is a very aesthetically pleasing hotel, very chic -- a typical boutique hotel. It is in an excellent central location, and the included breakfast buffet is first-rate, with a great view from the rooftop restaurant . The staff were very helpful as well. Ww would certainly stay there again.

Heartily recommended! Friendly, helpful staff, extraordinarily-central location, marvellous roof-top terrace restaurant with reliably good food, clean, well-equipped room (although more mirrors for putting on makeup and coffee-making facilities please!). My husband and I had a first-floor corner room overlooking the square and had a ringside view of the spectacular St. Anthony's Day parade with the added luxury of not having to be part of the heaving crowds and being sealed-off from the racket by triple-glazing!
I nearly cancelled this trip as I have painful hip bursitis and my mobility is rather restricted. So glad I didn't! Although I couldn't do and see as much as I normally would have, there was so much of interest to see reasonably close by. Baixa, Biarro Alta, the Castle, the river, the wonderful architecture and of course, pastry-shops! The sun shone, the mosaic pavements glistened, fado played and today in grey old London I have at least feel I've had a relaxing and good first experience of lovely Lisbon. Thankyou staff of Hotel Altis Avenida!

It was a real joy to read your review! I could get a true feeling of your experience, the Santo Antonio festivities certainly played a big part in it! The way you are describing Lisbon is very authentic, it is just a beautiful city with beautiful people! Take care & all the best for your recovery, kind regards, Julia Campos

This hotel is perfectly located for sightseeing and going out to restaurants and bars at night. The hotel itself was excellent with all the amenities you would expect at this level (no pool but that is to be expected in a city centre hotel). There's a good rooftop restaurant which is great for Sunday nights when many of the local restaurants are closed.
What made this hotel stand out though was the friendly and super efficient staff on the front desk/concierge and the restaurant/bar.
The esiest way to get from the airport is by taxi at 18 euros but the cheapest way is to get the tube directly from the airport to one door down from the hotels front door with just one change. We managed fine with two cases. It takes 30 minutes, about the same as the taxi in traffic.
The breakfast staff get a little stressed when it gets too busy and can't quite keep up with demand. But don't let this put you off, it's just me being picky.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade if available. If you're celebating an exceptional event, take proof and you might get a bottle of Champagne!

A very good quality hotel perfectly located for a long weekend in Lisbon. The rooms are comfortable and well-equipped. We booked half-board via BA Holidays, and as my wife is a coeliac I checked in advance the availability of gluten-free food, by e-mail direct to the hotel – receiving quick and positive responses. The need for gluten-free food for her was flagged from the moment of our arrival and was consistently provided for with gluten-free bread, cakes, and menu considerations throughout our stay. But most importantly the staff, particularly in the restaurant, were exemplary – caring, friendly and very professional – and the food was superb. We thoroughly recommend this hotel.
