Lisbon's iconic picture postcard castle is a must do--definitely worth the price of admission. The fortress and grounds are so well preserved and maintained, the complex almost looks like a movie set. Amazing 360 degree views. Go an hour or two before sunset to watch the city transform from day to night (bring a sweater--it is cooler and windier up here.) I was there at the height of tourist season and was surprised at how few people were there for the sunset. Wear sturdy shoes and keep your kids close--there are steep stairs, hundred foot drops and no guard railings.

Visited the castelo in July in the morning which made the walk up the hill to it easier though this isnt too bad and can be taken leisurely.
Its worth a visit for the views over the city in particular which are spectacular and you can see all over Lisbon. It took us about two hours to have a wander about the castle without rushing as there is plenty of walkways and things to look at. And if you feel like taking a break there is a cafe to rest and catch your breath .
The only fault i had with the castle was that i wished there was mor info provided in the guides on the history of the castelo

we took note of the reviews - caught a cab up (which was only 7€ for family of four) and got there just after 10 am on a Tuesday morning in August. only had to queue for about 5 mins - noted the big queues on the way out. This is a great location for an easy explore with the kids. They loved the birds of prey and the camera obscura. The staff were great - even letting us have a private view of the camera obscura as we'd have to wait an hour for the English visit. This only allows 20 people in every half an hour on the hour and half hour and they rotate between languages so check at the ticket desk when the next one is in your language. Its well worth seeing. Only point for small kids is that the walls on the parapets were quite low - and there was no barricade so do take care! There is a lot of room for picnicking and the views are sensational. walking back down the hill was easy and we made great use of the barrio elevador (lift).

My husband and I visited back in July of 2013. This is a must see place to get the best views of Lisbon. Enjoy the spectacular views and take a walk around.

It's hard to imagine how violent the times were or what defeat meant. According to The Siege of Lisbon, when the Crusaders took the city, they killed every mam, woman, and child
