Beware of this hotel. Don't listen to any positive reviews of this place. The beds were terrible and the place smelled of urine. The elevator smelled disgusting. There was a blood stain on one of the beds. There was dirt on the other. We booked through an agent "El Corte Ingles". As soon as we saw the room we immediately starting looking for another hotel and found one way better. We could not get our money back from either the hotel or agency. Yes its in a good location but if you walk an extra 3 minutes you will find a better hotel for your money. The location of this hotel is not worth the stay.

This is a wonderful spot for a quick visit to Lisbon. First, it is centrally located, right on the Rossio or main square. Second it is close to the airport, just a 12 Euro cab ride away! The rooms are comfortable. The hotel is compact and it is possible to bump into other guests in the elevator, halls, breakfast room or 'living room,' where the wifi is, so the people congregate there. The staff is friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Upper floors tend to be more quiet, 5th is the top floor which is quiet but it also means longer wai...

The location is great. It is on the busy Rossio Square that is lined with restaurants and shops. You can walk easily to the port or to the St. Jorge Castle. The staff are very helpful in scheduling tours for you and keeping the place clean. WIFI is available in the lobby which is set up real nice. My room had a balcony over looking the square and the castle. The breakfast is very basic.

The first impression of the hotel was the dirty awning above the small front entrance. The first hurdle to overcome is to carry your suitcases up the stairs until you reach the reception area. We started with a room on the 3rd floor which gave us an excellent view over the square and up to the castle but that is where any plus marks stopped. We had read earlier reviews which warned against staying in this hotel - a big mistake on our part when we ignored them thinking they would have taken the reviews onboard and refurbished the rooms. When we walked into the room it smelt of dust and I started to itch. There were large patches of water stains on the ceiling, holes in the curtains, stains in the carpet, mould around the bath. Minor issues included faulty lampshade, missing furniture handle, faulty bathroom door lock, damaged towel rail. The bed was something out of the ark and creaked everytime you moved. The breakfast was very limited and tasteless and the staff, particularly those in the breakfast room looked as if they wanted to be anywhere but the Metropole. We did get a move to a 2nd floor room which was better but still of a poor quality. The view from the hotel was really nice and the hotel was well situated but I would never stay there again and would never recommend it to anyone.

Really handy location for being in the centre of Lisbon and clsoe to all the amenities.

However the room was small and tired looking - and the air conditioning system was emitting hot air during a heatwave in Lisobn ! It was impossible to be cool in the room. This meant that you had a very uncomfortable night and not able to have a siesta in the afternoon. The hotel is old and has a pleasant front reception area but though the staff are friendly enough, there was no notice of a national travel strike which affected us as we could not get any tranport other than a taxi to a nearby town. The breakfast was not very appetising, was basic, the coffee too thick and strong. The waitress staff are dressed in unbecoming overalls that look untidy and unclean. They are also the same staff that clean your rooms. For the rate you pay, this is an expensive hotel which lacks the lustre and comfort of a city hotel.

For more than 20 years, I have been intensively travelling and staying in 3-stars or 5-stars hotels in the world. When I come in Lisbon, I automatically stay at the Metropole. For his location, you can not find better. But it is for the aimable staff, the atmosphere of the art-deco building, the old furnitures and the small details of the traditional "hotellerie" that makes this hotel so particular and quite unique. For those who are tired of the international hotels with the standard and identical rooms whatever the city, then you should consider the Metropole for your next stay in Lsibon
