This place is a hellhole with the smell of raw sewage all over the hotel. the bathrooms are mouldy and dirty. The rooms facing the square are in no way sound proofed, leaving it difficult to get any sleep, when we were moved to a different room we were greeted with the sound of a drill from the construction works next door. The decor is dated and in need of updating, but that is the least of this hotel's worries. The raw sewage scent in many of the rooms and in the bathrooms cannot be healthy and does not result in a pleasant experience. The fact that the location is good cannot be denied but this does not compensate for the fact that this hotel is a dirty smelly hellhole.

hotel was booked contacting them by mail, found a slighltly better rate than the published one but yet not cheap. reservation handled promptly and check in efficient and smooth. hotel has the disadvantage of having their reception at the first floor with some steps up plus one floor up by elevator from the entrance on the Rossio square. room was very large, very well kept and charmingly furnished and decorated in original 1920's style. everything was working in order, good sized bathroom. asked for a back-side room to minimize front square traffic noise and had deep sleeps always and no problems at all. hotel very clean throughout. good buffet style breakfast taken next the reception and/or an adjacent 1960's decorated living room with some tables. internet free of charge for hotel guests. the hotel position in the very middle of lisbon main square (the Rossio) is its strongest yet -probably- also its weakest point. it's just perfect as anything is at walking distance, you have 3 metro stations nearby plus the rossio train station for excursions to sintra and the majority of shops is steps away, but after sunset this side of town sadly changes quickly and the whole square falls prey of junkies, bag ladies, drug dealers and so on... pity as this can be annoying. be very careful with your wallet (also during day time!), especially entering, travelling and/or leaving trams: i wasn't enough and my beautiful wallet is gone... it's sad that the immorality of few idiot criminals can risk to harm the memory of a beautiful stay in a beaiful town in a beautiful hotel... but this is life.

Brilliant location for this hotel with easy (walking) access to the sites in the eastern half of the city (the Castle, the Se, Alfama), and the west (Chiado, Bairro Alto), and is well placed for food and entertainment of all descriptions. It is also next door to the station for trips to Sintra and close to the Metro to enable you to see sites a little further afield. The hotel is a litle tired inside and the bathrooms especially could do with some cracked tiles replaced, but these weren't showstoppers for us. The staff were excellent and really efficient and friendly, and the breakfast was very good quality (limited) - we liked it rather than loved it, but for a short central City break, it was a good place for us to be.

A nice small hotel with a cosy atmosphere and located 100% central in Lisbon Rossio Square. A little used - and no internet in the room. BUT the view from the to the square is great. Would not stay in this hotel unless I gor a room overlooking the square.

I stayed there with a colleague for a couple of nights and when I opened the door of my room, the plaster from the ceiling fell off !! My colleague had to fix the toilets in his room !! you pay for the location which is quite nice, but the hotel itself is in need of renovation !! it can get quite noisy as well.

Hotel Metropole is a nice, classic bed and breakfast hotel on King Pedro IV Square in Lisbon. The entrance to the hotel is tiny (I and others missed it the first time) - you enter an empty corridor with stairs and an elevator, and go to the first floor to find the receptiion - but there are no signs telling you to do this. After this unpromising start the hotel turned out to be quite nice, big if old-fashioned rooms, good towels and cosmetics, a good sprinkling of cable channels, free wifi - but not enough plugs in the room for computers and phones - I had to unplug the TV to charge my laptop. Breakfast OK. Not a fancy or cool hotel, but a good place to sleep if you are working or even having fun in Lisbon. And the location is great.

This hotel needs some serious rennovations. The bathroom was in super bad shape, with the toilet seat being black due to wear and tear. Gross! Even the room furniture needs to be changed. For what they´re charging, they can afford to spruce up the place. Location was awesome, but I saw other hotels nearby.
