“Superb old school 5 Star hotel, luxurious.”
Reviewed 16 March 2014

We were treated well from the moment we got there and were offered a choice between the Junior suite and the Presidential Suite - of course we chose the Presidential - just massive, you do feel like a President when you see the office/lounge area, very expensive furnishings and very high ceilings. It is a great base and the Concierge was very knowledgable and professional. The breakfast was very good too - i would certainly recommend this Hotel.

The first thing to mention about this hotel is its fantastic location; it is literally seconds away from the Restauradores Metro station. In fact its worth pointing out for any new visitors to Lisbon that getting from the airport to the hotel via the Metro is both easy and cheap. Neither of us spoke a word of Portugese, but purchasing two tickets and finding our way along the ‘red’ line and changing onto the ‘blue’ line was a breeze - nothing like the Tube in London! And only costs €1.40 each!

It’s a great central location surrounded by many restaurants and shops and just round the corner from one of the main squares. Many of the main tourist sights are within easy walking distance and getting down to the river is only a ten minute stroll.

From the outside the hotel doesn’t appear fantastic, and with the large sign on one side rather dated. However turn into the driveway and the well dressed door staff who instantly take care of your bags changes this opinion. The foyer is very tasteful and looks into a grand living room area connected to the hotel bar. We arrived well before the 3pm check-in time but the friendly staff were happy to accommodate us and quickly completed the room preparation.

We were in a junior suite (room 601) on the top floor. The room comprised a living area with wardrobes, sofa, two arm chairs and TV, the main bedroom area with a second TV and two bathrooms - one with a bath and overhead shower and sink, the other with a separate shower, sink and toilet. Each of the main rooms had fantastic floor to ceiling doors which opened up to great views of the hilltop castle in the distance.

The room size was good, certainly more spacious than a standard hotel room but it wasn’t the massive suite you often imagine. It was great to have plenty of wardrobe space and both the bed and sofa, were amazingly comfortable (although it might be worth noting the bed was pretty firm). Both TVs were quite small and had a limited range of English channels and I have to admit that the air-conditioning was a little in-effective (however wasn’t needed all that much with the opening balcony doors). My main criticism of the room though is with the cleanliness of the bathrooms - nothing too over the top, however in a five star hotel I would not expect the shower heads to be dirty with limescale, nor should there be black ‘mould’ around the tiling of the bath. It is obvious the hotel is old and has a lot of history, but this is something which should be kept on top of.

As a five star hotel I was surprised to find out there is no restaurant. This shouldn’t prove to be too much of an issue though and there’s plenty of surrounding places within a stones throw. A buffet breakfast is served in one of the reception rooms on the second floor though. Served from 7am right through till 1030am this gave us plenty of time and still enabled a lie-in! The choice of food was fantastic, from cereals, hot English selection, cold meats, pasties, fish, sweet treats etc etc. The waiting staff on every day were friendly, attentive and food was replaced quickly and frequently. This was certainly one of the most positive aspects of our stay.

On the Thursday evening we were invited by the hotel to a piano recital in the living area of the hotel on the ground floor. This was a delightful relaxing experience for an hour with the area served by the bar next door. The bar has a good selection of drinks but felt a little lacking in the cocktail department with only the classics served. Again, the staff here were very friendly and helpful and their fluent English made things easy.

Overall we had a pleasant few nights here. The hotel isn’t a typical modern or spotless luxury - it’s unique and old with plenty of character. As a result certain aspects such as light fixtures might seem dated; the fabulous communal areas however are quite the opposite. All the staff are very friendly and helpful, and little treats left in the room are a lovely touch (chocolates for International Woman’s Day, fresh strawberries and a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine were left over our three days). I’m torn between rating this hotel as a 3 or 4. Unfortunately the room let it down a little but we stayed in early March when rates were relatively low, and at those prices it was saved.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor (sixth) are high enough to have a view over the castle (depending on which si...

To say we enjoyed our stay at the Avenida Palace hotel would be an understatement. From first entering we were treated like VIP's and received a better room than expected. A great base to see Lisbon - many of the sights are within walking distance and tour buses etc can all be arranged through the hotel concierge. Although the hotel doesn't do dinner, the breakfasts served were superb and the staff were so attentive and happy to oblige. The hotel has a charm all of its own, the high ceilings with amazing chandeliers, the lovely seating areas on some of the floors - really beautiful and peaceful. On our last night we requested an early wake up call and the front desk told us he would arrange breakfast in our room! When it arrived we couldn't believe the choices on the tray - well done to the Avenida Palace staff and management. And, on our last night we were given a bottle of bubbly from the hotel as a thanks for staying there - another nice touch. To sum up, great location, lovely room, very attentive staff - we could not have asked for more. We would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Room Tip: Our room was on the top floor with a view of the castle. It would appear that all rooms were at leas...

I stayed at Hotel Avenida Palace for 4 days. This hotel is absolutely amazing. It is well known and has been around for many years since the 1800's. I actually learned that royal families and influential European individuals were hotel guest at Avenida Palace. As well as a few movies were filmed at the hotel. This hotel has a rich history (ask for brochure on it). Aside from that the breakfast is fantastic ( a variety of food and drinks) set in a lovely dining room. The rooms are large considering it being Europe. The lobby and bar area are beautiful. I made reservations for tea in the lobby area (tea, pastries, tea sandwiches, etc) while listening to a pianist play on the grand piano. The stairwell of the hotel has beautiful art work and the sitting rooms across from the dining room are gorgeous. The staff goes out of their way to ensure that guests are comfortable and well taken care of. The internet service is fantastic ( I never had a problem). I booked directly through the hotel website and received a voucher for 20% drinks from the bar, etc. My room was upgraded which was plus (no extra cost). All transportation and monumental sites are not far from the hotel. The hotel is in the middle of everything needed for entertainment, shopping, food, nite life, etc. As a female traveler, traveling alone I felt safe and comfortable. I would definitely recommend Hotel Avenida Palace to other travelers. Thanks again to the staff at the hotel for making my trip to Lisbon memorable.

Room Tip: Book directly to the hotel (you get more perks).

I had a hard time for rating this hotel as four instead of five. My only hesitation is the fact that the rooms are quite dated. This is my personal preference, i know many people love their interior.

The hotel sits right in the center of Lisbon. The location can not be better, walking distances to many major attractions and popular restaurants. Additionally, the hotel is built next to Rossio station (we did not hear any noise when the windows are closed), which is convenient for those who are interested in a day trip to Sintra. We used the airport shuttle bus to get to the hotel, the bus stop is about two-minute walk away.

The breakfast includes several quality options, we particularly enjoyed the fresh fruit ever mourning. The hall for dinning is beautiful as well.

What an atmospheric place! My little daughter thought that we were in a royal palace for sure. The location is right in the heart of the lovely walking and shopping area. We were lucky enough to be upgraded to a suite. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom amenities nice. There are many delicious bakeries offering great coffee nearby but also a Starbucks right next to the hotel if you're not feeling adventurous. The train station is right next door as well. It's perfection. Breakfast is yummy with lots of options and served in the most beautiful ballroom. I would stay at Hotel Avenida Palace again anytime.

Room Tip: Rooms that overlook the square are lovely.
