Lovely square to sit, sip good wine, eat good food and watch the world go by. This had several good restaurants around the square. The Italian restaurant was the best for ice cream (large ice sundaes) mmmmmmmmmmm, good food and friendly service. Didn't find them any more expensive even though they were at the square. Found the prices were about the same as you pay in Glasgow for decent restaurant.

“It's beautiful”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 September 2013

I walked across the square after eating in one of the streets leading from it - not one of the tourist trap places, I hasten to add.

It's as beautiful as ever, wonderful buildings and architecture, statues and fountains.

It was only 10:30pm, but there were barely any people there, so I was a prime target for the lad who approached me and offered me illegal substances, and when I refused, a "good time together somewhere", which I also refused. No aggression from him, just resignation when I'd said no.

“Seems to be the heart of the city.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2013

This square is lined with restaurants and shops, and is very attractive. It's central to pretty much all you'd want to visit in Lisbon and transportation stops here from almost everywhere. The Rossio Station is beautiful lit up at night. Plenty to wander everywhere you go from this central point.

“A Room with a view”

Any one of the elegant cafes or Pastelarias on the lovely square of the Rossio allows you to sit in the shade sheltering from the summer sun or to get out of the biting blustery wind - take your pick, Portugal seems to have the same weather as western Britain this year. The square itself is a pleasant place to look at - with its glistering fountains where water curves in arcs to sparkle whatever the weather. A Metro station is located below the eastern centre of the square- so you can be whisked anywhere else you want to visit; or at the southern end the rickety old yellow trams will clank you there at a more leisurely place. During June, 2013, extra colour was added to the pastel shades of stuccoed, balconied, buildings in the form of huge posters extolling the wonder of fresh sardines. But for the real thing you would be well advised to go to Peniche or Nazare 100 km away to the North: there, you can feast on huge platefuls for a fraction of the price of the out-of-freezer fish serve in the city..

“On our way from here to there”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2013

The best thing we encountered in Rossio Square was a vendor who had all kinds of lovely ceramics, including a picture frame that we bought that was in true azulejo style.

We walked through the square several times, on our way from the downtown to the heights of Bairro Alto. I was hoping we would have the chance to stop for a coffee at Cafe Nicola, but we never did. Nevertheless, it is lovely and certainly a highlight of our walk through Lisbon's center.
