Owner description: Wonderful sights delight walkers at every turn in this culturally rich and charming part of Lisbon, which through its architecture reminds visitors of its Visigothic roots, Arabic influence and fishing port heritage.

Be prepared to walk and climb but it is so worth it. This is the oldest and poorest part of Lisbon. Very authentic, which so much atmosphere. Cobblestones, winding streets that dead end, little restaurants with only four or five tables. Music drifts dow the winding streets. Before or after you visit Castelo St. Jorge spend time taking in the Alfama.

A village inside the city! It is totally different and very peaceful compared to the city centre. You have to visit on foot, so as to gain an insight of local, traditional, living!

Lots of small crowded cobbled streets, quiet during the day but comes alive at night! Loads of restaurants, bars and street food stalls.

For your first view of Lisbon, I would take the 28 tram to Alfama and walk around the area old city. Definitely take the time to visit St. George's Castle and have lunch over looking the city at their restaurant. This was one of the highlights of the trip.

Take your time, walk around, don't look for anything specific and discover all that shows up in front of you! If you like architecture, you may find soem very interesting typical urban buildings. People live in a more intimate community in this part of town and, don't forget, the Tagus is always there around each corner! ;-)
