Owner description: Wonderful sights delight walkers at every turn in this culturally rich and charming part of Lisbon, which through its architecture reminds visitors of its Visigothic roots, Arabic influence and fishing port heritage.

We rented an apartment in Alfama for 5 days while visiting Lisbon and are so glad this is where we stayed. After visiting the Baixa/Chiado and Bairro Alto and Belem, Alfama offers you a real cultural experience. The history, the locals, the fado cafés, the winding narrow streets, the sight seeing, the trams and mirodouro (lookout points) offer you a true sense of how Lisbon started. Loved being here.

This neighborhood qualifies as one of the best urban hikes in the world. Put on sturdy, supportive shoes and be prepared to get delightfully lost as you traverse the winding alleyways this historic quarter. There are some amazing views to be had in all directions.

Beautiful architecture. Great restaurants including vegetarian and vegan options. Plenty of places for stunning views of the city.

we were there during the celebrations for san Antonia, which made this area full of little colorful stalls on the the street with barbecues, drinks and lots of music!!!

There are no signs, so clutch the map you get when you buy a ticket. Go early or late for short lines and great skies. It's on the highest of 7 hills, so I was huffing & puffing by the time I got to the gate. A herd (if that is the right term) roost right above the cafe & make a horrible racket. The tables are under canopies so you don't have to worry about droppings in your coffee
