“Great little spot”
Reviewed 23 May 2011

Just spent 3 days at this quaint little hotel on Janeslas Verdes (Green windows) street in Lisbon. Everything was great, very quiet hotel inside, and the staff are super friendly and helpful. Very clean. There is a great library on the 3rd floor with an honour bar and a large balcony overlooking the city and the river which is a great place to relax after a hard day of sightseeing. Reasonable rates if you book on expedia. A modest breakfast is served downstairs, with fresh squeezed orange juice and a great Nespresso coffee machine. Take your breakfast on a tray and eat at one of the tables in the little garden in the back. Location is good, the # 25 tram will have you in the town center in 10 minutes, and there is little newspaper store down the street that will sell you an all day pass. #25 takes you to the ever popular tram #28, which is a great way to see the city. Enjoy.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the garden are quieter

Found this hotel at the last minute through a discount site - got a great deal - and was SO pleasantly surprised! It was just the perfect landing place after an overnight flight to Lisbon. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful - letting us relax in the lobby - and even get into our room early - after our long flight. The hotel is in a great location - not quite in the center, but in a very nice area and within walking distance of everything. The room was on the smaller side, but it was very clean, well appointed, and had a nice view. The whole place makes you feel like home. The breakfast is great too.

Stayed for 3 nights at Janelas Verdes in April and was delighted with every aspect. I thought I had gambled on the location but actually the hotel is in a great spot and is an easy 20min walk to the heart of Lisbon. In fact, Lisbon is fairly compact so we ended up walking to most places only using the good tram system sparingly.

Our room was a good size and in perfect condition with temperature control and all the comforts you would expect (I particularly liked the complementary decanter of port). And it was silent at night.

The hotel has a comfortable lounge downstairs and a great library with terrace on the top floor. There is an honesty bar system up there so we could enjoy G&T's on the terrace as the sun went down each evening before heading out to dinner.

The reception staff couldn't have been more helpful, recommending in good English anything we asked of them. Including dinner at the Alma restaurant, which is just 5 mins walk from the hotel and served us possibly the finest meal I've ever eaten at less than half the price you would pay in London. Outstanding.

Breakfast was good and could be taken in the pretty courtyard at the back, but at EUR 14 each you may wish to make sure this is included in your room price. All in all a great experience, congratualtions to everyone at As Janelas Verdes.

A magic place with helpful, smiling staff; a breakfast buffet spelling out FEAST not FAST, a little garden hidden away with a murmuring fountain and surrounded by walls covered in greenery. The room large, comfy, immaculate clean, a bathroom with Molton Brown products and wonderful thick towels, again, cleaning of the best. We enjoyed the dreamy library with old, well worn seating and a great view over the sea and harbour. About 20' on foot from Lisbon centre, or you take the tram or taxi. Staff couldn't have been kinder, everybody was smiling - something we appreciate all the more as this is not the usual reception you get here. We had a special birthday to celebrate and our wedding anniversary and we got even spoilt with a bottle of Porto and lovely, old glasses. A honesty bar is offering espresso, wines, drinks, snacks and is being filled every day; honestly, you couldn't ask for more if you tried! Can't wait to go back and re-live that experience! Obrigada :)

We picked this boutique hotel because of its proximity to the cruise terminal Lisbon - it being a 5 minute taxi drive.

Although the area itself - filled with once gentrified old buildings - looks in need of re-generation, the taxis are so cheap that it costs very little to hop in one and head into town or to use one of the charming trams. Walking is also an option either to theriver front or into part of the old town and it really feels like a safe area both by day and night.

The hotel itself is a gem. It is housed in an ancient townhouse once occupied by royal courtiers and has been decorated beautifully, combining antiques with modern items in a gorgeous way. The public rooms and breakfast room are so pleasing on the eye.

Rooms are spotlessly clean and more than adequate with nice proportions. Ours overlooked the courtyard where breakfast is served in summer months.
There is a charming library with a balcony area and comfortable seating plus an honour bar where you can sip a drink and look out across the river.

Breakfast which was taken indoors due to the season, is a sumptuous buffet affair and it would be hard to imagine anyone being dissatisfied with the array of cold choices, plus a small selection of hot dishes. The best news is that you can eat anytime until midday.
Whilst there is no in-house restaurant, there are options in walking distance so dinner is not a problem.

One of the strengths of this place - apart from the more than reasonable room rate - is the efficiency and sheer pleasantness of the staff we encountered. Reception were particularly patient with our endless stream of questions and were utterly charming.

The hotel alone has made me want to re-visit the city. I don't believe you could go wrong in making this your choice.

This was one of the very best hotel experiences we ever had - worldwide.
The staff was more than helpful and could tell you every little detail you wanted about the city.
The interior of the hotel is 'feel home away from home' at its best. The breakfast was nice and abundant, with fresh fruit and juices. The rooms were decorated with love and very cosy, thanks to the four-glass-windows we didn't hear the street and slept very well. The biblioteque with terrace gives you a nice opportunity for a good night drink with a gorgeous view on the port and the river.
If ever we decided to visit Lisbon again, we'd return to As Janelas Verdes!

The only improveemnt they could make in our opinion is an ecological one:
We estimate the little signs 'towel on the floor means change, towel on the hanger means leave it'.
We didn't need new towels every day, but couldn't do anything against it....

As Janelas Verdes is a lovely small hotel in a very interesting area of Lisbon. It has all the charm of a home, which it once was, combined with very friendly, helpful service. The breakfast is the best we have had in a hotel. There is a beautiful patio area for breakfast when the sun shines and a lovely library area on the third floor for a cocktail with a view in the evening. It is located next to the Museo do Arte Antigua, a major Lisbon site, in a charming area with good restaurants and beautiful azulejo covered houses a few minutes from the city center. It is a great place to walk, or they can call you a cab which arrives in 5 minutes or less to go to other parts of the city. On a return to Lisbon we stayed in another hotel, but As Janelas Verdes is where I would stay next time and recommend to anyone.
