I stayed 2 nights and fell in love with this hotel. Comfortable rooms, lovely and professional staff, good prices, incredible breakfasts in the small garden, and great views from our room. I will definitively be back.

Approaching from the direction of Cais do Sodre we were a bit apprehensive given the amount of graffiti on the walls of the street, but when we arrived we were immediately reassured by the lovely appearance of the hotel - and being flanked by the Belgian Embassy to the west and the Museum of Ancient Art to the east made it even more so.

The interior of the hotel was cool and inviting after the heat outside, and the staff were friendly and courteous. The décor was quiet and understated, and it was apparent from the layout that it was occupying an older space that was not originally designed as a hotel: personally, this merely added to its charm. Out room was located on the north side of the building fronting onto the street. Although denied views, far from being a disappointment this was actually a benefit as it kept us out of the heat of the sun; additionally, the room was double-double glazed (separate double glazing on the exterior and interior wall surface) which rendered the street sounds to a dull and distant rumble. The room itself was calm and whilst clearly a modern room, the décor was pleasantly reminiscent of the 1920s. There was plenty of wardrobe and cupboard space. There were plenty of towels in the bathroom and there were additional blankets in the wardrobe. The room also had air-con (much appreciated when the temperature outside was 35C).

All the expected amenities were there (TV etc.), but curiously no fridge or kettle. We realised after making our way to the Library on the third floor (and also the sitting room on the ground floor) that there were facilities for making tea etc. together with a large stock of beverages both in and out of a fridge - with the exception of the tea and coffee the hotel operates an 'honesty' system where you are expected to complete a list of the beverage items you consume whilst there. Besides, given the view from the terrace by the Library why would you want to stay in your room to drink?

Breakfast the following day was served in the walled garden on the ground floor. Surrounded by tall walls covered with plants, the area is a cool and quiet location to eat a buffet-style breakfast. The food itself was simple and very good: we can heartily recommend the fruit-salad (possibly the best we've ever had on holiday).

The staff we dealt with - of all occupations - during our stay were well-presented, professional, courteous and spoke English, and nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them.

As you might guess, we can easily recommend the hotel for a stay in Lisbon. Our only gripe would be the lack of a room fridge - having to go up to the third floor to get cool water from the fridge there at 2am when thirsty wasn't something we'd seen ourselves doing, but it's not a deal-breaker.

Finally, for potential travellers, the only other issue of note is the location. It's about a mile from the Praca do Commercio on the waterfront of Lisbon. As we found, it's not far to walk (a pleasant 20min stroll), but in the heat of the day you might want to consider getting a tram, bus or cab because walking that distance in that heat quickly becomes tiring.

The As Janelas Verdes hotel is an absolute gem of a hotel! We spent our 4th wedding anniversary there and had a charming room overlooking the river. We were also given champagne on our anniversary courtesy of the hotel. The staff are very helpful. When we arrived in Lisbon, our luggage was delayed by TAP Airlines and staff at the hotel were very helpful in checking the whereabouts of our luggage with the airline. I would definitely stay there again and recommend to others.

Room Tip: Rooms on 3rd floor are quiet and has views overlooking the river.

This is a beautiful old townhouse, very well maintained with courteous, professional staff catering to every need. The library/lounge with stunning views and honour bar was a great place to have a pre-dinner drink. Breakfast in the garden the following morning was a lovely start to the day. The walk from the hotel to the city centre through different districts - Lapa, Baixa Chiado and Chiado - took about 40 minutes. There are trams and buses available outside the door of the hotel and a taxi is about €4. I loved my stay at As Janelas Verdes and will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Room 33 looked fabulous!

Took the overnight train from Madrid and arrived very early. Without hesitation we were invited to the fresh and wonderful breakfast in the flower-filled courtyard. All staff were pleasant, professional, and spoke excellent English. The hotel is a 19th century mansion and has been lovingly cared for and is in great shape. Unfortunately, the area it is in is (being kind) a little rundown. Although we always felt safe, it is a 20 minute walk to anything interesting. There is a bus stop 100 feet from the hotel. Bus will take you to the city center and runs about every 20 minutes for about 2 buck and 2 bits.. You are always treated as a welcomed guest. It was a wonderful visit, but (only because of the location) we would not stay here again.

Room Tip: Do not take rooms #1 or #2. They are in the hallway leading to the breakfast courtyard. The only complaint we heard from anyone was that the hallway noise was loud in those 2 rooms.

HeritageLisbon, General Manager at As Janelas Verdes, responded to this reviewResponded 10 July 2014

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for your feedback and your kind words about our staff and our property. We are very happy that you enjoyed your stay with us despite our particular location.
As Janelas Verdes is located in a residential area in a triangle formed by the aristocratic Lapa district, the popular Bairro da Madragoa (adjacent to Bairro Alto) and Santos-o-Velho. They are very old and characteristic quarters near the river Tagus and many of the houses and buildings are now being recuperated. There are many little restaurants and small shops around us which is a characteristic of Lisbon’s historic quarters. This area is not so crowded and touristic as other parts of Lisbon but that is also an advantage for someone who wants to know the city’s authentic lifestyle . There are several National Monuments in this area, like the National Museum of Ancient Art, the Parliament, Basilica da Estrela, etc., and you can also easily walk to some touristic quarters like Bairro Alto and Chiado or to well known places by the river like the Docas.
Thank you once more and we look forward to welcoming you again to Lisbon.
Yours sincerely,
Diogo Laranjo
General Manager
