“Nice hotel, but a bit loud and a bit of a walk from busytown.”
Reviewed 5 September 2009

Gorgeous views from this hotel, though it's a bit further from the hustle and bustle of Bairro Alto than one might like. Overall positive experience. All of your needs will be met here, but I found a street facing room to be a bit too noisy at night.

My partner and I spent a long week-end in Lisbon in May and stayed at the Janelas Verdes. I had booked it based on positive reviews (among others from this website) but the hotel far exceeded my expectations. The hotel is gorgeous: the pictures on its website don't do it justice. You have the feeling of being in a beautiful and tasteful period house (not over the top as so many luxury hotels nowadays are). The staff was also incredibly courteous and helpful. They truly went out of their ways to answer our questions and provide us with recommendations of places to eat (my partner is vegetarian which is not easy in Lisbon), things to see etc...Finally, the hotel-as most boutique hotels I guess-take great care in making sure you feel that you are not in any chain hotel: service is personal, the hotel feels like a luxurious house ...

The only two (small) issues I could think of are the location and, maybe, the noise. The hotel is in the district of Santos, which is the trendy place where most clubs are etc.. but is not truly in the historical center. Rather, it is a 25 minutes walk/10 minutes bus ride to the center. (Cabs are also an option as they are very cheap in Lisbon-we paid EUR 4 or 5 for rides from the center to the hotel.) Finally, we were on the ground floor and we could hear a bit of noise in the morning from the kitchens-so I would recommend trying to get a room in one of the upper floors.

All in all, this was truly a remarkable hotel-one of the nicest I stayed in and certainly the most romantic one. My partner and I had an unforgettable week-end.

The Janelas Verdes is a very charming hotel and you are going to be enchanted by it. On our first night it rained a lot so we went back to the hotel early, but that didnt ruin our night as we explored the hotel and discovered the library (which you should definitely spend time there).

Try getting a room to the back of the hotel if you prefer the windows open to air con as it is quieter. The hotel does not have a restaurant but that should not put you off as there are many restaurants nearby. There is one we found the food to be delicious: we cant remember the name but it is right in front of the French embassy, just next to the pink church. Ask reception for details.

We couldn't recommend more the hotel. Lisbon is the most beautiful city in Europe!

This comfortable, well appointed hotel offers a quiet reprieve from the busy streets of Lisboa. Admittedly, it is about a :20 minute walk to the Baixa of Lisbon. However, a tram line, only a five minute walk from the hotel connects you swiftly with the rest of the city (the 15E takes you to Belem (:15)as well as the Baixa(:5min), where you can walk or easily access other transportation to the Barrio Alto etc., Tram 28, local sight seeing tours).

We had two short stays, at either ends of our 10 day Portuguese holiday, and found the rooms to be pleasantly decorated, well maintained, comfortable and quiet. A view of the harbour from the third floor is delightful. The Juliet balcony from the second floor overlooks the court yard and has a burbelling fountain to disguise the city noise if you prefer your windows to be open. During both visits our rooms had a large bathroom with a much used deep soaker tub.

The library on the third floor is a cozy room with a large balcony where guests can relax and enjoy a view of the harbour. A small, well stocked honour bar has plenty of options to quench your thirst. A happy surprise was the tray of Pasteis de Belem, the highly regarded local custard pastry!

The front staff at the hotel are very helpful. Although sadly, I left behind an item of clothing which was not returned to me despite having contacted the hotel the very next day after departure.

Lovely hotel and would stay again. Good location and near to major museum. Quick access to airport by taxi - only about 20 mins. max. Friendly staff and well decorated reception areas; lovely courtyard for breakfast and also a roof terrace with spendid views over river Tagus. Honesty bar and great comfortable decor in library bar. Excellent breakfast on ground floor with splendid selection - even sparkling wine for Buck's Fizz. Reception produced complimentary bottle of sparkling for anniversary in room without any prompting or request. Only downside was the hard matress on bed if it matters to you. Room safe in wardrobe and no charge. All in all a good experience and will stay there again for pleasure and business next time in Lisbon. Good transport links - bus stop almost outside and easy walking to sites and centre.
