We took advantage of a special offer from the Heritage Group of hotels and were only told which hotel we would be staying in 48 hours before arrival. The As Janelas Verdes is delightful. It is quiet, elegant and charming. It is a little way from the main sites and shopping of Lisbon (about 1 kilometre) but the inexpensive taxis that pass frequently by the front door of the hotel meant that this wasn't a problem. Our party of four adults who all travel a lot would happily go back again and recommend it to others.

My wife and I stayed here for 5 nights on our first visit to Lisbon. Our cab ride from the airport cost 13 euros (cheaper than I'd been told) and took about 30 minutes. Checkin was fast and efficient and we were given plenty of information by the freindly staff. We were immediately made to feel very welcome, they were still serving breakfast when we arrived (from London) and we were told to go ahead and help ourselves (many of the upmarket business hotels wouldn't do that). Our bedroom was very spacious, the bed was big and comfortable, the TV and Internet worked perfectly and the furnishings were just lovely. We checked out the Library, a beautiful sitting room and balcony with a fantastic view of the river and were surprised at the range of drinks available at the "honesty" bar. Then we went out to explore. The hotel is a short distance to the town centre, and is easily walked but we found the bus service really handy as busses are frequent and stop just outside the hotel. We slept very well in our room and had no problem with traffic, or any other noise. A few nights were quite warm and we used the air conditioning which worked well and silently. Breakfast was very good every morning; great coffee, eggs and bacon, fruits, breads, cakes, juices, cheeses, cold meats, cereals etc etc. Everything was fresh, well presented and tasty. The room was cleaned and tidied everyday and everything was completely in order, plus the decanter of complimentary port was kept permanently topped-up! A few nights we decided to eat locally instead of going to the Barrio Alto and discovered some fantastic restaurants just a few minutes away. Afterwards we strolled around the Lapa area and looked at all the elegant buildings including some very impressive embassies. This hotel really is a lucky find, had we not stayed here, we would not have seen Lapa which in many ways is nicer than the more touristy areas. I'll be coming again and I'll be recommending it to anyone that travels to Lisbon.

Gorgeous views from this hotel, though it's a bit further from the hustle and bustle of Bairro Alto than one might like. Overall positive experience. All of your needs will be met here, but I found a street facing room to be a bit too noisy at night.

My partner and I spent a long week-end in Lisbon in May and stayed at the Janelas Verdes. I had booked it based on positive reviews (among others from this website) but the hotel far exceeded my expectations. The hotel is gorgeous: the pictures on its website don't do it justice. You have the feeling of being in a beautiful and tasteful period house (not over the top as so many luxury hotels nowadays are). The staff was also incredibly courteous and helpful. They truly went out of their ways to answer our questions and provide us with recommendations of places to eat (my partner is vegetarian which is not easy in Lisbon), things to see etc...Finally, the hotel-as most boutique hotels I guess-take great care in making sure you feel that you are not in any chain hotel: service is personal, the hotel feels like a luxurious house ...

The only two (small) issues I could think of are the location and, maybe, the noise. The hotel is in the district of Santos, which is the trendy place where most clubs are etc.. but is not truly in the historical center. Rather, it is a 25 minutes walk/10 minutes bus ride to the center. (Cabs are also an option as they are very cheap in Lisbon-we paid EUR 4 or 5 for rides from the center to the hotel.) Finally, we were on the ground floor and we could hear a bit of noise in the morning from the kitchens-so I would recommend trying to get a room in one of the upper floors.

All in all, this was truly a remarkable hotel-one of the nicest I stayed in and certainly the most romantic one. My partner and I had an unforgettable week-end.

The Janelas Verdes is a very charming hotel and you are going to be enchanted by it. On our first night it rained a lot so we went back to the hotel early, but that didnt ruin our night as we explored the hotel and discovered the library (which you should definitely spend time there).

Try getting a room to the back of the hotel if you prefer the windows open to air con as it is quieter. The hotel does not have a restaurant but that should not put you off as there are many restaurants nearby. There is one we found the food to be delicious: we cant remember the name but it is right in front of the French embassy, just next to the pink church. Ask reception for details.

We couldn't recommend more the hotel. Lisbon is the most beautiful city in Europe!
