What a nightmare. booked 6 weeks ago and got an email 2 hours before I arrived to say the room was double booked. Spoke to manager who said 5 rooms were closed due to air conditioning problems. Turned out to be a lie and we (plus another guest) had to call the police. manager refused to give a refund and put us in a horrid chain hotel with a football team! I am currently taking legal action against the booking agency.

When you arrive at the entrance to the York House, you might be a bit dismayed. It is on a nondescript street and it has a very nondescript entrance. Don't be surprised if the entrance is locked. You must use an intercom to contact the desk which will be remotely unlock the gate. You will then climb three flights of charming, ivy covered steps to emerge into a courtyard, the highlight of this hotel. If you arrive late in the evening, you will be required to move your own luggage up those three flights of stairs and this is no mean feat, depending on the size and amount of bags. The rooms are small, modest and require updating. Likewise for the bathrooms. The desk and bell staff are helpful. Some of the wait staff seem to be overworked and often make it appear they are doing you a favour by serving you. Later in this same trip, we stayed at the Lisbon Marriott. We paid 30% less for the Marriott and appreciated the amenities. They are totally different hotels but I was left with the nagging doubt that we really paid a lot for a little at the York House.

We had read about this hotel in The Michelin Guide, where it is to be found - also in the 2011 guide. So expectations were high. We had booked the "best price offer" and stayed there some days. It is a nice historic hotel with a beautiful court yard and surely the hotel has its charm! The room we got, was not as good as we expected. It was simply to small (about 10 m2) and the view was to the backyard - not that romantic. The bathroom had a very poor quality - and surely needed some fixing of the ceiling, a loose tile on the wall, adjusting the plumbing and a new door. The overall impression of the hotel: it needed some new paint, some thoroughly cleaning - and some attention not to have a too shabby "ambience". The bed was very poor and very very hard. The breakfast was OK - but paying 10 Euro pr. pers. pr. day(!) - and you would expect at least fresh coffee and some homemade bread. NIce croissants btw. The chef in the York House Restaurant is very famous - but he did apparently not pop by the kitchen creating a nice breakfast. SUM: It is a nice hotel, with charm, close to the city-center, in a nice part of the city. But there are some problems they need to fix before we will stay there again. If you go there; be sure to get a nice big room (not 304!). Find your breakfast elsewhere, - and don´t expect the traditional features of other 4-stared hotels! But a nice, ok priced, authentic historic hotel, very different from a traditional turist hotel, but with some lacks.

We stayed 5 days at York House at the end of February 2011. First of all Lisbon is a great city and York House made it even better. From the moment we arrived until the morning we left we enjoyed the room (superior), the extremely friendly staff and 1 day lunch in the restaurant. The breakfast buffet is good - not great - and the only issue is that several items are finished when you get there at the end of breakfast. Yes, there are many stairs and when you get through the door at street level you will need to climb a few to get to the patio and the reception, but it is worth it. To visit the city you can walk to Bairro Alto, or take bus 760 or take tram 15. Very convenient!

I was surprised at nelsonw99's review. My wife and I have stayed at the York House on three occasions over the years and never had anything other than friendly, helpful attention from the staff. The rooms are excellent, the food is good and the location is convenient, very close to trams to take you all over the city. Not a cheap hotel but good value for the money you pay.
The one minor drawback is the ascent up the stairs from street level to the Hotel on top of the old cliff. It is not a burden to the young and healthy but at my age of 80 I do wish they could install a lift up the cliff face

The reception staff--all of them--treated us as if we were annoyances to be brushed off as quickly as possible so they could get back to their conversations with each other. This would have been bad enough in a 25€ hotel but was outrageous at York House. In fact, we were treated much better at 25€ hotels in other parts of Portugal. Nice rooms, though, especially on the second floor. Internet computer costs something like 20€ per hour. I will not stay there again.

My husband and I reserved a room at this hotel for our first two nights in Lisbon so that we'd have a place to "land". After searching many hotels on line I landed on this one because (A) it had a room available for 2 nights, and (B) it was off the beaten path which I had hoped meant a bit quieter for sleeping.

We were welcomed by a porter who carried our very heavy bags up a steep set of stairs and into the hotel lobby, which is quaint and situated off of an outdoor courtyard, which you enter at the top of the stairs. Our room was lovely and off of the main lobby - which was the only difficult thing...too much chatter heard from the lobby.

We dined in the restaurant for breakfast, which was generous and varied, but did cost an extra 15 euros each, which adds up. We didn't eat any other meals there.

After a week on the road to other cities around Portugal we were headed back to Lisbon. We both decided that though the cost was more than we wished to pay - 120 euros a night - it was a very comfortable and lovely hotel. I stayed another night and my husband stayed 3 extra nights on his way to a business trip elsewhere.

Well worth it and we were generously welcomed back! The hotel was full when we called and got the last available room. We were lucky, I think.
