“A CITY GEM”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 October 2009

Centrally located in a quiet street, this recently refurbished small hotel is an ideal base from which to explore Lisbon. Originally a war-time rendezvous for spies and intellectuals, the art-deco styling has the charm and elegance of a by-gone era whilst the hotel boasts all the comforts and convenience the discerning traveller expects. Friendly staff, large rooms - the Hotel Britania is certainly not cheap but great value for money. Our three-night stay was a memorable experience.

My spouse and I stayed 4 nights at this hotel and found it to be conveniently located, comfortable, quiet and beautifully decorated. Located only one block off the busy Av. de Liberdade, it was within walking distance to most attractions and areas yet set on a quiet and safe side street. The kettle and instant cappuccino provided were a nice touch and an excellent start to our day, along with pastries and fruit we purchased the night before. The robes and slippers added to the comfort. The rooms were amost sound proof and very dark, due to the double doors and heavy curtains, and we found we overslept everyday! The common areas were stunning and provided a glimpse into the Art Deco period. We spent one romantic night comfortably sipping port in the plush lounge after a long day of sight seeing, admiring the beautifully restored bar and furnishings. I even managed to get a reasonable rate after searching on the internet!

This is one of those hotels that I refer to as a reference standard. It is the standard by which others are judged. The staff was simply amazing and the facilities superb. It is a trip back in time to when people actually took pride in their work! If you stay here, plan on having breakfast. This should be a 5 star, really. Loved it!

We booked on the strength of reviews on trip advisor and also guidebooks and weren't at all disappointed. From the minute we arrived and talked to the receptionist it was clear that the service wa s both special and friendly. The Art Deco lobby is Lovely and I wonder how many hotels would take th trouble to preserve the 1940s barber shop We had superior room on the 6th floor which was comfortableand had a nice decked terrace but as with many hotels the lighting was too low for reading. We particualry enjoyed the decanter of port after dinner each night. Breakfast was excellent and presided over by two very friendly and efficient ladies and the room felt more like being in someones home than a hotel. And all of this within an easy and pleasant walk from the centre of Lisbon The hotel has free internet connection but it is rather slow and shaky and in my view this is the only thing that needs improvement.

we have very happily stayed at many of the hotels in the Lisbon Heritage Boutique hotel chain over the years but never at the Britannia. we will definitely be returning. everything about our stay was wonderful: from the immaculate restoration of the elegant art deco design and furniture to the lovely and spacious room (we had a superior suite) to the incredibly friendly, helpful and knowledgeable front desk staff. the location is central and yet very quiet. there are lovely restaurants nearby, from small family run places to more expensive and elegant establishments -- the front desk can help advise. a perfect hotel.

It is hard to say anything negative about this hotel. We only stopped over for 2 nights on our way to Ericeira, but I would happily have stayed a lot longer. We got a good deal via hotels.com, significantly cheaper than through the hotels own website, and had a room on the 6th floor. The rooms on the 6th floor have outside terraces and as a result are smaller than rooms on other floors, but having the outdoor space was great.

Room was clean and well appointed with cable tv (BBC News 24, CNN ect). Room does not have an iron and board, but a quick call to reception and one is brought to your room. There is a safe deposit box in the wardrobe.

The lounge and bar area are small, but comfortable with free internet and wifi.

The thing that sets this hotel apart is the staff. They are exceptional. We were booked in by Julio who greeted us by name and was a fountain of knowledge and Raquel was extremely helpful when we had problems with our hire car. The doorman/barman Jeffrey (I think that is right) was also a star. The staff here certainly make this hotel what it is.

In terms of location, it was great for us. A short walk into the main Rossio square, San Jorge and Chiado. Lisbon has a great transport infastructure if you don't want to walk. The area around the hotel has plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars. We ate in a few wee neighbourhood restaurants and the food was fantastic. Not a tourist in sight.

Lisbon itself is interesting rather than beautiful. It is a viberant working city with many interesting sights. It has a faded grandure to it and needs more than the 2 days we had to do it justice. I did like the whole cultural mix that the city has though. Very bohemian.
