“Charming and quiet Lisbon hotel”
Reviewed 11 October 2010

We had stayed here in 2006 and thoroughly enjoyed the hotel so returned exactly four years later! The front desk staff is friendly and helpful, and English speaking. The rooms are spacious; we were given a suite on the sixth floor with a private rooftop terrace, separate sitting room, two flat screen TVs. The breakfast (included) was beautifully presented and the staff lovely. All in all a wonderful place to stay in Lisbon! By the way, have dinner at 100 Maneiros...one of the best meals we have had in Europe...

I with my wife stayed in the Britania for 2 nights and it was a highlight of our holiday in Portugal. A very good quality small hotel. The decor is very tasteful art deco in 1940s style , and very clean and well maintained . The standard bedroom was large ,with an entrance lobby with a sofa , separating the bedroom from the well appointed bathroom.
The service was very efficient and friendly . A nice touch was late afternoon buffet in the lounge , at no charge, with hot drinks /pastries, and glasses of port . Breakfast was very good . There is no dining room for dinner but there are lots of restaurants nearby [we found Rubro ,just up the street , very good. The location was perfect for us --in a quiet side street, but close to Avenida Leberdade [the main avenue leading to the centre ]. It is only 15mins walk from Rossio, the main square.
We booked via Otel.com who were excellent and offered by far the best deal for us [around £130 per night for the room.]. Ideal for a special stay for a couple . Probably rather quiet for families.

We chose this based on Tripadvisor ratings and were not disappointed. The location is great - we had no car during our stay in Lisbon - so we can't comment on parking. The art deco style was not contrived, as in many so-called hip hotels these days, but the "real" thing. Our room was very generously sized, with even a space for a 3rd guest. The bed was quite comfortable and the bathroom large (for Europe) and all the plumbing worked.
The staff was exceptionally helpful - very attentive and efficient. They assisted with dinner recommendations, maps and made reservations for us.
In the afternoon there was tea (infusion) served in the "library", and a plate of local pastries. The small custardy ones were worth the stay - and we are not sweet eaters. The breakfast was also fine - plenty of fresh things to choose from. AND a nespresso machine in the bar for a decent coffee. Again, the staff was attentive and friendly.
The other guests we saw were a mix of europeans - including Portugese, which is reassuring. The free wi-fi worked very well.
Although I marked "sauberkeit/cleanliness" at only 4 stars, this was more just to show that nobody's perfect. We had no complaints about cleanliness at all.

This is one of the best hotels I have stayed in, either for business or pleasure. The staff were amazing, the breakfast was great, the location was good and the design of the hotel is simply wonderful. It's not cheap, but for a short break we took a terrace room and enjoyed being in the lap of 1940s luxury. As we were settling the bill, I realised that I had forgotten the two drinks we had at the bar the previous night. Not to worry, the manager said, that way we would be sure to come back again to pay the debt.

My wife and I stayed for 5 nights in order to explore this city for the first time. We could not fault the hotel in any way. The Art Deco interior gives it an exotic flavour, and our bedroom contained the largest bed we have ever slept in! And there was plenty of space too, not only in the bedroom but in the bathroom and entrance lobby as well. Not often one can say that about a city centre hotel in Europe these days. The all-you-can-eat breakfast bar was well up to the mark, with something for everyone. And without exception all the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful.

Regarding the hotel's location, it is in a good part of town, and is only 2 minutes walk away from the Avenida metro station. (Buy a cheap multiday ticket and enjoy unlimited travel on the metro, buses, trams and funiculars). If there is one small downside to the hotel it is that there nearest stops for the airport bus are about 10 minutes walk away - a serious consideration if you have a lot of luggage. There are good restaurants quite near, we liked Solar dos Presuntos and Rivadouro (best to book for both).

We stayed at the Hotel Britania for the second half of our honeymoon and were extremely happy with our experience there. We walked in the front door and were greeted by name, with a "congratulations", and the following 'I hope you don't mind, but since it's your honeymoon, we've upgraded you to our junior suite". We definitely did not mind! Our suite was luxurious - a small living room, large bedroom and bathroom, and two large balconies! We left shortly after arriving for a walk to explore the area and came back to a carafe of delicious port (that was refilled twice during our stay - what can I say, we like port!). On top of that, we were there for the hotel's 65th anniversary and were treated to champagne and snacks by the owners and managers in the lounge and a half bottle of ruby port waiting for us in our room (that we've saved for our own anniversary). The entire staff was equally generous and helpful in providing directions and tips. The location is fabulous - just a block or two from the metro and we were able to walk to many tourist destinations.

I had booked a superiour room, and I must say that it met my expectations: spacious, luminous, vary tasteful design, nice bed, good bathroom, silent, and with a wonderful terrace. The staff was helpful, the breakfast nice. No complaints. I am definitely one more of their satisfied clients.
