We appreciated visiting this informative museum. Near some exhibits, we engaged the staff in interesting conversations. The lunch and our waitress were excellent. The ramps joining various parts of the museum were very helpful.
However, it was the staff near the entrance that is a source of concern.
1. When we bought our tickets, we were not given a guide brochure. (We discovered this, by chance, during our tour. We asked for, and got a brochure as we were leaving.)
2. There was only one person working in
the gift shop: a gentleman whom we found to be quite unpleasant. We like our purchase but would not want to relive our interaction with this person who was officious to the point of being almost rude. Happily, this was not our experience at other venues in Lisbon.

It's in a lovely one-time convent and each of the rooms is its own jewel of an exhibit of tile. Plan to be there for a couple of hours. The HOHO buses stop there (every 30 minutes) and the city buses stop there (every 5 minutes). You can walk from the Praca Comercio but it's a bit of a hike.

For fans and no fans of tile! The building is beautiful and full of history, you will be able to see Lisbon like it was before...

The tile museum incorporates the old Madre de Deus church and has been expanded. It is so Portuguese and a beauty to behold. So much color and variety. Don't miss!

The National Tile Museum is one of the cultural gems of Lisbon. It showcases the centuries old craft and tradition of glazed tiles found on the facades and in lots of buildiings in Lisbon. Azulejo is derived from an arabic word meaning 'polished stone'. Lisbon is seeing something of a revival of the azulejo mural tradition particularly in the metro stations. A wonderful museum in an old convent.
