“Nice rooms, great restaurant about 20 minutes from main area of Lisbon”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 October 2011

We stayed for six nights in September in a standard room. The standard room was large and quite nice with a large bathroom. The rooms have large windows but seem to look over the top of the parking garage. Not sure why they didn't plant grass on top of the garage. The bath/shower has an awkward set up. It's difficult not to splash water on the bathroom floor.
The breakfast was just OK. We had to ask for the scrambled eggs to be replenished several times during our stay. We were able to fill up but it was underwhelming. One day the attendant was half an hour late setting up and we had to rush to catch a train.
Dinner was another story. The food was excellent. We ended up eating there 4 nights. If we had stayed in the main tourist area we would have ventured out more but once back in the hotel it was so easy just to walk downstairs. They have a system where you choose how much you pay for each dish. We usually paid close to the highest amount because we wre very happy with the meals and service. We were also impressed with the Portuguese wines offered. Very tasty.
Overall we enjoyed our stay. It was nice and quiet. Everyone was friendly although service could be improved at the front desk. We received some erroneous information regarding tourist sites and times. I found it easier to get the information myself. I usually used the computer in the lounge since it wasn't available in the room. Surprising since it's a new hotel.
One important note: The hotel is about 20 minutes from the main tourist area of Lisbon by train. That includes walking to the station. That may be important to you. We thought for the price it was a nice place to stay.

Room Tip: The standard room was large so I wouldn't bother upgrading to a suite.

This is an example of a guest house being sold as a design hotel.
Not that its really a problem but I am just saying this because its what stuck in my mind after the 3 night stay. Its apparently an old school redone into a hotel in a nice and calm area, which you'll see all over starting at the reception where there's a black board with lots of info, including arriving guest names so make sure you think about that prior to booking! Its no secret who is checking for the day, which is cute but override any privacy rules. I leave the rest to your imagination.
Staff professional and courteous. The room I liked. The wall to wall carpet was like a blackboard type with lots scribbled on including Einsteins famous formula. The room was quiet and cool, nicely modern with funky colors. The bed ok and the duvet and linen clean and soft enough. Pillows good. Free internet but with cable, always a hassle i think but better than paid for wifi. On check in day I was also given 4 Natas and a generous sweet wine. It was fantastic but 2 Natas would have done. On one of the evenings there was some gathering outside the restaurant downstairs so the loud noise and smoke flowed into my room. I had to sort that by closing the window and switch on the a/c which I always prefer not to use as they are either too cold, noisy or the air flow right on your head making you sick. This a/d flowed right onto my head so i calibrated it on 25 degrees to avoid catching a cold. At least it was quiet, thanks very much. The bathroom was lovely at first sight. Until you want to use it. Ok really only 2 things to mention here. The washbasin was designerly flat and every time I turned on the tap, water splashed on my shirt. I only learnt not to do the same mistake on the last day. The other thing was that you take showers in the bath tub, which inconveniently had no shower curtain, which meant that the whole bathroom was like a swimming pool after a shower. Not too clever and I understand in these designer sensitive days that looks is everything and functionality delegated Scandinavian hotels but this must be costly for the hotel as you'll use all towels to dry up the mess and ask for a whole new set of towels every day. So the 2 concerns about the bathroom had to do with splashing water! Toiletries of good quality. The restaurant downstairs apparently was an experimental ground for students of a culinary school nearby and you could set your own price on meals, between 2 marker prices. Which probably means that they are happy with the minimum price and most guests conforming to a middle ground, conveniently disguising the difference as tips! Its different and ok. The lunch I had was really good, seared salmon with a mash of veggies and potatoes. No complaints. But the breakfast was a bit too spartan for my taste, it really added to the guest house feel. Spartan too was the restaurant itself, a bit too sterile. They had parking space at ground level but the sign from the street always indicated 'Full' but that did not deter me from finding a spot. Thanks, much appreciated. When you walk to the elevator from the parking bay you really wonder if this is the entrance to a 4-star hotel or the back entrance to a restaurant or hospital. No red carpets there, hardly not even a welcome sign. Maybe that's why the parking always was full, not supposed to be used by others than management and staff? Anyway, I can surely recommend Estrela but only for those that want a small intimate place, not expecting stellar service levels, club floors, Spa's and sparkling elevators, huge breakfasts and etc. This place belongs to the boutique category and if that's what you are looking for, you probably wont be disappointed. I could stay there again, without doubt, but it would not be my first choice. I like trying new places too much...

A really nice concept hotel in a renovated old school. The school theme is displayed throughout the hotel with info on blackboards and old educational posters in the rooms. The rooms are tasteful and spacious and the staff is very friendly and helpful. But sometimes one gets the impression that there are small things which should be improved. Some examples: there was no soap for washing hands, the shampoo and shower gel and the toilet paper were not replaced. These things are of course minor, but in order to live up to the standard of Small Luxury Hotels even small faults count.
The hotel is situated near the beautiful Jardim Guerra Junqueiro and the imposing Basilica da Estrela. conntection to downtown Lisbon works fine with the nr 28 tram.
I do recommend this hotel.

I have lived at this lovelly hotel with my family (wife and 3 year-old child) for more than 3 months (before, I had lived at Chiado, a very touristic place in Lisbon). I think it is a great advantage to be here, because you can have a more authentic stay in Portugal. The beatifull place has been restored lately, so it is a perfect blend of modern and traditional Portuguese style. It is near a beautiful public garden called Jardim da Estrela. The rooms are very spacious and clear and are always well cleaned. The staff is very kind, helpfull and efficient. I think it is, by far, the best choice to stay in Lisbon!!
