This is an old Roman Catholic church which was destroyed in 1755 earthquake. It was never fully built thereafter and the ruins of the old church are currently conserved as Carmo Convent. The church in its current state has beautiful Gothic arches rising grandly into the sky which gives a pretty sight. It also houses a small museum which houses items from dissolved monsatries. The museum also has an Egyptian sarcopahgus, two pre-Columbian mummies, preserved heads of a couple of Peruvian Indians and tomb of Ferdinand I.
Carmo convent is located in the Chiado neighbourhood and can be visited when one uses the Santa Justa elevator. There is a path built from the top floor of the elevator to the Church.
This place will appear in my Top 5 list in Lisbon, so highly recommended.
