After reading some of the reviews about the renovation work I emailed the hotel explaining that we were staying at the hotel for 3 days to celebrate our anniversary and I asked if it would be possible to have a room away from the noise. The hotel emailed to say that they would try to accommodate our request and sure enough we got a room facing the avenue and they also left a complimentary bottle of bubbly and some pastries in our room which was a nice surprise.

Room
The room had a very large and comfortable bed and a large flat screen TV. The TV only had English news channels but you could pay to view films etc. There were tea and coffee making facilities and a very good quality hairdryer. No iron or ironing board but I am sure that they would have provided them if needed. The bathroom was adequate with plenty of shampoos, body wash etc provided. They also left 1 free bottle of water in the room each day and also a chocolate on the bed when they turned it down each evening. We were on the second floor facing the avenue and there was a little traffic noise day and night and we could hear faint drilling from other areas of the hotel but nothing to worry us. WIFI is free in the rooms and throughout the hotel and we had no problem with connection. Also a safe in the room.

Bar
We had a drink each evening in the bar which had a nice, cozy feel and was just off the reception area. Drinks were around 8 euros for a spirit with mixer and they had some good cocktails for around 10 euros which are the prices that you would expect to pay in a 5 star hotel. Drinks were served with a selection of nuts and olives. We did not use the restaurant so cannot comment on this

Getting there
We took the Metro from Lisbon airport which was so easy, just follow the signs at arrivals for the Metro and with one change of train you will be right outside the hotel at metro station Avenida in 30/40 mins. Ticket machines are easy to use and for 1.40 for each ticket it is the cheapest way to get into the city. As you come out of the Avenida Metro take the South entrance and you will see the hotel right in front of you

Outside of the hotel
Come out of the hotel and turn right for the best choice of restaurants, bars, cafes etc. A half day trip to Sintra is recommended as is a lovely place to spend a couple of hours. We took the train from Rossio station (10 min walk from hotel) and it took around 40 minutes and around 5 euros each return to get there. Food and drink on a par with English prices so not cheap but also not expensive, travel on trains, buses etc is very cheap

Overall, lovely hotel and lovely city, just take comfortable shoes as very hilly

Room Tip: Email to ask for room away from renovation work

Very up market and grand hotel - well worth staying here when in Lisbon - it is very central and close to everything - the railway station is just across the road and it was so easy to commute to anywhere - especially the shopping centre which is just three stations away and open till midnight - food is so cheap everywhere. The only thing the hotel was having some renovations when we were there and so the view from the rooms were blocked.

Room Tip: We had a suite with a coffee machine which was great.

I stayed 3 nights at this hotel and a perfect stay was marred only by the courtyard construction that occasionally lent a "varnish" smell to the room that had to be aired out via the HVAC system. The location was great (across the street from a metro station and a nice walk to the Rossio and Pombal squares), the service was wonderful, and the room was very comfortable and nicely appointed, including small decorative touches that made is less "industrial" and more comfortable. Bedding and bathroom were great. The hotel restaurant had good food at a reasonable value. If it hadn't been for the construction, it would have gotten a 5 rating from me.

Stayed here the three nights of a 2 week trip in Portugal. On the first day, the bell staff (Nelson) realized it was my niece's 21st birthday. He arranged to have a complimentary birthday dessert for 3 and a bottle of champagne sent up to our rooms as a surprise. What great hospitality! The staff throughout the hotel recognized us each time they saw us and were very helpful in helping us navigate the city--both of foot and via car. The beds were the most comfortable we had on our entire trip and the location is very convenient and central. We will be back!

WE had prepaid for two rooms months ahead of our visit. I was disappointed that we were put on the 3rd floor where from 9AM to 6PM we had to endure construction noise. Higher floors most likely would not have been affected. Since they had our money for months I would have appreciated better accomodations.
