“Excellent choice for Lisbon”
Reviewed 5 July 2013

My family and I stayed here for 3 nights, as a party of 3 in 2 rooms. We were welcomed by a nice selection of pastries, bottles of Porto and sparkling water, plus other water bottles that were replaced everyday. As Platinum members, we got both rooms upgraded from Superior to Luxury -which is the room type I would definitely recommend. It was spacious and functional and even if bathrooms were slightly ran down, they still counted with a smart layout. The beds were the usual fantastic Sofitel beds. The only downside of the room is the air conditioning which was impossible to turn off completely and therefore made the room unbearably cold unless you turned the heating to the maximum.

Service at the hotel, including housekeeping, was in general very attentive. Nightly turndown service is a nice touch. We had 2 disappointments though: first, when we tried to book the hotel restaurant with someone at the Reception and were told that it was fully booked (only to call directly the restaurant for our room 5 minutes later and got a table); secondly, when we asked for a late check out at 5pm and was refused since Platinum members are entitled only to a 4pm check out (one a half empty hotel on Sunday afternoon), while at almost every Sofitel we have stayed, they have chosen to ask us for our preferred departure time - not a big deal, but a wasted opportunity to please loyal guests.

Hotel's restaurant AdLib was excellent in terms of quality, setting and service.

The biggest highlight of this hotel is its location. Not only you are surrounded by Gucci, Prada and LV, but you are within walking distance to everything else, including the famous tramways and the trains to Sintra. There is also a metro stop right in front of the hotel, which can come in handy when going to the seaside or to the famous Barrio Alto. However, taxis are extremely cheap and remain a good option, especially to and from the airport.

Overall, a great value for Lisbon and I would not hesitate to come back.

Room Tip: Any room on a high floor facing the Av. Liberdade

Have just returned from a weeks stay at the Sofitel in Lisbon. This hotel is in a very good location for visiting the sights in the older part of the city. One can walk, or quite easily access metro, trams, buses and taxis from the vicinity of the hotel. The hotels location is also good should you wish to spend lots of money in all the designer clothes stores that line the streets nearby. A downside is that down-and-outs and other more unsavoury characters seem to loiter around the area at night, regularly asking for money. We've been informed by locals that skilled thieves practice their trade on unsuspecting tourists here, the problem escalating over recent times. Always have your wits about you! To be fair to the hotel, however, thieves and pickpockets operate all over Lisbon. We found this out too late, having become a target for the organised gangs.

The staff at the hotel, particularly front of house staff, are wonderful. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they always greet you warmly as you leave or return to the hotel. They carry out their work efficiently and professionally. In fact, the staff are possibly the hotels best asset.

The room we booked was a standard twin room with the usual en suite bathroom. We were allocated a room on the seventh floor overlooking the front main avenue. This was rather nice as we looked out over the trees and saw varying architecture in the distance. It is however a very busy noisy avenue with persistent traffic. As it was summertime and we had our aircon on all the time, thus window kept closed, the traffic noise wasn't a problem. Can imagine, however, that noise would be an issue on the lower street-facing rooms or if staying during cooler periods when no aircon on. Rooms were pretty small for us to move around freely in, but in all fairness we've often been allocated rooms this size in city centre hotels. Our biggest gripe was the fact it had been poorly designed. There was only a tiny amount of wardrobe space, with a rail going from front to back rather than across the wardrobe. This made it absolutely impossible for my husband and I to hang our supply of clothes. Furthermore, there was not one single drawer in the entire room. As a result, we had to resort to keeping much of our belongings in our suitcases. This frustrated us no end and was highly inconvenient. In fact, lack of storage facilities forced the domestic staff to place spare bedding on top of our shoes at bottom of wardrobe! Whilst acknowledging that everyone will have their own preferences when it comes to an ideal bed, ours really were very uncomfortable and I woke up regularly with back pain. The beds were pretty basic slatted base types with an inferior mattress requiring a heavily promoted mattress topper. In my opinion, this is a gimmick. Good quality beds never require toppers. It certainly made no difference to us...we slept poorly every night. Pillows, however, were pretty good, with several different types available. The air conditioning was adequate, well tested in Lisbons high summer temperatures. One was able to control it individually and it was no louder than most others we've used. The bathroom was well equipped but tiny, the one major bugbear for me was the shower system. It had an overhead rainfall shower, something many of us women dislike as it means our hairstyles are frequently ruined whilst being drenched from above! Even a shower cap couldnt spare us this inconvenience. There was a diverter also, but this simply diverted water to a shower attachment which could only be fixed at knee height!

The breakfast was the usual well stocked buffet of hot and cold selections. Should this come with your room price, all well and good. Should it not, then you have the choice of paying approximately 25euros per person or of eating more reasonably at the many cafes within walking distance of the hotel. The restaurant served an excellent dinner menu but it was fairly pricey cuisine. We ate here twice but were disappointed that the menu remained the same throughout our stay. Would have eaten here more often had the menu varied. We ate for the remainder of our stay at several different restaurants all within a short walk of the hotel. The immediate area is pretty expensive when it comes to eating out during the evening but one can find reasonably priced cuisine a little more distance away. As an example, our dinner (without alcohol) usually cost around £80-£100 for the both of us. The food at this price was usually very good. There was a restaurant almost next door to the Sofitel that we were extremely unhappy with, however, and would not advise anyone to visit (no front, only steps up to it). It was an empty, cold and soulless place, "trendy" halogen reading lamps over the table and a hostess who openly turned up her nose at me when I asked for a medium steak. Both she and the waiter were extremely rude to us when we politely declined the steak that was brought to our table oozing blood into the sauce accompanying it. We were made to feel very very uncomfortable when they made a scene at our table saying their chef was Paris trained and would only cook a steak rare! At this, we practiced our assertiveness skills and left, only paying for what we had consumed. A very unpleasant experience indeed. Not to be recommended.

There was a small fitness room at the hotel, although no pool. This wasn't important to us, but it might be for others. A pool I guess would have been nice in the sizzling temperatures of 90 degrees plus!

Would we stay at the Sofitel if we returned to Lisbon? Probably not. Whilst the location was good and the staff excellent, the uncomfortable bed and lack of storage were definately a turn off.

had a delicious three days here culminating with a tasty dinner at their restaurant. Not too big a hotel and that is a considerable advantage for check-in and check-out. the beds are quite comfortable with very high-quality linens. the bathrooms have folding doors and are extremely well-appointed. TV has a reasonable selection of channels but not outstanding unless I missed something. Quadrilingual staff what one would expect from a 5 star; we spoke French and English, and there was always a smile.
Take advantage of their non-refundable rates available in advance if you can. the metro is across the street , not that I ever took it as taxis are cheap and also waiting for you. Chic shops about the avenue. Work out room rather small... business centre small but good enough. They'll do anything for you here in any case, just ask! Did not personally eat their 22 euro breakfast, perhaps it is fantastic.

Room Tip: street side rooms have a view and the street noise was not a problem. Cannot say about the other sid...

We had a Jr. suite which had a nice sitting room and extra bath. They have the best beds anywhere. Staff was very nice an informative, especially the bellman. Very convenient location to the lower part of Lisbon (Barrio Alto, Chiado) and public transportation. The closets were a little funky in the entrance way but functional. Would stay there again.

Stayed in Sofitel Lisbon. Location very convenient, friendly and nice. Room is small, bathroom even smaller. Not your usual Sofitel standard. It has a feel of a boutique hotel rather then your usual Sofitel establishment. Apart from the small room, did enjoy our stay. All the designer labels are on the same road.

Room Tip: Ask for higher floor with view towards the back, nice district and hill scenery, also quiet.
