“Met all our expectations!”
Reviewed 7 November 2008

We just returned from a 2 night stay and loved this hotel.

We had booked a very reasonable non-refundable rate and knew that we had booked the lowest grade room on offer.

In spite of that, our room was beautifuuly decorated and furnished and our window (which was a little small) looked out over a beautiful park. The bathroom was quite luxurious and the Hermes toiletries a nice added touch .

The beds were indeed very comfortable although I would have liked the choice of a lighter duvet - I probably should have asked as I'm sure the staff would have done their best to accomodate me.

All of the staff members we encountered were pleasant and very helpful and they all seemed to speak English which was great for those of us who don't speak any Portuguese.

For us, the location was ideal. A fast walk or metro or tram ride to anywhere we wanted to go.

In our opinion, Sofitel is an excellent brand and the Sofitel Lisbon is an excellent hotel.

The day before our arrival we called to see if a cot could be set up in our room upon arrival, as we were expected to land late and we have a 2 year old who would be ready to go straight to bed. At that time we were informed that there was a problem with our booking and we only had a single. The hotel was fully booked. However, they were able to make a change the following morning and we boarded our flight with no worries. Upon arrival we were informed that there was, in fact, no double available and we had received incorrect information that morning. They scrambled to get us a room at a neighboring hotel for the night and asked us to return the next day for the remainder of our stay. We took our sleeping boy into a cab and went to the hotel provided. The next morning, after toddler proofing and unpacking some of our things we were not inclined to move back. We called Sofitel and explained that we would like to remain where we were. Would there be a penalty to pay. We were told that there would not be a charge as it was their error and they were sorry it had not worked out. We then committed to the hotel we were in for our entire stay and went out sight-seeing. Upon our return there was a message from the Sofitel manager telling us we'd be charged for one night's stay at Sofitel. This after we had confirmed there would be no charge and despite the initial error being theirs. Well we of course protested in person, but they refused to budge. It seems to me that a large chain like Sofitel would be better off writing off one night's stay to ensure the satisfaction of a client they had wronged-- especially when the entire hotel was booked save the one room we decided not to take! I think it was incredibily miserly of them to charge us for the room and I warn others to beware. Perhaps the stay here is good-- that I wouldn't know, but should something go wrong through no fault of your own be prepared to pay.

We got this hotel by pure luck: got off at the wrong metro stop & saw the sofitel opposite - a sign from the gods if ever there was one!
Fabulous hotel - very helpful, professional staff & concierge who will sort out taxis etc for you. Nice lobby, bar was busy (though we didn't drink there). Our room was fabulous - loved the oriental style decor, bathroom was large, gorgeously decorated, great shower.. and oh my god the bed.. most comfortable bed I've ever slept in, you can actually buy one though we figured too expensive to ship home to Ireland..sigh! Great location - 10min walk into center of town with all the action. We ate in the restaurant which I wasn't overly wowed with to be honest; though the hubby's steak was lovely, the menu is a bit old school& overpriced & the hostess on that night was a bit intimidating (v nice waiting staff though) Overall loved it though, Lisbon is a fab city & if we go back I'd definitely stay here - we got a bargain price of 120 euros - bargain for such a great hotel.

  • Liked — the BED!! fab decor, helpful staff, great location
  • Disliked — We didn't get to stay longer :(

We stayed at the Sofitel Lisboa for three nights during an 8 day tour of Portugal in October. The hotel is marvelous, I don't know why anyone would stay anywhere else. The staff is very welcoming (and for the most part fluent in English) and helpful with tips on what to see and do and where to dine. Our gorgeous room on the 8th floor gave us a lovely view of the city. The bed...I did not want to get out of it. It was probably the most comfortable bed I have ever experienced. I think they put a feather bed on top of the mattress.

The bathroom was not large but was very elegant and well-stocked with nice amenities. The shower, a huge overhead nozzle, was like standing it a waterfall. Loved it!

The location of the hotel for us was ideal. It is only a short walk to many of the historic sites and the old trams. Public transportation is very easy and inexpensive to use in Lisbon, and we did use the metro just outside the hotel.

We found the price (139 euro/night) very reasonable, and this included a wonderful buffet breakfast each day in the elegant hotel restaurant.

I would absolutely stay at the Sofitel Lisboa again, and because of our wonderful experience will try the Sofitel next time we are in New York.

Two couples from Norway enjoyed four days in this beautiful, but slightly dilapidated city. The hotel was everything you could wish for; clean, modern, located in the very center of the city, with a very courteous and helpful staff. The rooms were very well laid out and the bathrooms were rather luxurious. I do not believe we have ever made a luckier choice of hotel; the price at hotels.com contributed to this; around USD 125 for double room pr. night.

Very highly recommended !

This was our first trip to Portugal and my husband and I had a fantastic stay at the Sofitel – a great hotel with a great location! The room we requested was ready for us upon arrival – a king bed on an upper level facing the main street. The room was spacious and soundproof and had great bathroom amenities. The location was walking to distance to all major sites and we took day trips to Sintra & Cascais very easily.

The concierge and staff were exceptional. They helped me plan (before arrival) a surprise private night tour for my husband’s birthday and it went off well. We had a private driver take us throughout Lisbon, Estoril, Cascais and dinner in Guincho and back at the hotel room, we were surprised with a bottle of champagne and a cake!

We would definitely return to Lisbon and stay at the Sofitel. Great service and all expectations were met!

Excellent hotel through and through. It started before our arrival when a prompt reply to my request for early check in was met.
We arrived at 930 am and were given our room immediately. Room is small, but beautifull appointed. Hermes toiletries are superb, bed is DIVINE and decor is excellent. My only room complaint is that I wish an iron was in there. Instead we asked housekeeping for an iron..it seems they offer ironing service so they were weirded out by my request for an iron "in my room," but they still obliged and dropped off, what seemed to be, the maid's actual ironing board and iron. Fine by me.

The concierge was wonderful! Excellent recommendations and they called for all of our reservations. Definitely take advantage of that wonderful service.

The location is perfect! You are on the busiest street in Lisbon with all of the designer shops. You are a 10 minute UPHILL walk to Barrio Alto, the center of restaurant and nightlife. I cant think of a better location, I really can't.

Must sees in lisbon-
St Georges castle
Belem and Pasteis de Belem in the original location
Restaurant Pap Acorda
A cocktail at the Ritz..pricey but a nice experience (cigars allowed)
Port Wine Institute

Its a wonderful city and the Sofitel is the perfect place to enjoy your stay.

  • Liked — bed, service, Hermes toiletries
  • Disliked — no iron in the room, but that is really pushing it..
